To help celebrate the Holiday Season, the blog breaks out the highlights of the wild and wooly 42nd Scottish League (Skol) Cup Final contested by GLASGOW RANGERS and FC ABERDEEN at Hampden Park in Glasgow from October 25th of 1987.

A plethora of internationals and quite a number of World Cup players for both sides are on display in a thrilling match that ended 3-3 after extra time and required penalties to decide.

All five Rangers were on target in the shootout against FC Aberdeen’s three-time World Cup goalkeeper JIM LEIGHTON, who played every match for Scotland at the FIFA final tournaments of 1986, 1990 and 1998 after making his international debut against East Germany in October of 1982.

Wales international PETER NICHOLAS was in his one and only season of Scottish football with FC Aberdeen after transferring from English club Luton Town for 350,000 English pounds in the summer of 1987. The former Crystal Palace and FC Arsenal midfielder skipped his shot off the top of the crossbar, however, which proved to be the difference in the 1987 Skol Cup Final. Following the 1987-88 campaign, Nicholas returned to London when Aberdeen the transferred the Welshman to FC Chelsea for another 350,000 English pounds.

Aficionados of the old North American Soccer League will note the presence of Northern Ireland’s two-time World Cup defender JIMMY NICHOLL, who played 65 NASL games and scored 11 goals in three seasons with the Toronto Blizzard from 1982 until 1984, with 1987 Skol Cup winners Glasgow Rangers.

Also featuring for Rangers and scoring in the shootout of the 1987 Scottish League Cup Final is 1982 England World Cup striker TREVOR FRANCIS, who scored 38 goals in 33 games over two NASL seasons with the Detroit Express in 1978 and 1979 and later played four Serie A seasons with Sampdoria of Genoa before moving to Glasgow from Italian club Atalanta Bergamo.

Francis was recognized as the first player ever sold for 1.0 million English pounds between two English clubs when Nottingham Forrest bought the England international striker from Birmingham City in February of 1979. Francis first arrived in Italy after Sampdoria paid Manchester City 700,000 English pounds following the 1982 World Cup in Spain. Atalanta, who had invested 800,000 English pounds in Francis, absorbed a heavy loss when the 33-year-old left for Scotland in 1987.

Rangers paid just 75,000 English pounds for the aging striker.

Francis failed to score a goal in 18 First Division games for Glasgow Rangers over the course of his first season in Scotland and returned to England with Queens Park Rangers for free in March of 1988.
