LA LIGA
Matchday # 12
11/20/2010

1 – Athletic Bilbao ——— Llorente 40′

A pair of goals in the early part of the second half allowed still-unbeaten REAL MADRID to roll 5-1 over visiting Basque side ATHLETIC BILBAO and remain at the summit of the Spanish Primera Division.

Portugal World Cup striker CRISTIANO RONALDO racked up three goals for Real Madrid and ran his La Liga leading total to 14 from a dozen league matches this season.

Ronaldo’s second goal, off a free kick from a good 35 yards out, was an early Christmas gift from Athletic Bilbao custodian GORKA IRAIZOZ with the hat trick coming from the spot in the 90th minute.

Spain World Cup defender SERGIO RAMOS registered his first goal of the season, from the penalty spot, shortly before the hour arrived after Argentina World Cup midfielder ANGEL DI MARIA was dropped in the box; Ronaldo’s second goal of the game in the 62nd minute effectively settled the issue.

Spain World Cup reserve striker FERNANDO LLORENTE, who has been linked in some reports with a transfer to Real Madrid, had given Athletic Bilbao, who have now lost 13 consecutive matches at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid, some hope after halving the deficit shortly before the break.

Real Madrid, with first-year Portuguese manager JOSE MOURINHO serving the second of his two-match suspension, won for the tenth time in a dozen La Liga games this season and, overall, have now claimed victory on 14 of 18 outings in all competitions.
