Despite success in the UEFA Champions League this term, WERDER BREMEN were in deperate need of a victory domestically having just one win to show from their first five Bundesliga games heading into the traditional Nordderby with SV HAMBURG.

SV Hamburg, meanwhile, had an opportunity to move up amongst the league leaders with a win over their regional Bundesliga arch-rival on the road.

And so it was a late strike from Portugal World Cup forward HUGO ALMEIDA, his second of the game and third league goal of the new season, which allowed Werder Bremen to nip their north German nemesis and move into a more reasonable mid-table positon.
