UEFA Europa League
Group Stage
10/21/2010

1 – Vfb Stuttgart (GER) ——— Marica 28′
0 – CF Getafe (SPA)

A solitary goal shortly before the half hour mark was made to stand up over the ninety minutes as Bundesliga cellar-dwellers VFB STUTTGART shutout visiting Spanish side CF GETAFE 1-0 and maintained its perfect record in Group H of the UEFA Europa League.

Vfb Stuttgart, who have won just one match while losing six of their first eight league games to start the new German season and have axed Swiss coach CHRISTIAN GROSS along the way, went to the lead in the 28th minute.

The Swabians’ Germany World Cup striker CACAU chipped a ball over the CF Getafe back line to release Vfb Stuttgart’s Romania international CIPRIAN MARICA on the right. The 25-year-old striker had his first shot saved by visiting Argentine goalkeeper OSCAR USTARI but Marica was calmly able to control the rebound and, from a bit of an angle, casually roll the ball into the back of the net.

Marica, who scored 10 goals in 25 Bundesliga games last season, has struggled this term with just one goal from seven league contests heading into the match with the Spaniards in Europe; the goal against CF Getable marked the Romanian’s first in Europe this season for Vfb Stuttgart.

The Swabians created a plethora of chances throughout the match but were consistently denied by a combination of poor finishing and the work of Utsari in the CF Getafe goal.

Still, 22-year-old SVEN ULREICH, who replaced the now retired, one-time Germany World Cup goalkeeper JENS LEHMANN between the sticks for the Swabians, was required to make an outstanding stop on CF Getafe club captain MANU DEL MORAL late in the match to preserve all three points for Vfb Stuttgart.
