A goalless draw in the final game of the stage with visiting Ukranian side FC METALIST KHARKIV was more than enough for Dutch club PSV EINDHOVEN to clinch first in Group I of the UEFA Europa League.

One-time Brazil U-20 international goalkeeper CASSIO RAMOS, who has been on the books at PSV the past four seasons but has appeared in exactly two Dutch Eredivisie games for Eindhoven thus far in his career, got the start between the sticks in place of Sweden international ANDREAS ISAKSSON and stopped six shots to keep the sheet clean for the home side.

With the club already qualified for the knockout round of 32 for this coming spring, PSV Eindhoven manager FRED RUTTEN also used to occasion to give a senior debut to 20-year-old fullback ABEL TAMATA.

A goal in the final minute capped a second half comeback as visting Dutch club PSV EINDHOVEN clipped hosting Serie A side SAMPDORIA GENOA 2-1 in Group I of the UEFA Europa League.

Struggling with goal-scoring and in desperate need of points at the group stage in Europe, Sampdoria gathered its mettle at the start and were unfortunate to have Italy U-21 international striker GUIDO MARILUNGO, on loan with Serie B side US Leece all last year, hit the outside of the post early on.

Later in the first half, play was halted for a few minutes after a power outage at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris; this did not seem to hamper Sampdoria, however, who took the lead in injury time of the first half when in-form Italy World Cup striker GIAMPAOLO PAZZINI, the Genoa club’s leading goal-scorer, headed home the cross of Switzerland World Cup fullback RETO ZIEGLER in fine fashion.

========================================================

Against the run of play, PSV Eindhoven stung Sampdoria with an equalizer six mintues into the second half. Sweden international attacker OLA TOIVONEN leveled terms with a header of his own from a ball played into the box by Holland World Cup reserve midfielder IBRAHIM AFELLAY. The goal shook Sampdoria and its supporters, both of whom knew a draw would make the Genoa club dependent upon other results in Group I in order to advance in the UEFA Europa League.

Soon, all were aware that FC Metalist Kharkiv had gone to the lead in the other game against VSC Debrecen — this meant that Sampdoria now needed to win their match with PSV Eindhoven, with whom they had played to a 1-1 tie earlier towards the end of September.

Home side fans found their hearts in their throats when the shot of PSV Eindhoven’s Hungary international winger BALAZS DZSUDZSAK, who leads the Dutch side with five goals in Europe this season, squeezed through Sampdoria’s angle-cutting keeper GIANLUCA CURCI and rolled towards to the unguarded goal; the former Italy U-21 international goalkeeper was able to recover and arrest the ball right on the line.

The reprieve was temporary and, with time dwindling, Marilungo was dismissed after throwing a temper tantrum.

In the final minute of regulation time, Toivonen freed fellow Sweden international MARCUS BERG in the box. The striker on loan from SV Hamburg had his shot saved by Curci but the Sampdoria defender overran the rebound, allowing Berg’s countryman to pounce. Toivonen quickly capitalized for his second goal of the game and third in seven European matches this season.

The result guarantees PSV Eindhoven, the current leaders of Group I on 13 points, football in Europe this spring while Sampdoria, with just five points and only one match remaining in the brackett, have been bounced from the UEFA Europa League.

0 – VSC Debrecen (HUN)

A pair of first half goals provided the foundation as PSV EINDHOVEN cruised comfortably to a 3-0 victory over visting Hungarian club VSC Debrecen in Group I of the UEFA Europa League.

Holland World Cup reserve midfielder IBRAHIM AFELLAY sent PSV Eindhoven to the lead in the 21st minute after a nifty backheel from Hungary international winger BALAZS DZSUDZSAK, the Dutch Eredivisie club’s leading goal-scorer in Europe this term who transferred to the Rood-witten from VSC Debrecen in January of 2008.

The 24-year-old PSV Eindhoven club captain strode forward and blasted a low drive from beyond the penalty arc inside the right post for his first goal in Europe and sixth in all competitions this season.

Sweden international midfielder OLA TOIVONEN, who leads PSV Eindhoven with eight goals in the Eredivisie, created the home side’s second just a couple of minutes before the halftime whistle; the 24-year-old, who cost 4.5 million Euros according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf when signed from FF Malmo in January of 2009, capped off a quick counter attack with a smooth pass for Brazilian striker JONATHAN REIS.

