Spieltag # 32

1 – WERDER BREMEN —————— Naldo 51′
2 – BAYERN MUNICH —————— own goal 75′, Ribery 90′

An unfortunate own goal with only a quarter hour to play set the stage for yet another last-minute strike as understrength BAYERN MUNICH rallied dramatically to defeat host WERDER BREMEN 2-1 on a day when the Bundesliga title was formally decided somewhere else.

With the a journey to Spain for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal tie with current La Liga leader Real Madrid looming in midweek, the Bayern Munich trainer decided to take absolutely no chances. Only three of the players who had appeared with the Startelf for the dramatic 2-1 first leg victory over Los Blancos were selected for the weekend match with Werder Bremen by JUPP HEYNCKES, who once steered Real Madrid to the UEFA Champions League crown in the spring of the 1997-98 campaign. And so, youthful Japan international midfielder TAKASHI USAMI, the 19-year-old on loan for the season from Gamba Osaka who has netted six goals in 18 matches for the Bayern Munich reserves this term, started a Bundesliga match for the very first time in his career.

NILS PETERSEN, the summer signing from FC Energie Cottbus who led the 2.Bundesliga with 25 goals last season, was another inserted into the line-up. The 23-year-old striker generated the two most-threatening chances in the opening forty-five minutes for Bayern Munich and was unlucky to have Werder Bremen goalkeeper TIM WIESE, number two on the national team these days, deny his header from about seven or eight yards out in the 19th minute. The fortunes of Petersen, who has scored four goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich this term, deteriorated even further when his fierce drive smashed off the crossbar just before the halftime break.

Werder Bremen went to the lead shortly after the restart by taking full advantage of a corner kick in the 51st minute. Austria international midfielder ZLATKO JUNUZOVIC, who was purchased by Werder Bremen from FK Austria Vienna for a reported transfer fee of 800,000 Euros during the Winterpause, floated over a ball that veteran Peru international CLAUDIO PIZARRO essentially nodded on and with great effect, as well. Brazil international defender NIVALDO, the 29-year-old veteran who has been with Werder Bremen since arriving from RS Juventude in the summer of 2005, chested down and thumped the ball home before celebrating his 22nd career Bundesliga goal.

Heynckes, however, was not about to concede all three points without offering some resistance and, in accordance, sent on a trio of replacement players including in-from France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY, the man had scored such an important goal in the UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg match with Real Madrid.

The arrival of Ribery breathed a new life into the Bavarian attack, which found itself level with a quarter of an hour to go. At the heart of this development had been the dimunitive Frenchman on yet another of his trademark runs down the left flank. Under no pressure whatsoever, the unlucky Nivaldo tragically turned Ribery’s cross into the back of his own Werder Bremen net and completely changed the course of the whole game in the process.

Bayern Munich now pushed for a winner but Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER could not find the target with a header from close range. Ribery fired a low, left-footer that did not miss by much. And Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS, one of the three second half subsitututes sent on by Heynckes, curled a shot past the diving Wiese but just wide of the post.

In the final minute of regulation, Ribery found himself with the ball in the box once again following a sharp diagonal pass from Kroos. After a fake to the right which left youthful Werder Bremen midfielder ALEKSANDAR STEVANOVIC, the 20-year-old on his first career starting assignment in the Bundesliga, frozen for a crucial moment, the Fabulous Frenchman flashed to his left and unleashed a left-footed, pinpointed-laser that tucked inside the far post and afforded the outstretched Wiese no chance. And, thus, Ribery recorded his career-best 12th Bundesliga goal of the season in sensational fashion to bring Bayern Munich a second last-minute victory in as many matches.
