FC Liverpool have announced the signing of England World Cup winger JOE COLE on a free transfer from FC Chelsea and, in doing so, have sent a clear signal that, despite the club’s present financial difficulties, the team still intend to seriously compete for trophies in both England and Europe this season.

The 28-year-old English international inked a four year deal worth a reported 18.7 million English pounds with the Reds at Anfield and, in all reality, replaces YOSSI BENAYOUN, the Israeli international who headed in the exact opposite direction and joined Chelsea at Stamford Bridge earlier this summer.

The arrival of the wide man Cole, who has won 56 caps (10 goals) for England, is also expected to have a strong influence on the rest of the Red’s off-season transactions the remainder of this summer.

The club’s apparent commitment to fielding a strong side for new manager ROY HODGSON may have an effect on other top-notch Liverpool players — England’s STEPHEN GERRARD, Spain’s FERNANDO TORRES, Argentina’s JAVIER MASCHERANO — who are said to be thinking of leaving Anfield for, allegedly, greener pastures.
