The newcomers would include a trio of crack West German professionals as well as three other players who had appeared at the 1974 FIFA World Cup final tournament hosted by West Germany. Well-traveled domestically having played in 445 matches (scoring 22 goals) for five different clubs over the course of 19 seasons in the Dutch first division, Advocaat was never capped in his career by the Netherlands.

Striker JIM CORSI was just 17 years old when he made his professional soccer debut and drew an assist in his only match of the 1971 North American Soccer League season for the Montreal Olympique. Two years later, the Montreal native made four more appearances for his hometown club and would score what proved to be the only goal of his brief NASL career. By the time the 1976 Summer Olympic Games had come to the iconic French-Canadian city of Montreal, the versatile Corsi was preparing to sign his first professional contract to play ice hockey for the Quebec Nordiques in the World Hockey Association.

Eight years later, at the 1984 Winter Olympic Games hosted by Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, the one-time NASL striker found himself at the center of a historic controversy revolving around the age-old ‘amateur versus professional’ question. The 29-year-old Corsi was, by now, the first-string netminder for the national team of Italy but appeared to be ineligible for the Olympics on the basis of his prior service with the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League. However, in the wake of a protest formally filed by Finland, the International Olympic Committee issued a most curious and clearly inequitable ruling which would allow Corsi to go ahead and compete for Italy in Sarajevo, anyway.

Muehlmann hatte 26 von 30 Spiele zwischen den Stoecken mit Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen waehrend der erste Bundesligasaison von 1963/64. WILLI SCHULZ, 66 A-Laenderspiele und fuer Bundesrepublik Deutschland an dem 1966 FIFA Weltmeisterschaft gespielt hat, hervorragender Verteidiger mit der Koenigsblauen jetzt war. Aber dann Muehlmann hat seinen Torhueterplatz verloren, zuerst zu dem jugoslawischen GYULA TOTH und dann zum JOSEF ELTING. Er hat nur sechzehnmal in den letzten zwei Jahre mit der ersten Mannschaft erschienen. 1966 ist damals an die SC Bonner in der zweitklassigen Regionalliga West, der 26 Jahr alte Torhueter.

Am Sommer von 1968, kam Muehlmann nach Amerika und unterzeichnete einen Vertrag mit der Kansas City Spurs der North American Soccer League. Aber noch wieder, der deutsche Torhueter sitzt auf der Bank viel oft. Muehlmann spielt nur ein Mal alle Saison in der NASL.

Aber dieser Zeit in der Geschichte, American Football League und National Football League Mannschaften Hilfe brauchen. Ein “Field Goal” ist schwierig zu machen, weil weinige das Ball immer genau steuren koennen. Niemand koennen auch das Ball sehr weit mit dem Fuss schicken. Und die zwei ungarischen Brueder, Charlie and Pete Gogolak, hatten bereits die Weise gezeigt — es war “soccer-style” benannt und jede amerikanischefussball Mannschaft moechte ein andere Gogolak zu haben.

Am Sommer von 1969, Muehlmann hat eine Probe mit der Cincinnati Bengals der American Football League und einen Vertrag bekommt. Die frueher Bundesliga Fussballspieler ist einer der besten Kicker in der AFL sofort fuer die Bengals, die nicht schlecht sind. In dem naechsten Jahr kommen die zwei AFL und NFL Ligen zusammen, aber alles ist das selbe fuer Muehlmann.

Muehlmann ist eine echte Waffe fuer den Angriff der Cincinnati Bengals, weil er sehr genau ist und von weit treten koennen. Er hat ein Rekord gemacht, dass lebt doch noch heute in der National Football League. Muehlmann hat mindestens ein Field Goal aus ueber 50 Yards in drei aufeinanderfolgenden Spielen gemacht.

In the end, not including host nation Canada, nine participants — eight players and one trainer — at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games later returned to the same continent in order to sign with professional North American Soccer League clubs at some point. Half of the players came from the silver medal squad of Poland and, with one exception, would experience the ice hockey-like Major Indoor Soccer League. The first two players arriving, as matters worked out, originated from the Middle Eastern countries of Iran and Israel while most of this group, with the notable exception of Mexico’s HUGO SANCHEZ, were already well past their footballing prime.

The arrival of West Germany’s regining World Cup champion FRANZ BECKENBAUER of powerhouse Bayern Munich – winners of the prestigous European Cup of Champions three consecutive seasons now – was still a year away as was the significant relocation across the Hudson River to newly-constructed Giants Stadium in New Jersey. The all-time record for average attendance per match (47,856) was still two years down the road, as well, and the memorable string of North American Soccer League championships had yet to be procured. Nevertheless, the Soccer Revolution was already well underway during the Bicentennial in the Big Apple as three-time World Cup-winning megastar PELE of Brazil was back in town for a second season with the emerging New York Cosmos.

