UEFA Champions League
Group A, Matchday # 6

2 – MANCHESTER CITY (Eng) ———— Silva 37′, Y. Toure 52′
0 – BAYERN MUNICH (Ger)

A goal on either side of the halftime whistle against a reserve side was still not enough to see the wealthy Arab Sheikh’s side through to the next round of the competition as MANCHESTER CITY defeated BAYERN MUNICH “B” 2-0 on the final day of match play in Group A of the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern Munich, of course, had already clinched first place at the top of the table coming into the contest and had little reason to do more than rest key players while giving others the valuable opportunity to get some game experience. Meanwhile, Germany international HANS-JOERG BUTT was called into the Startelf for just the second time this season between the sticks and wore the Spielfuehrer’s armband for understrength Bayern Munich. The 37-year-old World Cup veteran was officially credited with six saves on the evening by the official website of the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester City, for all their millions of English pounds spent on high-priced players, were actually made to work for everything they got on home ground against the willing Bayern back-ups. UEFA put the ball possession in City’s favor but at only a 52-48% ratio. One problem for Bayern Munich was that the Bavarian reserves could only get three of nine attempts on England international goalkeeper JOE HART in the Manchester City net.

The news from Spain in the second half that visiting Italian Serie A side SSC Napoli had assumed a 2-0 advantage against La Liga outfit CF Villarreal took pretty much all of the starch out of any celebrations Manchester City supporters may have wanted to engage in.
