Herbst ’73 : Historic Team Sheet – Bayern Munich v Dynamo Dresden

================================================================
In reality, there was no looking back for West Germany international goalkeeper and 1972 Europameisterschaft titlist SEPP MAIER (1) as Bayern Munich club captain FRANZ “der Kaiser” BECKENBAUER (5) and Dynamo Dresden Spielfuehrer FRANK GANZERA (2) lead their respective teams out onto the pitch at the Olympiastadion in Munich for the historic first leg of the European Cup of Champions second round clash on October 24, 1973.

Trainer UDO LATTEK’s side were still missing regular left back, West Germany international and 1972 Europameisterschaft titlist PAUL BREITNER (48 caps, 10 goals in his career), who had been out injured since early October; another player not in the Bavarian Startelf was 23-year-old West Germany international winger JUPP KAPELLMANN, who had broken the existing Bundesliga record with his transfer costing 880,000 Deutsche Mark from 1.FC Koeln in the summer but scored just one goal on his first ten appearances (nine starts) with Bayern Munich to begin the 1973-74 campaign.

Trainer WALTER FRITZSCH and Dynamo Dresden had been doing without injured goal-hunter HANS JUERGEN KREISCHE, the reigning Oberliga Torjaegermeister the past three seasons who would later end his career as the third leading scorer in the history of the East Germany national team, for quite some time; another player not in the Lower Saxon Startelf was FRANK RICHTER, the 21-year-old striker who finished the 1972/73 season as the second-leading goal-scorer for the Oberliga titlist.

FC Augsburg 1 – Bayern Munich 2

================================================================
Brazil international defender RAFINHA of Bayern Munich and his opposite number on the field, FC Augsburg midfielder TOBIAS WERNER (13), collide in midair during the all-Bavarian Derby and first-ever Bundesliga meeting between these two particular intra-state rivals at the sold-out SGL Arena in Germany’s third oldest city.
================================================================

11/6/11
Bundesliga
Spieltag # 12

1 – FC AUGSBURG ——————– Hosogai 59′
2 – BAYERN MUNICH ————– Gomez 16′, Ribery 28′

After scoring twice inside the first half hour, the visitors surrendered the initiative to their hosts in the second half and, ultimately, needed a sensational save from the national team first choice as table-toppers BAYERN MUNICH fended off cellar-dwellers FC AUGSBURG 2-1 to take this particular Bavarian Derby and stretch their lead in the Bundesliga to five points after a dozen rounds.

Just over a quarter of an hour into the match, in-form France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY won a corner kick on the left which he took himself. The ensuing header from Belgium international defender DANIEL VAN BUYTEN produced a sharp save from FC Augsburg’s Bundesliga debutant MOHAMED AMSIF, but the 22-year-old former Germany youth international of Moroccan descent actually parried the ball into the path of lethal Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ, as well. Last season’s goal-scoring champion quickly nodded the rebound into the net for his 13th Bundesliga goal this term and a 1-0 Bayern Munich lead.

Ribery, himself, doubled Bayern Munich’s advantage in the first-ever Bundesliga encounter between the record German champions and first division novices FC Augsburg barely a dozen minutes later. Receiving a ball on the left in the box from Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER, the diminutive Frenchman first started right then cut back left to thoroughly bamboozle the pair of would-be Augsburg defenders. A left-footed, precise low shot past the outstretched Amsif tucking just inside the far post allowed Ribery to record his sixth goal of this Bundesliga season.

France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY (right), who is currently on course for a career year having recorded six goals and seven assists in Bayern Munich’s first twelve Bundesliga games this season, efficiently shields the ball from the would-be pair of FC Augsburg challengers, defender DOMINIK REINHARDT (left) and midfielder DANIEL BAIER, during the all-Bavarian Derby at the SGL Arena in southern Germany.
================================================================

FC Augsburg stopped conceding possession, not to mention territory, so cheaply and began to play with a greater sense of urgency in the second half as the hosts effectively took the mattter straight to Bayern Munich. Who is to say what might have been if FC Augsburg had actually been on target with just a few of the many chances it created. Still, the home side officially did make a game of it with a little over half an hour to play.

