A traditional domestic power with a proud traditional and history, the club’s last league title actually was achieved back in 2003.

This season, however, FC MACCABI TEL AVIV are qualified for the potentially-lucrative UEFA Europa League, a new competition in its second season replacing the old UEFA Cup, and ready for another shot, albeit a long one, at some additional silverware for the trophy cabinet.

Recognized as the record champion of Israeli with 20 league titles to its credit, for the new season Maccabi Tel Avi have signed five Israel internationals and three more foreign internationals; in all, ten new players have arrived in town to help track the big European money on offer to the club in this new season.

The high-profile departure is that of 19-year-old Zambia international striker EMMANUEL MAYUKA, who, after 10 goals in 42 league apperances for Maccabi Tel Aviv, was sold to SC Young Boys Bern of Switzerland for a reported $ 1.7 million US dollars.

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s lone participating representative at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, midfielder ANDREJ KOMAC of Slovenia, has moved on, as well, after being released.

The club certainly have moved to strengthen the side as a whole. Maccabi Tel Aviv spent $ 2.0 million US dollars on Israel international striker BARAK YITZHAKI and a further $ 1.2 million US on former Israel U-19 international forward ELIRAN ATAR. Also, returning after three seasons in Germany with Borussia Moenchengladbach, is Argentinian-born Israel international attacker ROBERTO COLAUTTI on a free transfer.

Maccabi Tel Aviv completely turned over the contingent of allotted foreign staff with a pair of ex-French Ligue 1 players as well as a pair from Spanish outfit Real Valladolid.

Of the four coming in from the two high-profile European leagues, the priciest player is Bosnia / Herzegovina international HARIS MEDUNJANIN at 800,000 Euros while Mali international DJIBRIL SIDIBE cost just 150,000 Euros. Both the Brazilian NIVALDO and Cameroon international ALBERT BANING arrive on free transfers.

Maccabi Tel Aviv have also brought in a trio of fairly-experienced Israel international defenders, two of whom are returning from the Jupiler League in Belgium.

Even the coach, long-time for Beitar Jerusalem man and Israel international goalkeeper, YOSSI MIZRAHI, is new at Maccabi Tel Aviv this year.

The 22-time winner of the Israel State Cup will enter the UEFA Europa League for the 2010-11 season in the second round against FK MOGREN of MONTENEGRO.
