COPA DEL REY
quarterfinals, first leg
January 13, 2010

3 – Real Madrid —————– Sergio Ramos 14′, Ronaldo 61′, Oezil 90′
1 – Atletico Madrid ———— Forlan 7′

An early goal conceded apparently only served to stiffen the resolve of the hosts as REAL MADRID recovered to roll over cross-town rival ATLETICO MADRID 3-1 in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals from the Spanish capital city.

Uruguay World Cup striker DIEGO FORLAN, the winner of the Golden Ball at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa this past summer, sent Atletico Madrid in front in only the seventh minute. Spain World Cup champion goalkeeper IKER CASILLAS left the Real Madrid cage to confront and upend Atletico Madrid’s Argentina World Cup reserve striker SERGIO AGUERO. With play correctly allowed to continue, the ball rolled to Forlan on the left, who bulged the back of the unguarded net.

Real Madrid rebounded soon enough, however. A corner kick from Argentina World Cup winger ANGEL DI MARIA was met by the head of Spain World Cup fullback SERGIO RAMOS with sufficient force to equalize for Real Madrid in the 14th minute. A second goal of the season, then, and first in the Copa del Rey for the 24-year-old defender who has already earned 72 caps for Spain.

The second half belonged to Germany World Cup MESUT OEZIL, who continues to grow in leaps and bounds for Real Madrid in Spain.

Just after the hour, the German maestro delivered a ball to slice open the heart of the Atletico defense and allow Portugal World Cup striker CRISTIANO RONALDO to stab home from close range. Atletico Madrid’s young goalkeeper DAVID DE GEA might have done better to come collect the ball as compared to standing with his boots nailed to the line. Ronaldo, meanwhile, counted his 31st goal of the season in all competitions for Real Madrid.

Oezil put the result beyond doubt for Real Madrid in the 90th minute after picking up a loose ball and calmly slotting past De Gea for his second goal in the Copa del Rey this term; overall, the 22-year-old playmaker has now scored eight goals in all competitions for Real Madrid this season.

Atletico Madrid, the regining champions of the UEFA Europa League for the time being, have now gone 19 consecutive games without a win against cross-town rival Real Madrid.
