This spread showing the UCLA BRUINS numerical roster along with the photograph of co-captains DALE GILMORE (# 25) and JOHN FRAWLEY (# 12) originates from the game program for the Pacific Coast Conference clash with visiting Washington State College at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in late November of 1939 … Gilmore, a three-year letterwinner for the Bruins who originally arrived on campus via Miramonte Junior College, started nine games at right halfback over the course of his final two seasons at UCLA and tallied a rushing touchdown versus the University of Iowa in 1938 as well as a pass receiving touchdown against the University of Washington in 1939 … Frawley, the three-year letterwinner from Miles City, Montana, who initially began appearing with the UCLA first string as a sophomore, later became the Bruins’ regular placekicker in the third game of his junior campaign and successfully booted a combined 18 extra points during the 1938 and 1939 NCAA seasons.

ucla-39-gilmore-miramonteThis action-packed photo from the official yearbook of the University of California at Los Angeles covering the 36/37 academic term shows would-be UCLA co-captain DALE “Buck” GILMORE (in the center of the trio of players at the far right) carrying the ball for visiting Miramonte Junior College in the game against the Bruins’ freshman football squad which was contested in the fall of 1936.

A fine blog which has been reviewing even the earliest history of UCLA football exists and has done well to section off and enlarge the photo of Gilmore lugging the pigskin for Miramonte :

  1. Thank you for the kind words about my blog that deals with early UCLA football!

    Hi Tom,
Dale Gilmore was my grandpa, I’ve really enjoyed seeing the pictures you’ve posted of him and reading a little bit about his football career. I’ll show them all to my grandma when I see her next. She has the photo of him on the roster hanging in her house along with his jersey, but I’m not sure if she has the ones of him on the field. I know she’ll enjoy seeing all of this! Thank you!

You are most welcome, Hannah. That’s really cool that you will show some of this stuff to your grandmother! Your grandfather was a very fine football player for a very good UCLA team, you both have a lot to be proud of.

Sorry, Rolf! I saw the comment above mine and got the name wrong!

No problem at all, Hannah … again, I think that’s really cool that you will be showing this stuff to your grandmother — the best “action” photo of Dale Gilmore, in my opinion, is the ‘cover’ photo of the “1939, UCLA vs Santa Clara” story.🙂
