UEFA Champions League
Group Stage
10/20/2010

1 – FC Twente Enschede (HOL) ———— Janssen 75′
1 – SV Werder Bremen (GER) ————– Arnautovic 80′

A goal for each side in the final quarter hour of the contest earned visiting Bundesliga club WERDER BREMEN and host Eredivisie side FC TWENTE ENSCHEDE a 1-1 draw and a share of the points in Group A of the UEFA Champions League.

Austria international MARKO ARNAUTOVIC, who played three seasons for FC Twente Enschede and spent last season on loan with UEFA Champions league titlists Inter Milan in Italy, made a highly successful return to De Grolsch Veste by snatching the equalizer for Werder Bremen ten minutes from time.

The 21-year-old striker, who scored 12 goals in 28 Eredivisie games for FC Twente two years ago but made just three Serie A appearances out on loan last term, was purchased by Werder Bremen from the Dutch club for a reported transfer fee 6.2 million Euros in early June.

Arnautovic, who came on as a substitute for Portugal World Cup striker HUGO ALMEIDA just before an hour had been played, worked a one-two with Peru international striker CLAUDIO PIZARRO to rocket a shot past FC Twente Enschede’s Bulgaria international goalkeeper NIKOLAI MIHAYLOV and score his first goal for Werder Bremen in the UEFA Champions League.

Werder Bremen would have to do without first choice TIM WIESE for more than half the contest; the 28-year-old Germany international injured his knee while hunting a high ball and had to be removed in the 37th minute.

The reserve goalkeeper for Die Gruen-Weissen, 21-year-old SEBASTIAN MIELITZ, had a grand total of two Bundesliga appearances in his career coming off the bench but acquitted himself fairly well in his UEFA Champions League debut against FC Twente Enschede in the Netherlands.

Holland international midfielder THEO JANSSEN, who has totaled three goals in nine Eredivisie matches already this term, jumped on his own rebound to score his second goal in three UEFA Champions League games this season and send FC Twente Enschede ahead of Werder Bremen in the 75th minute.

Both FC Twente Enschede and Werder Bremen remain outside of second place in Group A, behind defending tournament champion Inter Milan of Italy and English outfit Tottenham Hotspur, on two points apiece after three rounds.
