A goalkeeper certainly needs to be able to do more than just make saves in order to be competent, to speak nothing of world class. Taking high balls out of the air and knowing when to come off the line in order to smother dangerous passes in the penalty box are just two examples of important actions required of a goalkeeper which are not rewarded with a ‘save’ on the match statistics sheet. Still, the ‘save-percentage’ number does provide certain information which respect to any goalkeeper’s form over the course of a football season.

Under pressure from Holland international KLAAS-JAN HUNTELAAR of Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen, the former Real Madrid and AC Milan striker who leads the German top flight with 27 goals heading into the final round of this 2011/12 Bundesliga season, veteran Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper ROMAN WEIDENFELLER pulls in a high ball during the 140th Revierderby last month at the Veltins Arena in Gelsenkirchen.
