LA LIGA
Match Day # 9
10/30/2010

1 – Hercules Alicante ——— Trezeguet 3′
3 – Real Madrid —————— Di Maria 52′, Ronaldo 82′, 86′

Two goals in the final ten minutes from the world’s most expensive player powered visiting La Liga leaders REAL MADRID to a come-from-behind 3-1 victory over would-be once again giant-killers HERCULES ALICANTE to remain on top of the mountain in Spain.

Hercules Alicante, who earlier in the Primera Division season cut down mighty FC Barcelona and claimed the scalp of CF Valencia, took an early lead in only the thrid minute of the match — 33-year-old veteran France international striker DAVID TREZEGUET left Real Madrid’s Spain World Cup champion goalkeeper IKER CASILLAS little chance with a looping header that found the far right corner following the curling cross of Portuguese midfielder TIAGO GOMES.

The home side defended well for the opening forty-five minutes and might have added a second had not Trezeguet’s point-blank header been kept out by Casillas.

Real Madrid, however, had never lost in 19 contests and collected fifteen wins in the process at the Estadio Jose Rico Perez, a fact of which, perhaps, Portuguese manager JOSE MOURINHO reminded his troops at the halftime break.

Real Madrid stormed back after the break and grabbed a quick and gifted equalizer just seven minutes in after Hercules Alicante goalkeeper JUAN CALATAYUD completely botched a ball hit right at him from long-range by Portugal World Cup star CRISTIANO RONALDO.

Argentina World Cup midfielder ANGEL DI MARIA, the off-season arrival from Portuguese club SL Benfica of Lisbon who set Los Blancos back an initial payment of 25.0 million Euros, gleefully accepted the rebound to score his third La Liga goal and fourth overall in all competitions for Real Madrid this season.

The capital city club, who controlled the match on the whole and once again posted a lop-sided advantage in shots-at-goal, tightened the screws increasingly on Hercules Alicante after the equalizer.

Real Madrid were rewarded eight minutes from time when Ronaldo thumped home yet another rebound. Brazilian defender MARCELO took a back heel from France international striker KARIM BENZEMA on an overlapping run then returned the ball to the Real Madrid substitute in the box. Benzema’s shot through three players was blocked by Calatayud but the rebound went straight to the Portugal World Cup star striker.

The substitute Benzema, whose lack of goals for Real Madrid this season was only magnified by his failure to score in his Copa del Rey start against third division Real Murica earlier this week, set up the second goal by Ronaldo, as well; after being sent into space on the right by Di Maria, the France international striker pulled the ball back for the Portuguese starlet to dispatch ruthlessly in the 86th minute.

The brace for Ronaldo, who cost Los Blancos 96.0 million Euros (eighty million English pounds) to sign from English Premier League club Manchester United in June of 2009, boosted the 25-year-old’s total to 11 goals in nine La Liga games for Real Madrid this season including an astounding nine goals from the last four Primera Division contests.
