40th Anniversary of Ibrox Disaster

========================================================

It was not a good way to start the New Year in Glasgow, or anywhere else in the football world, back on January 2, 1971.

Over 100,000 had piled into Ibrox Stadium on the south bank of the River Clyde for an Old Firm Derby between Rangers and fierce, cross-town arch-rivals Celtic. The visitors had scored a late goal in the 89th minute to snap a scoreless deadlock and thousands of spectators had already begun to leave via Stairway 13 at the Copland Road end of the arena. Then, a tragedy caused by a massive pile-up of people in that stairwell ensued.

66 people, including many school-aged children, were crushed to death and an excess of another 200 people were injured, as well.

Rangers actually scored in the dying moments to level the match that day.

Much initial speculation had it that fans leaving the stadium early turned around in a rush of excitement at Rangers’ equalizer and had come up against still more spectators exiting via Stairway 13.

The official inquiry into the Ibrox Disaster later proved there was no merit to this theory. All the people were found to have been moving in the same direction. It appears that someone, perhaps a child on the shoulders of a parent, fell in the stairwell and sparked a most unfortunate chain reaction.

Period Of Applause For Rangers’ Avi Cohen

==============================================
Although the Israel international had just one season at Ibrox, defender AVI COHEN did come on as a substitute for Rangers and earn a winner’s medal from the highly-entertaining 1987 Scottish League Cup Final with FC Aberdeen, a 3-3 draw which was, after extra time, decided on penalty kicks at Hampden Park in Glasgow. (news.stv.tv)
==============================================

Before getting to one of it’s most-favored derby matches with the mandatory report, the blog pauses ahead of Glasgow’s Old Firm clash between CELTIC and RANGERS to pay some respects to the late Israel international defender AVI COHEN.

Cohen, who spent the 1987-88 campaign at Ibrox having been signed by the player-manager of the Rangers, three-time Scotland World Cup midfielder GRAEME SOUNESS. Several years earlier, the two had been teammates with powerful FC Liverpool in England, the 1981 European Cup champions. Cohen, of course, tragically passed away earlier this week as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident only a few days before Christmas.

A good player but not great, the lasting impact of the former Liverpool and Rangers man is, nevertheless, all about today both in Great Britain and across the continent, as well. At the time Cohen transferred to the Reds from FC Maccabi Tel Aviv at the end of the decade, only a few Israel internationals had signed with European professional clubs through the whole of the 1970s. In part thanks to Cohen’s success at Liverpool, albeit it limited, other foreign clubs began to seriously consider Israeli footballers.

========================================================
Midfielder EYAL BERKOVIC appeared in 28 matches and scored nine goals during the 1999-2000 Scottish Premier League campaign for Celtic following a pricey transfer from East London club West Ham United in England; the Israel international was not preferred by new manager Martin O’Neill to start the following season and, after just four league games and one goal, went out on loan at English Premier League club Blackburn Rovers to finish the 2000-01 schedule. (www.sporting-heroes.net)
========================================================

A noticeable sign of improvement for Israel football, by the late 1980s, three top national team strikers were all collecting paychecks in the Belgian First Division. RONNY ROSENTHAL, who would later succeed Cohen with Liverpool and score vital goals for the Reds’ 1990 title-winning team, had been taken on board by Club Bruges in 1986 then sold for profit to Standard Liege. ELI OHANA had three productive campaigns with KV Mechelen before a transfer to Sporting Braga in Portugal while SHALOM TIKVA enjoyed three solid seasons with Standard Liege before a lucrative move to French Ligue 1 side RC Lens.

Israel international BONNI GINZBURG followed Cohen to Glasgow and had a pair of seasons as the number two goalkeeper for Rangers behind England’s two-time World Cup reserve CHRIS WOODS to usher in the new decade.

Ten years later, Celtic splashed out 5.75 million English pounds to sign talented midfielder EYAL BERKOVIC from East London club West Ham United; the Hammers, who had bought Berkovic from FC Southampton two years earlier, turned a tidy profit of over four million English pounds with the sale of the Israel international.

(David Moir/Reuters)
========================================================

This past summer, Celtic paid FC Maccabi Haifa 1.8 million English pounds for Israel international BIRAM KAYAL. Only three players bought by all Scottish Premier League teams this summer cost more than the 22-year-old midfielder. Kayal had seven appearances, including five starts, in all competitions to open the new campaign for Celtic but was knocked out by injury at the end of September.

Back to full fitness, Kayal returned as a substitute on Boxing Day against St. Johnstone and appeared again off the bench for the Hoops opposite visiting Motherwell at Parkhead on December 29.

To begin the New Year, Kayal made his first-ever apperance in the Old Firm Derby with a start for Celtic against fierce intra-city, arch-rival Rangers at Ibrox Stadium.

This is the legacy of the Israel national team captain and hero Avi Cohen.

Celtic v Rangers on Sunday

========================================================

Glasgow clubs CELTIC and RANGERS will renew their intense, intra-city rivalry for the 390th time with the Scottish Premier League clash scheduled Sunday at Ibrox Stadium.

Celtic are actually one point ahead of Rangers in the standings for the Scottish top flight at the moment although it must be noted that that The Bhoys have played two more league matches than their dreaded cross-town nemesis.

Celtic have also just completed the signing of international winger FREDDIE LJUNGBERG on a free transfer from the Major League Soccer outfit Chicago Fire in the United States.

Ljungberg has earned 75 caps, scored 15 goals and appeared at two FIFA World Cup final tournaments for Sweden before retiring from international play in 2008; the 33-year-old spent ten years in London, nine with FC Arsenal and another with West Ham United, playing in the Premiership before departing for the fledling MLS franchise Seattle Sounders in the fall of 2008.

In the previous Old Firm Derby contested this campaign on October 24 at Parkhead, a hat trick from Scotland international striker KENNY SMITH, who has scored 21 goals in 16 Scottish Premier League games this season, carried Rangers to a 3-1 triumph over Celtic.

Glasgow clubs CELTIC and RANGERS will renew their intense, intra-city rivalry for the 389th time in the Scottish Premier League on Sunday at Parkhead.

Rangers come into the match having won all eight games in the SPL to start the 2010-11 season and have not lost in a dozen matches involving any competition this campaign.

This, of course, means nothing to Celtic, who also have a 100% record after the first eight rounds of league football this term, in the Old Firm Derby.

Van Wolfswinkel completed his hat trick and put FC Utrecht ahead on aggregate for good in the first minute of the second half following a feed from French forward EDOUARD DUPLAN, a recent signing from Sparta Rotterdam, on the heels of approach work from Ghana international midfielder NANA ASARE.
