It is interesting to note that exactly half of the above list were squad members of the famous 1974 World Cup team for East Germany.
It is, of course, FC Magdeburg midfielder JUERGEN SPARWASSER who scored the most significant goal in the national team of East Germany’s history — the only goal of the historic match at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg as East Germany defeated eventual champions West Germany at the 1974 World Cup final tournament in the only full international football match ever played between the two countries.
Hoffmann, Kreische, and Sparwasser went the full 90 minutes for East Germany in the memorable match against West Germany in Hamburg; Ducke, Loewe, Streich and Vogel all sat unused by the DDR on the substitutes bench that noteworthy day.
