It is official and it comes as a bit of a surprise.

The popular point of view had it that only one of Europe’s bigger clubs, say an AC Milan of Italy, would have the necessary cash to collect the signature of a player of such experience and class.

But, to the surprise of many, veteran German international midfielder MICHAEL BALLACK, released earlier this summer by English Premier League champions FC Chelsea, has inked a two-year deal to return home and have at it in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen.

Ballack reportedly will earn $ 14.7 million US dollars in salary over the next two season.

“I would never have thought that he would sacrifice so much money, and I told him this,” stated Bayer Leverkusen coach JUPP HEYNCKES.

“It is incredible that such a fantastic player is now back in Leverkusen. Michael is going to be the attraction of the league. He will give us dominance in midfield, a goal-scoring threat from free kicks and the youngsters can learn a great deal from him.”

Ballack spent three Bundesliga campaigns with Bayer Leverkusen previously before a big-money move to Bayern Munich following the 2002 World Cup in Asia. Leverkusen had originally bought Ballack for 4.1 million Euros from 1.FC Kasierlautern in the summer of 1999 before off-loading the German international for a healthy 12.9 million Euros and a tidy profit.

The 33-year-old midfielder has been in England with Premier League powerhouse Chelsea the past four years :
