WERDER BREMEN, sitting 14th out of eighteen teams in the German Bundesliga, will be moving ahead without its leading goal-scorer when the season resumes in 2011 after the Winterpause.
Portugal World Cup striker HUGO ALMEIDA, who tops die Gruen-Weissen with nine goals in the Bundesliga and has scored 11 goals in all competitions thus far this season, has been sold by Werder Bremen to Turkish Super Lig club JK Besiktas Istanbul for a transfer fee of 2.0 million Euros.
The 26-year-old striker, who was originally purchased by the north German club from Portuguese side FC Porto for 4.0 million Euros after a loan season in the summer of 2007, has not played for Werder Bremen, however, in the Bundesliga since being sent off late in the match with FC St. Pauli of Hamburg in late November; Almeida, who scored just one goal in Europe this term, made his last apperance for the the Green-Whites in the UEFA Champions League match with Italian side Inter Milan on December 7.
JK Besiktas Istanbul are managed by former West Germany international midfielder BERND SCHUSTER and looking to beef up their attack ahead of their February UEFA Europa League round of 32 knockout tie with Ukranian side Dynamo Kiev.
Almeida is the second Portugal World Cup player signed this week by JK Besiktas Istanbul and Schuster after the addition of 31-year-old veteran winger SIMAO (Simao Sabrosa Fonseca Sabrosa), who has earned 85 caps and scored 22 goals for his country, from Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid.
JK Besiktas Istanbul had already acquired 27-year-old Portugal international winger RICARDO QUARESMA (27 caps, three goals) from Italian Serie A side and reigning European champion Inter Milan to start this 2010-11 season.
