Group Stage

0 – Borussia Dortmund (GER)
1 – FC Sevilla (SPA) ——————— Cigarini 45+1′

A memorable night for a new manager as visiting Spanish side FC SEVILLA, with a goal just before the halftime whistle, hold off ten-man BORUSSIA DORTMUND 1-0 in Group J of the UEFA Europa League.

FC Sevilla’s Italian midfielder LUCA CIGARINI, a summer arrival from Serie A side SSC Napoli, finished off a set piece play by blasting home a loose ball from close range in time added on of the first half.

Borussia Dortmund had twice as many chances on the night as the Spanish visitors, but FC Sevilla’s 36-year-old ANDRES PALOP had a strong game between the sticks including two fine saves from Paraguay World Cup striker LUCAS BARRIOS in the first half.

Four minutes into the second half, however, Borussia Dortmund defender MARCEL SCHMELZER was given his marching orders for a second bookable offense.

Japan international midfielder SHINJU KAGAWA, who has scored six goals in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund so far this season, might have given the hosts a share of the points but struck the post in the 70th minute.

Borussia Dortmund defender MATS HUMMELS had his header cleared off the line by FC Sevilla’s Uruguay World Cup defender MARTIN CACERES in the 89th minute.

FC Sevilla’s new boss GREGORIO MANZANO, formerly in charge at Real Mallorca, makes a fine start with his new club — Borussia Dortmund’s winning streak in all competitions is stopped at seven.
