Toni Schumacher’s Infamous Tackle

========================================================
Goalkeeper HARALD ANTON “Toni” SCHUMACHER was selected from 1.FC Koeln to guard the West German goal 76 times and, in addition to a European Championships crown in 1980, appeared in the Final of two World Cups over the course of his accomplished international career. (lequipemag.fr photo)

It can be rather difficult to understand, if one has, in fact, never stood between the sticks.

What it is like, for example, to intentionally put your face directly in front of the swinging boot of a determined striker trying to score.

Of course, there is the actual goal itself — unless one has, indeed, been in front of such, it can be truly hard to comprehend exactly how huge the cage really is.

Now, things happen fast out there, particularly at the pinnacle that is the World Cup final tournament.

And, it is a fact that French midfielder PATRICK BATTISTON of AS St. Etienne was threatening the West German goal…

…so there will be no sympathy forthcoming here — ever.