The rejuvenated Reis, who was expelled from PSV Eindhoven last season after testing positive for a banned substance, then calmly slotted the ball past advancing Lithuania international goalkeeper MINDAUGAS MALINAUSKAS of VSC Debrecen.

Thus, a second strike against the Hungarian side in as many UEFA Europe League matches for the 21-year-old in-form striker, who has emerged from the end of the bench to score seven goals his first four matches in the Eredivisie for PSV Eindhoven this term.

Belgian substitute STIJN WUYTENS, on his very first appearance of the season for the Boeren in this, PSV Eindhoven’s 19th match in all competitions, capped the scoring two minutes from time with a splendid touch to control a bouncing ball from Toivonen and make space for a rising rocket.

PSV Eindhoven’s third victory on the trot in the UEFA Europa League leaves the Dutch side at the top of Group I with ten points, three clear of Ukrainian outfit FC Metalist Kharkiv and five out in front of Italian Serie A side Sampdoria Genoa; VSC Debrecen have been eliminated from the knockout round after a fourth consecutive defeat.

PSV Eindhoven Pump Ten Past Proud Feyenoord Rotterdam

=====================================================

That deafening thump-like sound enanating from the Netherlands was the natural by-product of a ten-goal thrashing which was laid on one of the country’s Big Three in the Dutch Eredivisie today.

Certainly, PSV EINHOVEN’s record 10-0 rout of FEYENOORD ROTTERDAM was noticed by football followers throughout the world.

After all, this is the very same Feyenoord Rotterdam who have captured 14 Dutch First Division championships and 11 KNVB Cups in addition to the 1970 European Cup and two UEFA Cups (1974, 2002).

The pummeling by PSV at the Philips Stadion today eclipses the Feyenoord club record for heaviest defeat. The previous worst for the Rotterdam club was the 8-2 loss to Ajax Amsterdam, another member of the so-called Big Three, in September of 1983. Ironically enough, the current manager of Feyenoord Rotterdam, MARIO BEEN, was a young midfielder for the club at the time of the Ajax disaster.

“It’s hard to realize what happened,” stated Feyenoord Rotterdam’s 31-year-old Holland international defender TIM DE CLER. “After the first goal and the red card (to Feyenoord Rotterdam midfielder KELVIN LEERDAM in the 34th minute)…we totally collapsed.”

========================================

As for PSV Eindhoven, the other member of the Big Three who has, among other things, the 1988 European Cup title to its credit, the ten-goal victory matches the club record which was reached before on two previous occasions — against Go Ahead Eagles Deventer in 1973 and again versus FC Volendam in 1998.

Brazilian striker JONATHAN REIS, back on the PSV Eindhoven payroll after being thrown off the team at the end of January last season, led the way for the Rood-witten by scoring a hat trick inside the first hour against Feyenoord Rotterdam; the 21-year-old forward, who scored the game-winning goal for PSV Eindhoven against Hungarian side VSC Debrecen in the UEFA Europa League this week, pushed his Eredivisie total this season to an impressive six goals from only three games.

Hungary international winger BALAZS DZSUDZSAK and Surinam international striker JEREMAIN LENS added two second half goals apiece while Holland international midfielders IBRAHIM AFELLAY and ORLANDO ENGELAAR as well as Sweden international attacking midfielder OLA TOIVONEN piled on strikes for PSV Eindhoven, too.

Toivionen leads PSV Eindhoven, the current leaders of the Dutch top flight after ten rounds, with eight goals in Eredivisie play.

2 – PSV Eindhoven (HOL) ————- Engelaar 40′, Reis 66′

A goal on each side of the halftime whistle enabled visiting Dutch side PSV EINDHOVEN to achieve a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over VSC Debrecen and take control of Group I in the UEFA Europa League.

The home team took the lead ten minutes before halftime when club captain PETER CZVITKOVICS’ free kick was not cleared properly by PSV Eindhoven’s Brazilian defender MARCELO and VSC Debrecen’s Macedonian central defender MIRSAD MIJADINOSKI was on hand to sweep the ball into the net from close range in front.

