European Championships Qualifying
October 12, 2010

0 – KAZAKHSTAN
3 – GERMANY ————— Klose 48′, Gomez 76′, Podolski 85′

Despite dominating play from the opening whistle, the goals would not appear for the visiting side until the second half as GERMANY conquered KAZAKHSTAN 3-0 in the Group A qualification match for the 2012 European Championships.

Germany racked up a 12-3 advantage with shots-at-goal in the first half but went to the changing room at the break scoreless; midfielder SAMI KHEDIRA of Spanish giant Real Madrid came closest to ending the deadlock with a header in the 41st minute but saw his effort denied by the crossbar.

Veteran international MIROSLAV KLOSE, making his 105th appearance in the national team shirt of Germany, settled the visitors with a goal in the third minute of the second half. Winger LUKAS PODOLSKI of 1.FC Koeln, after a receiving a sharp pass from midfielder MESUT OEZIL of Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid on the left, squared a ball for Klose to collect and finish from about six yards out. For the 32-year-old Bayern Munich striker, the goal against Kazakhstan marked a 58th career goal for Germany.

Klose, who has no goals in six Bundesliga games for Bayern Munich to start the new season but has netted six times in four European Championships qualifiers for Germany during that span, now stands an even ten goals behind Deutschland’s all-time leading marksman, the incomparable GERD “der Bomber” MUELLER.

Midfielder HEINRICH SCHMIDTGAL of 2.Bundesliga side Rot Weiss Oberhausen cut a lively figure for Kazakhstan and did have three attempts at goal, the last of which drew a decisive save from Germany goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER of Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen.

The Germans put the final result beyond doubt with a brace in the final quarter of an hour.

Substitute MARIO GOMEZ, who replaced Bundesliga teammate Klose in the 55th minute, grabbed the Germans’ second in Astana. Like the man he replaced, the 25-year-old former Vfb Stuttgart striker has not managed a single goal for Bayern Munich in six league games so far this season. Gomez, who scored for Germany in Denmark on August 11 but has not tallied for any team since his goal for Bayern Munich against amateurs TSV Germania Windeck in the DFP Pokal on August 16, got his name on the scoresheet against Kazakhstan after a smooth one-two with the Spanish exile Oezil.

Gomez pushed his career totals for Germany to 14 goals from 40 games.

World Cup winger Podolski received a just reward for a fine match with an 85th minute strike following a powerful solo run through the Kazakhstan defense to close out the scoring for Germany.

For Podolski, perhaps hard to believe but still just 25 years old, the goal was his 42nd on his 83rd appearance for Germany.
