LA LIGA
Matchday # 17
1/3/2011

2 – CF Getafe —————— Parejo 29′, Albin 85′
3 – Real Madrid ————– Ronaldo pen 11′, 57′, Oezil 19′

A late goal conceded with only ten men on the pitch put some supporters on the edge of their seats for the final few minutes of the match no doubt, nonetheless, visiting REAL MADRID fended off CF GETAFE 3-2 to retain second place in the Spanish Primera Division, two points behind dreaded arch-rival FC Barcelona.

With Christmas more than a week gone by, the men of Portuguese manager JOSE MOURINHO were belatedly gifted a penalty with a dozen minutes yet to be played. Argentina World Cup winger ANGEL DI MARIA might have been booked for trying to deceive. But Portugal World Cup striker CRISTIANO RONALDO dispatched the resulting spot kick to give Real Madrid the early advantage in the 11th minute.

Di Maria was directly involved in a second goal eight minutes later. A surgical pass sent Germany World Cup midfielder MESUT OEZIL, who leads Los Blancos with six assists in La Liga, in to score his fifth goal in the Spanish top flight since a summer move from German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen. The 22-year-old Oezil, who has totaled seven goals now in all competitions this season, has recorded a goal in three of Real Madrid’s last four matches.

Real Madrid youth product and Spanish U-21 international DANIEL PAREJO pulled a goal back for CF Getafe with a lethal strike after dancing through the heart of the Los Blancos defense minus the pair of Portugal World Cup center backs RICARDO CARVALHO and PEPE.

Parejo scored 10 goals in 33 games for Castilla, the Segunda Division B side that is the reserve team of Real Madrid, during the 2007-08 campaign. The 21-year-old midfielder was supposed to spend the next year out on loan with English League Championship (old Division Two) side Queens Park Rangers in London. Parejo was recalled in December, however, due to mounting injuries with the Spanish capital city club and played five games with the Real Madrid first team to close out the 2008-09 season.

Parejo was sold to CF Getafe for 3.0 million Euros in the summer of 2009 but Real Madrid retain an option to repurchase the player for the prearranged fee of 5.0 million Euros.

Ronaldo re-establish a two-goal lead for Real Madrid with his second goal of the game shortly before the hour mark. A terrible pass at the back by former Los Blancos backstop JORDI CODINA, who, after five seasons with Castilla, played one La Liga match in two years for the Real Madrid first team before a free transfer to CF Getafe in the summer of 2009, created the chance. France international striker KARIM BENZEMA provided to ball for the planet’s most expensive player to slot home for his La Liga-leading 19th goal this term.

The Portuguese plunderer now counts 27 goals in all competitions for Real Madrid this season.

Real Madrid’s Spain World Cup champion reserve defender ALVARO ARBELOA was dismissed for a second yellow card offense in the 82nd minute, which set the stage for a tense finish. A terrible clearance of a cross by Real Madrid’s Brazil international defender MARCELO enabled Uruguayan second half substitute striker JUAN ANGEL ALBIN to cash in from close range, once again, bring CF Getafe to within a goal of Real Madrid. But, Los Blancos were, indeed, able to kill off the last minutes of the match.
