Spieltag # 15

1 – BAYERN MUNICH ———————— Kroos 67′
1 – BORUSSIA DORTMUND ————— Goetze 74′

A pair of goals from two of Germany’s most promising young national team midfielders evenly divided in the last half hour between the two arch-rivals as well as a trio of sensational, very late saves from the visiting goalkeeper meant that hosting league leaders BAYERN MUNICH and two-time defending Bundesliga champion BORUSSIA DORTMUND had to share the points in this most recent installment of DER KLASSIKER in the elite division of Deutschland.

Visiting trainer JUERGEN KLOPP’s club, above all else, could not afford a loss at the Allianz Arena in Bavaria already trailing Bayern Munich by eleven points in the Bundesliga standings to begin with. And so it should have come as no surprise, then, that a defensively-oriented game of cat and mouse developed throughout most of the first half. In particluar, Borussia Dortmund were not prepared to give any time and space on the ball at all to Bayern Munich’s Germany international BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, the influential, defensive midfielder who has already gotten forward to score six goals in all competitions for the Bavarian juggernaut this term.

Bayern Munich, meanwhile, would suffer a major loss not so long before the halftime whistle when Germany international defender HOLGER BADSTUBER, who has only recently returned to his preferred position of left centerback on the Bavarian backline, suffered a devastating knee injury and would need to be stretched off the pitch; thus, national team constituent JEROME BOATENG needed to come off the bench and take the fallen Badstuber’s place in the 37th minute of der Klassiker at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich’s inspirational midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, the 28-year-old veteran who has been capped 97 times and scored 23 goals for Germany in his career, sees his pass intercepted by national team colleague and Borussia Dortmund defender MATS HUMMELS (15), the 23-year-old centerback who has been selected 23 times and scored once for Deutschland thus far in his time, during the hard-fought Bundesliga-Klassiker at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Bavaria.

Borussia Dortmund’s Germany international winger MARCO REUS, the expensive summer signing who cost 17.1 million Euros from Borussia Moenchengladbach and has bagged nine goals in all competitions for die Schwarzgelben this season including three strikes in the UEFA Champions League, had a great opportunity for the visitors just before the break but volleyed his effort straight at Bayern Munich and Germany first choice MANUEL NEUER.

Not so long after the break, the Bavarians’ backstop was needed again but this time the test from Borussia Dortmund’s Germany international defender MATS HUMMELS was much tougher after the visitors caught the Bayern Munich defense flat-footed with a quickly-taken free kick.

The chances at both ends of the pitch increased considerably in the second half and, finally, Bayern Munich broke the deadlock when Germany international TONI KROOS produced an individual moment of brilliance for the league leaders. The 22-year-old midfielder first, and rather impressively, snaked his way past both Hummels and Serbia international defender NEVIN SUBOTIC before lashing a pinpoint left-footer to the low far post. A sixth goal of this Bundesliga season already for Kroos, who netted four goals in 31 top flight matches for Bayern Munich last term.

Croatia international striker MARIO MANDZUKIC of Bayern Munich (right), the off-season signing costing 13.0 million Euros from Vfl Wolfsburg who leads his new Bavarian club with nine goals in the Bundesliga this season but has not scored since the 1.FC Nuremberg derby match a couple of weeks ago, was given the start up front by Bavarian trainer JUPP HEYNCKES; it was, of course, Mandzukic who scored the first goal of the match in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 triumph over defending Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup contest to formally open this 2012/13 campaign.

The hosts would not have long to celebrate, however, after a corner kick was not properly cleared only seven minutes later. Borussia Dortmund’s Germany international midfielder MARIO GOETZE was amazignly left unmarked at the top of the box and latched onto a loose ball. A deadly-accurate, left-footed shot from the 20-year-old prodigy of die Schwarzgelben gave Neuer no hope and also provided the talented youngster Goetze a fifth goal of this Bundesliga season.

Almost immediately after trainer JUPP HEYNCKES took off Croatia international striker MARIO MANDZUKIC in favor of Germany international MARIO GOMEZ, the 27-year-old Torjaeger who scored 54 Bundesliga goals for Bayern Munich the previous two seasons but is now just returning from a lengthy injury spell, the hosts mounted a serious challenge to claim the winner. Kroos, Germany international winger THOMAS MUELLER and Spain international midfielder JAVIER MARTINEZ all had quality shots on target for the Bavarians but were denied by the outstanding goalkeeping of Borussia Dortmund’s ROMAN WEIDENFELLER. Without question, Weidenfeller literally saved die Schwarzgelben a share of the bacon for this Bundesliga match.

Still, Bayern Munich could be happy about ending a four-game losing against Borussia Dortmund in domestic league competition — much more importantly, the Bavarians maintained a sizeable 11-point lead over the defending champions in the top flight standings as the annual Winterpause of this historic 50th Bundesliga season rapidly approaches.
