Bundesliga
Spieltag # 1

0 – SPVGG GREUTHER FUERTH
3 – BAYERN MUNICH ——————— Mueller 43′, Mandzukic 59′, Robben 79′

A scrambled goal from a corner kick just before the halftime whistle forced the hosts to alter its ultra-defensive tactics and another strike on the rebound just before the hour effectively left the top flight debutant with no real hope whatsoever as visiting BAYERN MUNICH blanked SPVGG GREUTHER FUERTH 3-0 in a historic Bavarian Derbyspiel helping to open the Bundesliga’s 50th Anniversary Season.

Chances in the first half came at an absolute premium, then, before Bayern Munich’s new Brazilian centerback DANTE rose high to meet the corner kick of youthful Switzerland international XHERDAN SHAQIRI, the record German champions’ summer signing for three-time defending Swiss Super League side FC Basel. Kazakhstan international fullback HEINRICH SCHMIDTGAL did well to clear the header off the SpVgg Greuther Fuerth line but the ball was not properly cleared in response. Another riccochet soon fell kindly for Germany international THOMAS MUELLER and the still-only 22-year-old winger who scored the final goal of Bayern Munich’s 2011/12 football campaign stabbed home from close range to score his club’s very first goal of this new 2012/13 Bundesliga season, as well, and give the visitors a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.

SpVgg Greuther Fuerth, whose best opportunity arrived with a free kick that Schmidtgal curled over the crossbar, opened up a bit more after the break but, inevitably, exposed itself at the back more as a result. A surgical pass from Shaqiri sent Bayern Munich’s Holland international winger ARJEN ROBBEN off and running into the box unopposed. Die Kleeblaetter Torhueter MAX GRUEN, the youth team product of Germany’s most successful football side ever who turned out for the Bayern Munich II reserves before transferring north to SpVgg Greuther Fuerth a few years ago, kept the Dangerous Dutchman out but on hand to nod home another friendly rebound and double the visitors’ margin was Croatia international MARIO MANDZUKIC.

Mandzukic, who formally opened his Bayern Munich account in the German Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund and added a brace in the first round of the D.F.B. Pokal against SSV Jahn Regensburg, completes the unique hat trick of at least one goal in a third consecutive competitive match (each of a different nature) for his brand new Bavarian employers.

The visitors from the south were never really threatened again thereafter and only a flying stop from Gruen prevented a goal by Robben with a little less than twenty minutes remaining. The Dangerous Dutchman ultimately did get his name on the scoresheet with a little over ten minutes to play, however. A clear cross from the tricky winger was inadvertantly deflected by defender THOMAS KLEINE over the airborne SpVgg Gruether Fuerth netminder, desperate to react in time but unable, if rather unfortunately, to prevent a third goal on the board for Bayern Munich.

A 41st goal on a 63nd career appearance in the Bundesliga did much to aid Robben, who was purchased from Spanish La Liga giant Real Madrid for a transfer fee of 25.0 million Euros four summers ago, in helping Bayern Munich truly celebrate the beginning of this historic campaign in the German top flight.

In any case, after the first round of play in the 34-match Bundesliga program, the traditional domestic powerhouse Bayern Munich stand atop the table yet again, if only on goal differential — another valuable boost to the morale of trainer JUPP HEYNCKES’ side and a continuation of the bright beginning to this most noteworthy term.
