LA LIGA
Matchday # 11
11/14/2010

0 – Sporting Gijon
1 – Real Madrid ————— Higuain 82′

An opportunistic goal on a fumbled ball with eight and a half minutes remaining in regulation was enough to allow visiting REAL MADRID to beat SPORTING GIJON 1-0 and retain leadership of the Spanish Primera Division.

A shame then for Sporting Gijon’s 32-year-old veteran goalkeeper JUAN PABLO COLINAS, who had strung together several solid saves in the match.

Colinas was, however, fortunate early on in the 10th minute after the shot of Argentina World Cup striker GONZALO HIGUAIN of Real Madrid struck the post and rebounded harmlessly straight back into his hands.

Real Madrid were, of course, without Portuguese manager JOSE MOURINHO, who received a two-match sideline suspension after being banished from the touchline by the referee during the mid-week Copa del Rey encounter with third division Real Murica and watched the game with Sporting Gijon from high above in a box at the Estadio El Molinon.

Real Madrid registered the late winner when Spain World Cup champion defender SERGIO RAMOS sent a cross far post for France international KARIM BENZEMA, a second half substitute; Colinas could not hold the header from the 22-year-old striker and the Argentine Higuain pounced to poke home the rebound for his sixth goal in La Liga and ninth strike of the season in all competitions for Los Blancos.

Unbeaten Real Madrid, who have won 13 of 17 matches to start the reign of King Mourinho and his German mercenaries, continue to lead arch-rival and pretenders to the La Liga throne FC Barcelona by a single point.
