2012 European Championships : Germany 4 – Greece 2

Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER (7) of Bayern Munich is tackled by Greece captain and midfielder KOSTAS KATSOURANIS (21) of Panathinaikos Athens during the 2012 UEFA European Championships quarterfinal match at the PGE Arena in Gdansk, Poland.

Three unanswered second half goals all scored within a 13-minute span proved to be very unfortunate for the competition’s 2004 titlist as single-minded GERMANY overwhelmed luckless GREECE 4-2 at the quarterfinal stage of the 2012 UEFA European Championships.

Spielfuehrer PHILIPP LAHM had taken a very proactive approach to on-field leadership and sent Germany to the lead just before the break. The Bayern Munich left back did well to control Real Madrid midfielder MESUT OEZIL’s pass with his chest first time and lost a potential defender in the process. The captain calmly strode forth to lash a right-footed laser which swerved viciously past Greece goalkeeper MICHALIS SIFAKIS of FC Aris Thessaloniki and met the side netting at the far post for a most emphatic opening goal.

The Greeks hauled themselves right back into the match, however, with a lightning counterattack only ten minutes into the second half. Racing down the right wing, striker DIMITRIS SALPINGIDIS of PAOK Thessaloniki expertly curled an inviting ball into the path of legionnaire GIORGOS SAMARAS. Neither of the Bundesliga teammates, defender JEROME BOATENG and goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER of Bayern Munich, could intervene effectively and so the Glasgow Celtic winger forced the ball home at close range to bring Greece level.

Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER (1) of Bayern Munich smothers the ball in advance of Greece striker THEOFANIS GEKAS (17) of Turkish side Samsunspor, the 32-year-old veteran who scored 55 goals in 133 Bundesliga matches for Vfl Bochum, Bayer Leverkusen, SC Hertha Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt before signing on in the Super Lig this past January, during the 2012 UEFA European Championships quarterfinal match at the PGE Arena in Gdansk, Poland.

A minute after the hour, the Germans who would enjoy two-thirds of the ball and outshoot the Greeks 24-9 on the whole of the evening, initiated a massive response of their own. The overlapping right back Boateng floated a ball into the area which yet another Real Madrid midfielder, the former Vfb Stuttgart man SAMI KHEDIRA, greeted for a thunderous volley. Sifakis never had a chance as the rocket skimmed in off the crossbar for Khedira, whose last goal for Deutschland decided the game for third place at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

A free kick from Oezil in the 68th minute allowed aging veteran striker MIROSLAV KLOSE, the 34-year-old legionnaire who scored 12 goals in the Italian Serie A for SS Lazio Rome this past season, to win an aerial duel with both Sifakis and defender KYRIAKOS PAPADOPOULOS of Bundesliga club Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen in the box and leave the Greek down a pair.

Not so long after recording his 64th career international goal, Klose was instrumental in the creation of Germany’s fourth following a thru-ball from Oezil, as well. Sifakis came off his line and thwarted the Polish-born poacher but the rebound fell perfectly for Borussia Moenchengladbach attacker MARCO REUS, who hammered another spectacular drive which also entered the net via the underside of the crossbar. The Greeks, for all intents and purposes, were through although Salpingidis did pull one back from the spot very late in the contest.

Germany marched into the semifinal round of the UEFA European Championships for the eighth time (’72, ’76, ’80, ’88, ’92, ’96, ’08, ’12) in the last 11 tournaments starting in 1972, the year West Germany shutout the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics 3-0 in the Final.
