Playoff round, second leg

2 – Werder Bremen (GER) ———- Rosenberg 90+3′, Pizarro 10′ et
WERDER BREMEN waited until the throes of injury time to level the tie on both aggregate and away goals, then bagged the winner in extra time to complete a remarkable comeback as SAMPDORIA GENOA crashed out despite a 3-2 victory at home in the second leg of UEFA Champions League playoff round.
It only took the first thirteen minutes of the second leg for Sampdoria to overturn the 1-3 result away in Germany last week with a brace from Italy World Cup striker GIAMPAOLO PAZZINI.
The 26-year-old forward, who scored Sampdoria’s only goal away in Bremen last week, opened the hosts’ account with a header in the eighth minute and sent his side ahead on away goals with an absolute stunning strike five minutes later; Lithuania international defender MARIUS STANKEVICIUS curled a free kick into the box that Pazzini ran onto above the penalty spot and volleyed into the net with a veritable rocket.
Prospects did not look so promising for the visitors after Italy international striker ANTONIO CASSANO’s cheeky backheel buried the square ball of Italy international winger FRANCO SEMIOLI and Sampdoria assumed a 3-0 lead on the night with about five minutes to play.
But Sweden international striker MARKUS ROSENBERG, a second-half substitute, rescued Werder Bremen in the third minute of injury time with a low, angled blast on the right outside the box that tucked neatly inside the left far post.
Peru international CLAUDIO PIZARRO, playing more as an attacking midfielder on the evening, won the tie for Werder Bremen in extra time with a low, long-range drive from about thirty yards after a nice move in midfield from Germany international winger MARKO MARIN.