A corner kick was not properly cut out and midfielder DANIEL BRINKMANN in deep at the left post was allowed to head the ball all the way back across the face of goal. Over waiting on the right side was FC Augsburg’s Japan international midfielder HAJIME HOSOGAI, who was more than happy to let the ball bounce and then rocket a shot, this time on target. Austria international midfielder DAVID ALABA, filling in for the injured Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, actually managed to clear the ball for Bayern Munich off the post — but not before, television replays easily confirmed, the entire ball had crossed the goal line.

FC Augsburg had a glorious opportunity to level the match in the 83rd minute after Albania international striker EDMOND KAPLLANI was put clear through but Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER, the expensive summer signing from Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen, confronted the 29-year-old second half substitute in the always-difficult one-on-one situation and produced a spectacular one-handed save to secure all three points for Bayern Munich.

Ukraine international ANATOLI TYMOSHCHUK was shown the straight red card deep into injury time, which means the manpower of the Bayern Munich midfield will be stretched even further as a result of the impending Bundesliga suspension to be imposed …

Streaker Bares All In Bavarian Derby

================================================================
As Ukraine international midfielder ANATOLI TYMOSHCHUK (44) of Bayern Munich stands unimpressed with the situation, the uncivilized (and unclothed) pitch invader is chased by FC Augsburg’s Angolan-born, former Germany U-21 international striker NANDO RAFAEL during the all-Bavarian Derby — the first Bundesliga meeting ever between the two clubs — at the SGL Arena in Germany’s third oldest city.

Bayern Munich 3 – SSC Napoli 2

================================================================
Brazil international midfielder LUIZ GUSTAVO (30) of Bayern Munich, the versatile 24-year-old who delivered the last-gasp goal to defeat Vfl Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga earlier this season, keeps one step ahead of SSC Napoli’s Switzerland international midfielder BLERIM DZEMAILI (20) during the critial UEFA Champions League Group A match at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Bavaria.
================================================================

November 2, 2011
UEFA Champions League
Group A, Matchday # 4

3 – BAYERN MUNICH (Ger) ——— Gomez 17′, 23′, 42′
2 – SSC NAPOLI (Ita) ——————– Fernandez 45′, 79′

After storming to a seemingly-insurmountable first half lead, the hosts were forced to battle down the hatches at the back a bit after the break but, nevertheless, German Bundelsiga leaders BAYERN MUNICH managed to hold off visiting Italian Serie A side SSC NAPOLI 3-2 and, significantly, collect all three points in the important UEFA Champions League Group A match.

“Super” MARIO GOMEZ, who currently leads the Bundesliga with 12 goals this term, turned sharply with a ball from Germany Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, skillfully slipped past Argentine defender HUGO CAMPAGNARO and smashed a left-footer past Italy international goalkeeper MORGAN DE SANCTIS for the all-important opening tally in the 17th minute. The 26-year-old Germany international striker gave Bayern Munich a firm grip on the game when youthful Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS chipped an inviting, diagonal ball into the box a scant six minutes later. A leaping Gomez re-directed past the defenseless De Sanctis to leave the visitors trailing by a pair after just 23 minutes of play.

A third strike from Gomez for Bayern Munich three minutes before halftime appeared to be lights out for SSC Napoli. France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY found Kroos in the box smartly and, although De Sanctis got down to make the intial save, last season’s Bundesliga Torjaegermeister was on hand to sweep the ball home for his sixth goal in the UEFA Champions League this season. In all competitions, ‘Super Mario’ has now scored 19 goals for Bayern Munich this term.

================================================================

SSC Napoli gave themselves some hope just before the halftime whistle with a set piece just outside the area on the left, however; after two Bayern Munich defenders had collided in front, Argentina international centerback FEDERICO FERNANDEZ was entirely free to head home the free kick from Argentina international winger EZEQUIEL LAVEZZI.

