A late goal from a second half substitute secured a valueable 1-0 victory for visiting English side MANCHESTER UNITED over CF VALENCIA in Group C of the UEFA Champions League.

A goalless draw had seemed more and more likely as the defensive struggle wore on ; attempts at goal were few and far between, shots on target came at an absolute premium.

However, youthful Mexico international striker JAVIER HERNANDEZ, a summer signing from CD Guadalajara on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, hammered a picture-perfect shot to the far corner after collecting a ball pulled back from the right by another substitute striker for Manchester United, 18-year-old Italian forward FEDERICO MACHEDA.

Although Hernandez had scored in the FA Charity Shield against Chelsea to start the season, the 22-year-old’s goal against Valencia in Spain was a career-first in a formal club competition for Manchester United.

For all Manchester United’s success in Europe through the years, the defeat of Valencia marked just a second victory for the men of Old Trafford in 19 games against Spanish sides on Spanish soil.
