With two-time defending champion BORUSSIA DORTMUND already eleven points off the pace at the top of the Bundesliga table this term, there is little question that die Schwarzgelben needed all three points from the recent clash with current German top flight leaders BAYERN MUNICH at the Allianz Arena just a little bit more than the host Bavarians actually did.

However, there is also equally little doubt that, were it not for the late heroics of goalkeeper ROMAN WEIDENFELLER, then Bayern Munich would have been able to celebrate a great victory over their chief domestic rival of contemporary times and, indeed, the visitors from North Rhine-Westphalia would not have been able to claim any share of the spoils at all!

For, in fact, it was a trio of difficult saves pulled off by the veteran Weidenfeller that prevented Bayern Munich from picking up full three points at the Allianz Arena and extended the five-match unbeaten streak that die Schwarzgelben currently enjoy against the Bavarians in Bundesliga competiton.

The not-pictured Germany international winger THOMAS MUELLER of Bayern Munich had a good idea and made a quality effort to catch the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper just a bit too far off his line, but the wiley ROMAN WEIDENFELLER, a 32-year-old veteran who was making his 274th career Bundesliga appearance on this particular occasion, would have none of that and was able to tip the ball over the crossbar just in the nick of time during the pivotal Bundesliga clash as the Allianz Arena.

The well-experienced Weidenfeller certainly saved his best for last, much to the chagrin of the Bavarian faithful at the Allianz Arena. Spain international midfielder JAVIER MARTINEZ, the domestic record 40.0 million Euro signing from La Liga club Athletic Bilbao who only recently netted his first-ever goal for Bayern Munich with a spectacular, overhead bicycle-kick against Hannover 96, put a powerful header on target that certainly had enough quality to be a genuine match-winner. But, unfortunately for the pricey Spaniard, the Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper was skillfully able to stick out his left hand and effectively steer this most dangerous shot around the post to safety.

Sometimes, it is very hard to believe that Weidenfeller has never even given so much as single game by the senior national team of Germany at some point throughout the course of his accomplished career which includes two Bundesliga titles already on the resume …

Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ, the prolific Torjaeger who had come on as a substitute for Bayern Munich only a few minutes earlier, covers his face in disbelief after Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper ROMAN WEIDENFELLER kept out the late header of the not-pictured Spain international midfielder Javier Martinez during the waning moments of the big Bundesliga battle between the reigning two-time defending champions and the all-time record-winning titlists at the Allianz Arena in Bavaria.