The incomparable Pele shot five goals in nine games to finish the 1975 NASL campaign after coming out of retirement to sign a lucrative deal with entertainment giant Warner Brothers, the owners of the New York Cosmos, paying the lucrative amount of $ 1.4 million dollars annually. As was specifically mandated in the Brazilian’s contract, the Cosmos moved decisively to strengthen the team around Pele and the entire playing staff was given a major overhaul in the off-season. Italy World Cup striker GIORGIO CHINAGLIA, the 1974 Serie A scoring king still just 29 years old, was lured away from SS Lazio of Rome with a contract for a reported $ 840,000 over three years while Peru’s 1970 World Cup midfielder RAMON MIFFLIN was recruited from Pele’s old outfit in Brazil, FC Santos.

The veteran player-coach GORDON BRADLEY, who had served in that capacity for New York City’s NASL team since the club’s inception in 1971, was given a front office job and replaced by a countryman with plenty of experience in English professional football. Former FC Watford and Blackburn Rovers boss KEN FURPHY had been sacked by First Division side Sheffield United in October of 1975 but was seen by the Cosmos as the right man to take charge of the side with the world’s most famous footballer. A wave of British signings, highlighted by three players from Sheffield United and also including Northern Ireland international midfielder DAVE CLEMENTS of FC Everton as well as seasoned Aston Villa defender CHARLIE AITKEN, who earned a solitary cap for Scotland over his long career, immediately ensued.

The New York Cosmos also purchased two standout American players from the Philadelphia Atoms for a fee of $ 100,000. Both had helped the side from the City of Brotherly Love to the NASL crown in 1973. Goalkeeper BOB RIGBY, an All-American at tiny East Stroudsburg State College in northeastern Pennsylvania, was a big acquisition for a Cosmos team looking to better 1975′s mark of 10 wins and 12 losses and looking to make the playoffs for the first time since having captured their one and only title to date in 1972.

Despite all the improvements to the roster, the New York Cosmos did not start the 1976 season firing on all cylinders. There was dissension in the ranks, as not all were impressed with Furphy’s tactics and strategies. Pele was being deployed in midfield and, reportedly, unhappy that fellow Brazilian NELSI MORAIS, who had been signed by the Cosmos from FC Santos on his recommendation, was underutilized by the English manager in the middle of the park. Chinaglia, who forged a strong personal relationship with Cosmos financial kingpin STEVE ROSS, was publically critcal of what he labeled a “third division English mentality.”

The Cosmos, who by now had moved into baseball’s legendary Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, were doing better at the gate with international stars such as Chinaglia and Pele now scoring the goals. New York would nearly double its attendance from the previous season with an average of 18,477 spectators per contest even if the real eye-popping numbers at the box office were still down the road. And the team had still yet to attain its elite status in the NASL, as evidenced by the early-season 5-1 rout at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rowdies.

Expectations were not being met and, to make matters worse, Rigby was put out of action thru injury in the unlucky thirteenth game of the year. With the all the money invested but the New York Cosmos just plodding along with the only slightly-improved mark of eight wins and six losses, it did not take long for patience at the top to wear thin. And so, Furphy was fired having lasted only a little more than halfway through the tumultuous 1976 NASL campaign.

Weltmeister FRANZ BECKENBAUER ist zurueck nach Deutschland zu SV Hamburg gegangen, aber der NEW YORK COSMOS hat noch vielen Superstar Spieler. Und der beruehmte deutsche Trainer HENNES WEISWEILER moechte eine zweite NASL Meisterschaft in da vielen Jahreszeit seit Verlassen von 1.FC Koeln gewinnen. Der leistungsfaehig New York Cosmos hat bereits drei der letzte vier NASL Meisterschaften gewonnen.

New York hat fuenf Spieler mit Weltmeisterschaft Erfahrung in der Startelf. VLADISLAV BOGIECEVIC und IVAN BULJAN, der ehemalige SV Hamburg Verteidiger, erschienen mit Jugoslawien an den 1974 Weltmeisterschaft in Deutschland. Und WIM RIJSBERGEN und JOHAN NEESKENS hat mit den Niederlanden an den letzten zwei Weltmeisterschaften in 1974 und 1978 gespielt.

Der Chicago Sting konnte nicht von solchem Weltklassetalent sprechen. Der Trainer des Sting, WILLY ROY, war in Deutschland geboren aber ging nach Amerika wann er war jung und spaeter Laenderspieler mit United States war. Chicago hat fuenf Profispieler aus Deutschland, aber mit diesem die Bundesliga Erfahrung war nicht so gross.
