2010 World Cup : Golden Boot To Germany’s Mueller

Meet the New Bomber, same as Old Bomber. Forty years on then, another footballer named MUELLER wearing the # 13 shirt for GERMANY at the World Cup has won the prestigous GOLDEN BOOT as top goal-scorer at the 2010 tournament just completed in South Africa. (Jamie McDonald/Getty Images Europe)

The winner of the prestigous GOLDEN BOOT trophy, given to the player who scores the most goals at the WORLD CUP final tournament, has been awarded to Germany’s THOMAS MUELLER of Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old attacker, who, even now, has only participated in eight international football matches, actually finished level on five goals with three other players.

DIEGO FORLAN of Spanish club Atletico Madrid found the net in the 3rd Place Match for Uruguay but both Spanish forward DAVID VILLA of CF Valencia and Dutch midfielder WESLEY SNEIJDER of Italian Champions’ League champion Inter Milan failed in their individual efforts to find a sixth goal in South Africa during the 2010 World Cup Final.

Mueller was awarded the Golden Boot on the basis of having accumulated more assists than the others :

5 goals, 3 assists — Thomas MUELLER — Germany
5 goals, 1 assists — David VILLA — Spain
5 goals, 1 assists — Wesley SNEIJDER — Holland
5 goals, 1 assists — Diego FORLAN — Uruguay

One can only speculate as to whether the tie-breaker for the Golden Boot would have been necessary had Mueller not been suspended and unable to play for Germany against Spain in the semi-final.