Bayern suffered a serious blow when the influential Schweinsteiger was carted off in the second half with a broken collarbone. The 27-year-old Germany international did have the damage surgically repaired and is expected to be out of action for six weeks. The impact of the loss of such a world-class ball-winner as well as defensively responsible player was immediately evident for Bayern Munich and appeared to shock trainer JUPP HEYCKNES’ team somewhat.

It looked as if a break had come the Bavarians way when SSC Napoli’s Colombia international wingback JUAN ZUNIGA acquired two quick yellow cards and went off in the 70th minute but this was offset when Germany international defender HOLGER BADSTUBER of Bayern Munich saw his second yellow just seven minutes later.

SSC Napoli would give the home fans a scare shortly thereafter. Fernandez found the back of the net for a second time after beating Belgium international defender DANIEL VAN BUYTEN to a long free kick from Switzerland World Cup midfielder GOKHAN INLER at the back post. A looping header from the 22-year-old Napoli defender left Bayern Munich’s Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER no chance in the 79th minute.

The Bavarians did succeed in slamming the door shut, though, and Gomez nearly notched a fourth goal for the evening after the Italian goalkeeper had come forward in the closing stages. A long-range effort by the Bayern Munich striker from behind his own midfield stripe rolled threatenly towards the empty net before a hustling De Sanctis slid, at the very last moment, to clear the ball away. High marks to the SSC Napoli shot-stopper for the never-say-die attitude on full parade.

================================================================

BAYERN MUNICH : Neuer – Boateng, van Buyten, Badstuber, Lahm – Luiz Gustavo, Schweinsteiger (Tymoshchuk 53′) – Mueller, Kroos, Ribery – Gomez

SSC NAPOLI : De Sanctis – Campagnaro, Fernandez, Aronica (Dossena (42′) – Maggio, Dzemaili (Pandev 84′), Inler, Zuniga – Hamsik, Lavezzi – Cavani

Bayern Munich’s Derby Deal

================================================================

For the benefit of those still learning proper football speak in English, either here in America or elsewhere around the globe, the term “Derby” refers to a good ole’ fashioned rivalry (read, grudge) match match revolving around a certain region of any given country, if not any particular specific city.

In the case of BAYERN MUNICH, the intense, intra-city clash involves TSV 1860 Munich but a Muenchener Derby has always been somewhat rare for quite some time as, typically since the start of the 1970s aside from a ten-year stretch ending in 2004, TSV 1860 Munich compete in the German second division. Bayern Munich, on the other hand, have not been demoted from the Bundesliga since their initial arrival in the top flight to start the 1965-66 campaign.

The last encounter between Bayern Munich and TSV 1860 Munich took place at the quartefinal stage of the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal in February of 2008. A penalty kick in the 120th minute by France international winger FRANCK RIBERY tipped the scale in Bayern’s favor. Since the start of Bundesliga play in the 1960s, Bayern Munich hold a 23-8 advantage over TSV 1860 Munich with seven drawn matches in all competitions.

Bayern Munich midfielder TONI KROOS, still uncapped for Germany and only 18 years of age at the time, is taken down by the tackle of TSV 1860 Munich midfielder FABIAN JOHNSON, who plays his club football these days in the Bundesliga for TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, during the last Muenchener Derby, a 1-0 Bayern victory in at the quarterfinal stage of the D.F.B. Pokal, in late February of 2008 at the Allianz Arena in Bavaria.
================================================================

Traditionally, the annual Derby that attracts the most attention in Bavaria is the intra-state Bavaria duel between Bayern Munich and 1.FC Nuremberg in the Bundesliga. Although often called the Bayrisches Derby, the rather fussy 1.FC Nuremberg supporters refer to the contest at the Frankisch-Bairisches Derby. This translates to Franconian-Old Bavarian Derby and is an overt sign from the 1.FC Nuremberg fans that neither they nor their club regard themselves as non-Bavarian.

1.FC Nuremberg, who are sometimes called der Altmeister (literally: old master) proudly boast nine German division domestic championships but five of those were back in the 1920s and der Club have just one title (1968) since the formation of the Bundesliga earlier that decade.

