PSV EINDHOVEN will conclude the calendar year of 2010 on a high note as leaders of the Dutch Eredivisie and winners of Group I in the UEFA Europa League — not a bad record at all to compile for the first half of the 2010-11 campaign.

The Rood-witten lost only two league games under first-year manager FRED RUTTEN but still finished in third place eight points behind champions FC Twente Enschede last season. In the second season under the stewardship of the former FC Twente Enschede defender, PSV Einhoven have improved in several areas dramatically. Much of this success can be attributed to the acquisitions of the Boeren in the transfer market this summer.

JEREMAIN LENS, bought from AZ 67 Alkmaar for a fee thought to be 6.25 million Euros, has scored five goals in attack for PSV Eindhoven and earned his first four caps for the Netherlands this season; the 23-year-old winger also recorded his first-ever international goal in a friendly match against Ukraine this past August.

Three of the new arrivals went straight into the first team at the back for PSV Eindhoven in front of Sweden international goalkeeper ANDREAS ISAKSSON to great effect and have certainly contributed to the improvement on offense by the Peasants, as well.

Canada international ATIBA HUTCHINSON has proved himself an astute signing on a free transfer from FC Copenhagen. The 27-year-old, who also scored against Ukraine in a friendly for his country earlier this season, was voted the Danish Super Liga Player of the Year last season for his work in midfield but has mostly been used as a fullback by PSV Eindhoven. Hutchinson has started 18 Eredivisie games for PSV while missing just one — only three players on the whole squad have appeared more.

23-year-old Brazilian MARCELO, a purchase of 2.5 million Euros from Polish outfit Wislaw Krakow, has started 16 games in central defense his first season in the Netherlands. The return of 32-year-old Holland international WILFRED BOUMA after five seasons with English Premier League side Aston Villa has been important, as well. Another free transfer, the experienced Bouma (35 caps, 2 goals) has started a baker’s dozen matches in the league and contributed a pair of goals to the attack.

The form of both Bouma and Marcelo have made it difficult for Mexico World Cup defender FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ, not to mention Bulgaria international STANISLAV MANOLEV, to consistently get a game for PSV Eindhoven this season.

21-year-old Brazilian striker JONATHAN REIS, who had his contract canceled by PSV Eindhoven after failing a drug test and refusing the club’s offer to help with addiction treatment late last January but was given a second chance in the summer, is now out for the season after tearing ligaments in his knee in the 3-1 win over Roda JC Kerkrade on December 19.
========================================

Having scored 72 goals in the Eredivisie last term, PSV Eindhoven are on track to easily surpass that total this season. The Rood-witten have already registered 53 goals in the first 19 matches of the 2010-11 campaign. Sweden international attacking midfielder OLA TOIVONEN, who finished second with 13 league goals for PSV in 2009-10, is on target to top that total having scored 11 times in the Eredivisie thus far this season.

As the calendar changes to 2011, PSV Eindhoven will have to make due without a pair of influential players from the first half of the season, however.

Brazilian striker JONATHAN REIS recorded eight goals in 11 Eredivisie matches and added another in the UEFA Europa League after forcing his way into the line-up but tore knee ligaments in the final league match before the winter break versus Roda JC Kerkrade; the 21-year-old is out for the remainder of the 2010-11 schedule.

PSV Eindhoven will also be short the services of Holland international midfielder IBRAHIM AFELLAY. The 24-year-old midfielder, who has won 31 caps and scored two goals for his country, has been sold to Spanish La Liga giant FC Barcelona for a transfer fee of 3.0 million Euros. Afellay was fourth on PSV with six goals in the Eredivisie and, overall, totaled seven goals in 26 games for the Boeren.

Whether or not a midfield replacement for Afellay is recruited this winter remains to be seen. Hutchinson could be switched back from defense while Holland international OTMAN BAKKAL is another option, too. The 25-year-old midfielder scored 11 goals on 31 Eredivisie appearances for PSV Eindhoven last season.

As far as the injury to Reis is concerned, the result will likely be more match time for Sweden international striker MARCUS BERG; the 24-year-old striker, on loan for the season from German Bundesliga club SV Hamburg, has scored four goals in twelve games (seven starts) in the Eredivisie for PSV Eindhoven.
