UEFA Europa League
Group Stage
10/21/2010

3 – Manchester City (ENG) ————- Adebayor 13′, 25′, 73′
1 – KKS Lech Poznan (POL) ———— Tshibamba 50′

A hat trick from Togo international striker EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR propelled MANCHESTER CITY to a 3-1 victory over visiting Polish side KKS LECH POZNAN and top of the table for Group A of the UEFA Europa League.

Adebayor’s hat trick comes with Manchester City preparing to face Arsenal in their next Premier League match. The 26-year-old Togolese striker was, of course, purchased from the London club by the Blues for the hefty transfer fee of 25.0 million English pounds in July of 2009. Adebayor, who scored 14 goals in 26 league games (25 starts) for Manchester City last season, has made just one start (with five substitute appearances) and scored no goals for manager ROBERTO MANCINI after the first eight rounds of the EPL schedule this term.

Adebayor’s goals against Lech Poznan, in fact, were the Togo international’s first of the season in any competition and, obviously, make a statement for Manchester City manager Mancini to ponder ahead of the tie with the Gunners.

Adebayor opened the scoring for Manchester City in the 13th minute of the match after accepting a ball from 34-year-old France international midfielder PATRICK VIEIRA at the top of the box and executing a sharp turn to beat 34-year-old Lech Poznan captain and Poland international defender BARTOSZ BOSACKI before shooting past Bosnia/Herzegovina international goalkeeper JASMIN BURIC low, far-post.

The former French Ligue 1 man who suited up for FC Metz and AS Monaco before signing for Arsenal for a reported 3.0 million English pounds in January of 2006 found the net a second time when inexplicably left all alone in the box roughly a dozen minutes later; a left wing cross from Spain World Cup midfielder DAVID SILVA, for whom Manchester City paid Spanish La Liga side CF Valenica 25.875 million English pounds this summer, afforded Adebayor a free header which was not wasted from ten yards out.

KKS Lech Poznan gave the considerably large number of supporters who found their way to the City of Manchester Stadium in the north of England from Poland little to shout about in the first half but found the deficit cut fifty percent just five minutes after the restart.

A curious play produced the visitor’s goal.

Poland international midfielder SLAWOMIR PESZKO went down in the box after a challenge from Manchester City defender JOLEON LESCOTT, who paused for a moment to raise his arm and signal innocence. With no whistle forthcoming, Manchester City’s Spain international defender PABLO ZABALETA sought to play the ball but stumbled for a moment which allowed Lech Poznan’s Belarus international midfielder SERGEI KRIVETS to give challenge. The resulting ricochet came to visiting defender MARCIN KIKUT, whose shot was then deflected off the shins of his teammate Krivets.

The ball then fell perfectly for Lech Poznan’s Congolese forward JOEL TSCHIBAMBA just in front of the penalty spot, who volley past England’s new first choice goalkeeper JOE HART of Manchester City with a second touch.

Later, Tschibamba had an excellent opportunity to equalize but blasted over the bar before Adebayor completed his three-goal night in the 73rd minute following another superlative ball played into the box by the Spainish midfielder Silva.

With the win, Manchester City retain leadership of Group A of the UEFA Europa League with seven points from three games; despite the loss, Lech Poznan remain in second place all alone on four points.