As is the case with their intra-city rivals, the four-time kings of Europe generally impose their will on their intra-state foe to the north, as well, as of late; including all Bundesliga as well as D.F.B. Pokal matches, Bayern Munich have won 39 matches while losing just 13 with 11 draws in the Bayrisches Derby with 1.FC Nuremberg.

================================================================

With the second round D.F.B. Pokal tie opposite FC Ingolstadt followed up by the Bundesliga Bayrisches Derby match with 1.Nuremberg a few days later, Bayern Munich had the unusual occurance of two intra-state Bavarian battles inside of the very same week; newly promoted FC Augsburg, who have yet to face trainer Jupp Heynckes’s side this season, are the other football club from Bavaria in the Bundesliga this season.

10/29/11
Bundesliga
Spieltag # 11

4 – BAYERN MUNICH ———— Gomez 2′, 68′, Schweinsteiger 19′, Ribery 39′
0 – 1.FC NUREMBERG

Yet another Blitztor followed up by two more first half strikes essentially settled the affair rather early as Bundesliga leaders BAYERN MUNICH cruised to a thorough 4-0 triumph over traditional intra-state rival 1.FC NUREMBERG in the latest installment of the Bayrisches Derby and remained at the top of the German first division.

Bayern Munich needed just 88 seconds to open the scoring after Germany international defender HOLGER BADSTUBER lifted a precise long ball to BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER out on the right wing. The Germany World Cup midfielder skillfully settled with a delicate touch and immediately issued a precise cross for Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ to run onto and head past 1.FC Nuremberg goalkeeper ALEXANDER STEPHAN. The goal, an eleventh of the season in the Bundesliga for the 26-year-old striker, was, in fact, the first Kopfballtor for Gomez this term.

Bayern Munich, who have not lost at home to 1.FC Nuremberg since the 1991-92 season and have now won eleven matches with two draws since, doubled its advantage in the 19th minute after some of the most eye-pleasing build-up of this entire campaign thus far. Germany World Cup left back PHILIPP LAHM worked the one-two with France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY and galloped into the penalty area before pulling the ball back for Gomez at the top of the box. The regining Bundesliga Torjaegermeister unselfishly laid the ball of for the approaching Schweinsteiger, who uncorked a firece blast just inside the post to leave Stephan absolutely no prayer.

================================================================

================================================================
Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS of Bayern Munich tries to fight through the tackle of FC Nuremberg’s Israel international midfielder ALMOG COHEN (ground) as former Germany U-21 international midfielder JURI JUDT (16) of der Club closes in to provide assistance during the Bundesliga Bayrisches Derby at the Allianz Arena in Bavaria.
================================================================

Six minutes before the halftime break, Ribery turned on the left wing with a ball from the Bayern Munich club captain Lahm and cut back into the center before rifling a low, right-footer to beat the shell-shocked Stephan. The in-form Frenchman has been a dominant force for the Bayern attack with five goals and seven assists to his credit already in the first eleven matches of this 2011-12 Bundesliga season. This all the more important considering the contined absence of superstar Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN.

Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER had his eight-game shutout streak in the Bundesliga snapped by Hannover 96 on his last outing for Bayern Munich but came off his line extremely well to smother a ball at the feet of 1.FC Nuremberg’s 22-year-old Czech Republic international striker TOMAS PEKHART roughly ten minutes into the second half. Later the 25-year-old backstop preserved his clean sheet with a sharp reflex save off a close range header from Pekhart. Neuer has now ‘spielte zu Null’ (played to zero, i.e., picked up the shutout) in nine of his first eleven Bundesliga matches for Bayern since signing his highly-controversial move from Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen this summer.

In the meantime, the 22-year-old Badstuber had already been unlucky to rattle the proverbial woodwork but then released Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS down the left wing with another standout pass. The 21-year-old midfielder made a threatening run to the goal line before squaring to give Gomez a simple tap in. With a second score of the match, the current scoring leader in the German top flight this season, as well, took his career tally for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga to an even 50 goals in only 71 matches.

To review, Gomez was bought by Bayern Munich from Vfb Stuttgart in the summer of 2009 for the then-record German transfer fee of 30.0 million Euros.
