Chile Handle Honduras; First Win In Half Century

Certainly, one of the finest saves thus far at the 2010 World Cup finals from the unheralded 33-year-old veteran Valladares then in the Group H match of Spanish-speaking nations, Chile and Honduras. (Michael Sohn/AP)

The 1-0 victory over Honduras at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, South Africa, marked the first win at a World Cup finals match for Chile since June 10, 1962, as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was defeated at the quarterfinal stage.

As luck would have it, the final tournament was hosted that year by Chile.

Chile did qualify for the World Cup finals in 1966, 1974, 1982 and 1998 but were unable to record a victory in thirteen games played, posting a record of seven losses and six ties.
