Bayern Munich Breeze Past Eintracht Braunschweig In DFB Pokal

Brazil international RAFINHA of Bayern Munich, the one-time Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen defender who was purchased from Italian Serie A side CFC Genoa this summer, battles for the ball with Eintracht Braunschweig striker DOMINICK KUMBELA, the Democratic Republic of Congo sharpshooter who led the Lower Saxony club with 19 goals in the 3.Bundesliga last season, during the the first round DFB Pokal match at the sold-out Eintracht Stadion an der Hamburger Strasse in central northern Germany.

Bolstered by a pair of clear penalties in the first half, record German champion BAYERN MUNICH breezed to a very professional 3-0 victory over 2.Bundesliga Aufstieger EINTRACHT BRAUNSCHWEIG in the first round of the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal.

Eintracht Braunschweig had last met Bayern Munich in the German Cup almost 30 years ago, before most of this year’s match participants had even been born. Still, the Lower Saxony side had surprised the Bavarians 2-0 in October of 1982 and current trainer TORSTEN LIEBERKNECHT was hoping history might, perhaps, repeat itself. Plus Eintracht Braunschweig, just promoted out of the third division this year, won their first two 2.Bundesliga games this summer to start fast.

But Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER, perhaps the Bavarians’ best player on the evening, was fouled twice in the box by Eintracht Braunschweig defenders. The first occurrence arrived before even ten minutes had been played and the subsequent spot kick was cooly converted by Germany international MARIO GOMEZ, the leading scorer in all the Bundesliga last season who totaled 39 goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich. A most meaningful tally for Gomez, then, as the central striker did struggle to net balls in Testspiele this summer.

Mueller was taken down again in the area with less than ten minutes to play before the break; Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, who hit a brace against Werder Bremen in the DFB Pokal and produced eight goals in all games for Bayern Munich a year ago, stepped up and again sent Eintracht Braunschweig goalkeeper MARJAN PETKOVIC the wrong way to double the advantage for die Roten.

Bayern Munich and trainer JUPP HEYNCKES seemed very content in the second half to keep possession and operated at a very deliberate, controlled pace. With less than ten minutes remaining in the match, the influential Mueller tacked on a third for the Bavarians after a long free kick from Schweinsteiger had was deflected by the wall. The still 21-year-old winger, who finished second on the team last season with 18 goals in all competitions, fended off Eintracht Braunschweig defenders and hooked a loose ball up and over the hapless Petkovic.

A total of 36.5 million Euros was invested on a trio of players by Bayern Munich this summer in a concerned effort to strengthen the defense. All three — defenders RAFINHA and JEROME BOATENG as well as shot-stopper MANUEL NEUER — appeared in the Startelf against Eintracht Braunschweig and helped keep the sheet clean in the Bavarians’ very first competitive match of the new 2011-12 season. Not a bad return for die Roten, if only for the time being.

Pokal conquest of TSV Germania Windeck to begin last season, is congratulated after scoring the Bavarians’ very first goal of this 2011-12 campaign from the spot against Eintracht Braunschweig in the D.F.B.
