Fortuna Duesseldorf 0 – Bayern Munich 5

Croatia international striker MARIO MANDZUKIC (left) of table-toppers Bayern Munich, the in-form off-season signing from Vfl Wolfsburg who now counts 10 goals in all competitions including the German Super Cup victory over Borussia Dortmund to kick-off this 2012/13 campaign, netted his seventh tally in the top flight this season during the very one-sided Bundesliga contest with host Fortuna Duesseldorf at the Esprit Arena in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Bundesliga
Spieltag # 8

0 – FORTUNA DUESSELDORF
5 – BAYERN MUNICH ———————— Mandzukic 27′, Luiz Gustavo 36′, Mueller 55′, 86′, Rafinha 87′

With no less than the opportunity for a history-making eighth consecutive victory to start a new season at stake, the visitors were in complete control from beginning to end as record German champion BAYERN MUNICH blew out host FORTUNA DUESSELDORF 5-0 and established a brand new benchmark to help celebrate this noteworthy 50th Bundesliga campaign.

It had been a week shy of sixteen years (October 26, 1996) since the Bavarians had last traveled to North Rhine-Westphalia in order to play a proper football match with once-mighty Fortuna Duesseldorf, only promoted from the second divison this summer. Bayern Munich, in fact, had never before appeared in the modern Esprit Arena, which was built on the very same site along the great Rhine River where the legendary Rheinstadion once stood. But the first visit would be memorable, to be certain.

Highly-experienced Bayern Munich trainer JUPP HEYNCKES, as luck would have it, also collected his 300th career Bundesliga victory in the triumph over feeble Fortuna Duesseldorf.

Germany national team first choice MANUEL NEUER did not need to do much in the match with Fortuna Duesseldorf but still posted his fifth consecutive clean sheet in the Bundesliga and, overall, now counts six shutouts in Bayern Munich’s first eight top flight contests to begin this new season.

France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY continued his rich vein of form from the past few matches and set up three of Bayern Munich’s five goals in the rout of Fortuna Duesseldorf.

Brazil international LUIZ GUSTAVO was the beneficiary of a lucky bounce but was credited with his third goal of this Bundesliga season, all the same. The very reliable 25-year-old defensive midfielder, who first turned out in the German top flight with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim during the 2008/09 campaign, equaled his career high for one season (after just seven appearances) in the process, as well. Luiz Gustavo scored only one goal, albeit a dramatic 90th minute match-winner against Vfl Wolfsburg, in 28 Bundesliga matches for Bayern Munich last term.

Austria international DAVID ALABA, the versatile 20-year-old who had a loan spell with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for the second half of the 2010/11 campaign, made his first appearance in any competition for Bayern Munich this season and collected an assist after coming on as a second half substitute. Seldom-used Brazil international RAFINHA made just his second Bundesliga appearance for the Bavarians this term but did register his first goal of the new campaign with a very cool finish after a fine pass from Ribery. The 27-year-old defender did not score a goal in 24 Bundesliga games for Bayern Munich last season after arriving from Italian Serie A side FC Genoa but did find the back of the net against Spanish La Liga outfit FC Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League last term.

Germany national team winger THOMAS MUELLER continued his fabulous start to this 2012/13 season and, after netting a brace for Bayern Munich in the history-making triumph over host Fortuna Duesseldorf, now boasts six goals in his first seven Bundesliga matches.
