COPA DEL REY
round of sixteen, first leg
December 22, 2010

8 – Real Madrid —————— Benzema 6′, 32′, 69′, Oezil 10′, Ronaldo 45′, 72′, 74′, Leon 90′
0 – Levante Valencia

Four goals on each side of the halftime whistle enabled REAL MADRID to utterly obliterate LEVANTE VALENCIA 8-0 in the first leg of the Spanish Copa del Rey round of sixteen with Christmas only a few days away.

In the previous meeting at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia in late September, UD Levante had managed to hold out for a 0-0 draw despite being totally dominated in the La Liga match by Real Madrid — no such luck this holiday season with Uruguay international GUSTAVO MUNUA, making his first start since a 4-1 loss to CF Getafe in mid-September, between the sticks for the visitors at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

France international striker KARIM BENZEMA, who boasts but a single goal in 15 La Liga apperances this term, scored two of Real Madrid’s first three goals and finished with his second hat trick — both in Cup competitions — of this season.

Perhaps to celebrate the coming holiday, Portugal World Cup winger CRISTIANO RONALDO recorded three goals in the rout of Levante Valencia for Real Madrid; the planet’s most expensive player upped his season total to 25 strikes in the process.

Germany World Cup midfielder MESUT OEZIL also added a goal, his sixth of the season in all competitions for Los Blancos, as did his second half replacement, former Spain U-21 international midfielder PEDRO LEON.

The eight-goal landslide leaves Levante Valencia little hope for the return leg against Portuguese manager JOSE MOURINHO’s Real Madrid to be played after the New Year on January 5.
