Ajax Amsterdam (Holland)

(Cynthia Boll/AP) — Uruguay’s 23-year-old World Cup striker LUIS SUAREZ (16) of Ajax Amsterdam is chased by 35-year-old Slovakia international defender JOZEF VALACHOVIC of Slovan Bratislava during a UEFA Europa League match at the Amsterdam Arena last August.

Last season, Suarez finished as top-scorer in the Eredivisie with 35 goals in 34 Eredivisie games and added another six in nine European contests for Ajax Amsterdam while walking off with the award for Dutch Footballer of the Year for 2009-10.

FC AJAX AMSTERDAM are, historically, not just one of the most successful clubs in the Netherlands but, indeed, all the world.

Six years after the failure of Football Club Ajax, a second attempt was launched with Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax in March of 1900. Since then Ajax Amsterdam have accumulated 29 Dutch First Division championships and won the KNVB Cup 18 times, as well.

Significantly, Ajax Amsterdam are one of only three clubs — FC Juventus Turin of Italy and FC Bayern Munich of Germany being the other two — to have won all three major European trophies : the European Champions’ Cup, the old Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Cup.

Ajax also have a long-standing reputation for the ability to develop young players which will, hopefully, serve MARTIN JOL well as the ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager has 17 players under the age of twenty-three in his 26-man squad at the moment.

Two participants from the recently-completed World Cup in South Africa, Denmark midfielder DENNIS ROMMEDAHL and Serbia striker MARKO PANTELIC, have moved on. The veteran Rommedahl is off to play for Olympiakos Piraeus in Greece. Pantelic, meanwhile, could not come to terms with Ajax Amsterdam officials on a new contract.

Pantelic, second on the Amsterdam club with 16 goals in the Eredivisie last season, sought a multi-year deal and rejected Ajax’s one-year offer.

The transfer of Egypt international MIDO (51 caps, 19 goals) to Ajax Amsterdam has apparently fallen apart now that relegated English club FC Middlesborough have decided on the need to collect a fee for the 27-year-old striker.

Ajax Amsterdam have acquired Morocco international striker MOUNIR EL HAMDAOUI from AZ 67 Alkmaar for a reported 5.0 million Euros; the 26-year-old attacker led the Dutch Eredivisie with 23 goals as AZ 67 Alkmaar took the league championship two seasons ago.

El Hamdoui was on the books at Tottenham Hotspur in England during Jol’s tenure for eighteen months after arriving in January of 2005 but never made a first team appearance for Spurs and spent a good chunk of time out on loan with Derby County in the second division.
