Argentina international midfielder ALBERTO “Tino” COSTA of Spanish La Liga side CF Valencia, the 27-year-old with exactly two caps for his country who was bought by Los Che from French Ligue 1 club HSC Montpellier for a transfer fee of 6.5 million Euros in the summer of 2010, and in-form Germany international winger THOMAS MUELLER (25) of German Bundelsiga outfit Bayern Munich tussle for control of the ball during the UEFA Champions League Group F match at the Estadio di Mestalla on the Mediterranean coast.

UEFA Champions League
Group F

1 – CF VALENCIA (Spa) ——————— Feghouli 77′
1 – BAYERN MUNICH (Ger) ————– Mueller 82′

In spite of having a man sent off roughly half an hour in, the spunky home side actually scored with less than a quarter of an hour to play and were serioulsy thinking about all three points before an equalizer five minutes later allowed both teams, in the end, to ensure passage to the knockout round of Europe’s premier competition as visiting German Bundesliga club BAYERN MUNICH drew 1-1 with Spanish La Liga host CF Valencia on the fifth day of match play in Group F of the UEFA Champions League.

The visiting German Bundelsiga leaders, who had already been thorough charge of this pivotal Euroepan affair for the first twenty-five minutes or so, got a big break when CF Valencia defender ANTONIO BARRAGAN was shown his second yellow card in a little more than half an hour of play.

CF Valencia captain ROBERTO SOLDADO (9), the 27-year-old Spain international striker (7 caps, 4 goals) who cut his La Liga teeth with perennial Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid before moving to CF Getafe in the summer of 2008, unsuccessfully pleads the home side’s case to the English referee HOWARD WEBB, who earlier in the contest had booked Los Che defender ANTONIO BARRAGAN (14) for a rough tackle on Bayern Munich’s France World Cup winger Franck Ribery during the UEFA Champions League Group F match at the Estadio di Mestalla.

The convicted football criminal who was bought by Los Che from second division side Real Valladolid for the transfer fee of 1.5 million Euros in the summer of 2011, CF Valencia’s former Spain youth interntional defender ANTONIO BARRAGAN (14), must ingloriously exit the pitch during the 33rd minute of the UEFA Champions League Group F match at the Estadio di Mestalla on the Mediterranean coast in eastern Spain.

As was in the case of Bayern Munich’s last match over the preceeding weekend against Bavarian arch-rival 1.FC Nuremberg, the record German champions did not necessarily take full opportunity of the man-power advantage, then. CF Valencia adopted a 4-4-1-1 formation and settled in well with their strategy and tactics. Peru international CLAUDIO PIZARRO, the 34-year veteran striker who had registered the hat trick against French Ligue 1 side OSC Lille in Bayern Munich’s last UEFA Champions League match, did draw a diving save from Los Che goalkeeper VICENTE GUAITA late in the first half but, otherwise, the home side held firm until the halftime whistle.

Visiting trainer JUPP HEYNCKES looked to pump some life into the stale Bavarian attack six minutes after the hour by bringing on the pair of Switzerland international midfielder XHERDAN SHAQIRI and Croatia striker MARIO MANDZUKIC, who leads Bayern Munich with nine goals in the Bundesliga this term, at the same time; the move almost worked to perfection shortly thereafter, as well, but Mandzukic put his header off the post after a lovely feed from the little Swiss tank.

But the complexion of this European occasion was about to be radically altered yet again.

Under pressure from Spain international midfielder JAVIER MARTINEZ of Bayern Munich, the versatile, 24-year-old who smashed the existing Bundesliga record after transferring from Spanish La Liga side Athletic Bilbao to the traditional Bavarian powerhouse for the staggering transfer fee of 40.0 million Euros earlier this season, CF Valencia goalkeeper VICENTE GUAITA safely secures a high ball in the box during the UEFA Champions League Group F match at the Estadio di Mestalla.

Ten-man CF Valencia took the lead in the 77th minute when a shot by Algeria’s new international striker SOFIANE FEGOULI, the native Frenchman who fired a goal for his adopted country in a FIFA World Cup qualification victory over Rwanda this past summer, profited from a most-forunate deflection from the arm of Bayern Munich’s Brazilian defender DANTE that trickled into the net.

Heynckes next brought “Super” MARIO GOMEZ off the bench for the Germany international striker’s first appearance in any competition for the traditional Bavarian giants this 2012/13 season. This substitution, apparently, worked out, then, as it was a flick from the Bundesliga-Torjaeger Gomez off a cross from Bayern Munich constiuent and Germany team captain PHILIPP LAHM that found its way to in-form Germany international THOMAS MUELLER. The productive, 23-year-old winger, who has already managed seven goals in Bayern Munich’s thirteen Bundesliga matches this season, had no trouble from ten yards out and struck for a second time in Europe this term in the process.

Bayern Munich might have been disappointed to have outshot their Spanish hosts 17-9 on the evening, according to the official website of the UEFA Champions League, itself. The Los Che netminder Guaita did not perform badly, however, it should be noted. Futhermore, the Belarussian club BATE Borisov’s loss in France to OSC Lille ensured that both CF Valencia and Bayern Munich have now, officially, booked their passage into the next round of the UEFA Champions League competition.

Austria left back DAVID ALABA (27) of visiting record German champion Bayern Munich and CF Valencia’s Algeria new international winger SOFIANE FEGHOULI (8), the 22-year-old native of France who transferred from what was then Ligue 1 side Grenoble Foot 38 in May of 2010, jockey for position during the UEFA Champions League Group F match at the Estadio di Mestalla in the country’s third-largest city, located on the Mediterranean coast in eastern Spain.
