UEFA Europa League
third round qualifying, first leg
1 – FC Utrecht (HOL) ——— Mertens 35′
0 – FC Lucerne (SWITZ)
Little Belgian left wing DRIES MERTENS managed the only goal of the game ten minutes before the halftime break as FC UTRECHT defeated FC LUCERNE with a minimum scoreline in what was described as a bad-tempered and rough affair in the UEFA Europa League’s third round.
For Mertens, who later had a notorious second-half meeting with the elbow of FC Lucerne’s black mask-wearing, would-be unpunished Serbian defender DUSAN VESKOVIC, the goal was his second in three UEFA Europa League matches for FC Utrecht this campaign.
35-year-old Morocco international KHALID SINOUH made his third consecutive start and collected his second clean sheet in Europe thus far this season between the sticks for FC Utrecht.
