Bayern Munich : Season Begins In Lower Saxony

Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN, who scored 13 goals for die Roten in all competitions following last year’s Winterpause after missing the entire first half of the season thru injury, will, once again, miss the opening of a new campaign and not play for BAYERN MUNICH, who are also currently without France World Cup winger Franck Ribery, in the D.F.B. Pokal match with 2.Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig in Lower Saxony on Monday.

Bundesliga Rekordmeister BAYERN MUNICH and in-coming trainer JUPP HEYNCKES will formally begin their competitive 2011-12 football schedule with a Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal first round tie in Lower Saxony opposite once-proud Eintracht Braunschweig, newly promoted this season to the German second division.

The match will mark the first competitive meeting between the two clubs since the final day of the 1984-85 Bundesliga season, when table-topping Bayern Munich bested soon-to-be-demoted Eintracht Braunschweig by the mininum scoreline on the strength of a goal from West Germany international striker DIETER HOENESS.

The last collision in the German Cup, however, was won by Bundesliga original member and 1967 champion Eintracht Braunschweig, who managed to pull off a 2-0 second round upset of the mighty Bavarians back in mid-October of 1982.

Home-standing Eintracht Braunschweig will be hoping for goals from the veteran attack pairing of DOMINICK KUMBELA and team captain DENNIS KRUPPKE. The 27-year-old Kumbela, a native of the Congo Democratic Republic who has been kicking around in the lesser German leagues since 2003, led the Lower Saxony club with 19 league goals a year ago while the skipper Kruppke, a 31-year-old who got 54 Bundesliga games in midfield for SC Freiburg almost a decade ago, chipped in with 16 strikes. Both players have already registed one goal apiece in Eintracht Braunschweig’s first two matches to start the new 2.Bundesliga season, as well.

Eintracht Braunschweig, under the direction of one-time Germany U-21 international and former veteran 2.Bundesliga defender TORSTEN LIEBERKNECHT, have also won their first two contests to open the 2011-12 campaign at their new level.
