USSR international defender SERGEI GORLUKOVICH, who had transferred from Lokomotiv Moscow to Borussia Dortmund in West Germany, was one of the first Soviet players to ever sign on with a Bundesliga club.

IGOR BELANOV, the 1986 Euopean Footballer of the Year, generated big headlines when he moved from Dynamo Kiev to Borussia Moenchengladbach in October of 1989. The 29-year-old striker made his Bundesliga debut for die Borussen on November 4th, just five days before the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Belanov, however scored just four goals in 14 matches his first season in the Bundesliga and, after no goals on 10 apperances to start his second, the Soviet striker was sold to second division Eintract Braunschweig in January of 1991.

ALEXANDER BORODYUK, a key man on the USSR’s gold medal team at the 1988 Summer Olympics, was a hit in the 2.Bundesliga after leaving Dynamo Moscow and scored 29 goals over two seasons to help Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen attain promotion to the top flight.
