Last weekend, SK RAPID VIENNA lost the 294th Viennese Derby 1-0 to their cross-town rival, FK AUSTRIA VIENNA, at home in the Gerhard Hanappi Stadion.
This week, Die Gruen-Weissen struggled mightily with the reserve team of Die Veilchen, the FK Austria Vienna Amateurs, at the Fritz Horr Stadion in the southern part of the capital city.
RENE GARTLER, given the start up front by Rapid Vienna coach and former Austria international striker PETER PACULT over others available such as ATDHE NUHIU and Dutch international JAN VENNEGOOR of HESSELINK, gave the Green-Whites the early lead with a goal in the ninth minute following good work from Austria international midfielder VELI KAVLAK.
The amateur Violets, however, answered in the 22nd minute after a foul in the box and penalty kick conversion by captain MICHAEL FREITAG.
Thereafter, the best chances the rest of the way fell for the FK Austria Vienna Amateurs, who were strenghtened by two players — 32-year-old centerback FERNANDO TROYANSKY and 21-year-old midfielder ALEXANDER GORGON — from the senior side.
Rapid Vienna’s reserve goalkeeper, Austria international HELGE PAYER, was easily the best player on the day for die Gruen-Weissen; not necessarily happy with number two status for the Huetteldorfer and a target earlier this summer of Serbian side Partizan Belgrade, the 31-year-old turned back the spot kick of FK Austria Vienna defender REMO MALLY to send Rapid Vienna into the next round.
