Glasgow giant RANGERS FC have grabbed veteran England international striker JAMES BEATTIE from English Premier League club STOKE CITY for a reported transfer fee of 1.5 million English pounds.

Beattie becomes the first senior signing for manager Walter Smith since United States World Cup midfielder MAURICE EDU was purchased from Major League Soccer for 2.6 million English pounds in August of 2008.

Financial realities had restricted Rangers FC from signing any new players whatsoever last season.

Beattie, Everton’s record purchase at 6.0 million English pounds in 2005 who has bagged 90 goals in 322 career English Premier League games, became surplus to requirements at Britannia Stadium after Stoke City splashed out 8.0 million English pounds on former Sunderland striker KENWYNE JONES recently.

The 32-year-old striker, who began with Blackburn Rovers but made his name with Southampton in the EPL, was also a record buy at 4.0 million English pounds for Sheffield United in August of 2007.

A native of Lancaster who has earned five caps (no goals) for England, Beattie arrives at Ibrox in the wake of the departure of the Rangers’ top scorer from last season — 26-year-old Scotland international KRIS BOYD led The Gers with 23 goals in 32 games but has head south to Middlesborough in the English Premier League.

Also splitting town, after six seasons in Glasgow, is the 31-year-old Spanish striker NACHO NOVO, who has linked up with La Liga outfit Sporting de Gijon in his native land; Novo netted six goals from 35 appearances (21 as a sub) last season in the Scottish Premier League and, overall, counted 47 goals in 179 career SPL games for the Rangers.