The visitors struck back within the next five minutes, however. Sweden international striker MARCUS BERG started the move by playing a handsome back heel ball for Holland international ORLANDO ENGELAAR to run onto. The 31-year old midfielder, who signed for the Boeren in the summer of 2009 after a season in Germany with Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen, beat a defender with a deft touch and cooly clipped the ball over advancing VSC Debrecen’s Lithuania international goalkeeper MINDAUGAS MALINAUSKAS to equalize for PSV Eindhoven.

========================================================

The 1988 European Cup champion, who enjoyed a 14-6 edge in shots-at-goal for the game, really began to apply pressure in the second half and only three saves from Malinauskas, including a full-stretch stop from one-time VSC Debrecen-turned-PSV Eindhoven winger BALAZS DZSUDZSAK kept the score level.

PSV Eindhoven, unbeaten with two wins after three rounds in Group I of the UEFA Europa League, went ahead for good in the 66th minute when veteran Holland international defender WILFRED BOUMA, the off-season arrival from English Premier League club Aston Villa, floated a long ball from the left that Brazilian striker JONATHAN REIS managed to get the slightest of touches with the back of his head and steer into the far corner for what proved to be the match decider.

A sweet result then for Reis, the second half substitute who was kicked off the PSV Eindhoven squad and had his contract canceled after testing positive for a banned substance then refusing the club’s offer to help with drug addiction treatment late last January; the 21-year-old striker was given a second chance by the Dutch club and signed a new contract with the Rood-witten this summer.

2 – PSV Eindhoven (HOL) ———— Dzsudzsak pen 27′, Berg 30′

With both sides forced to endure heavy rains, two goals and an expulsion inside the first half hour was enough for visiting Dutch club PSV EINDHOVEN to inflict a 2-0 defeat on host FC METALIST KHARKIV in Group I of the UEFA Europa League.

Metalist Kharkiv’s Argentina international defender CRISTIAN VILLAGRA was shown the straight red card in the 26th minute after taking down Sweden international attacker OLA TOIVONEN inside the penalty area; Hungary international winger BALAZS DZSUDZSAK dispatched the resulting spot kick for his fourth goal in Europe this term and a 1-0 PSV Eindhoven lead.

Within three minutes, PSV Eindhoven doubled their advantage when the precision pass of ERIK PIETERS allowed Sweden international striker MARCUS BERG to shoot past Metalist Kharkiv’s Serbia international goalkeeper VLADIMIR DISLJENOVIC.

Matters might have been even worse in the first half had the shot of Toivonen not struck the crossbar.

From there on out, the visitiors were content for the most part to defend and limited Metalist Kharkiv to a scant five shots at goal for the game – Sweden international goalkeeper ANDREAS ISAKSSON needed to make just two saves in the match for PSV Eindhoven.

=================================================

PSV EINDHOVEN are one of the most successful sides in the proud history of professional football in Holland.

Philips Sport Vereniging (Philips Sports Union), who started out as the employees’ team for Gerard Philips’ electronics company in 1913, have won the Dutch Eredivisie championship 21 times and have captured the KNVB Cup on eight occasions, as well.

PSV Eindhoven, who defeated Portuguese powerhouse Benfica Lisbon on penalty kicks after a goalless draw in the 1988 Final, are one of three Dutch clubs to have won the prestigous European Cup of Champions, which is now, of course, the UEFA Champions League.

PSV Eindhoven also won the old UEFA Cup at the conclusion of the 1977-78 season.

This year, PSV Eindhoven has made a clear effort to reduce the average age of the playing staff under the direction of manager FRED RUTTEN — seven players 28 or older have moved on in the off-season while six of the nine new players for the 2010-11 campaign are 23 or younger.

PSV sold 30-year-old Mexico World Cup defender CARLOS SALCIDO, who played every minute for his country in South Africa this summer, to English Premier League club Fulham Athletic for a reported 1.6 million English pounds while 36-year-old Holland World Cup defender ANDRE OOIJER, who has since signed for Ajax Amsterdam, was released outright.

Highly experienced, 33-year-old Belgium international midfielder TIMMY SIMONS (74 caps, 3 goals) has departed for German Bundesliga side 1.FC Nuremberg.

(ANP photo)
==============================================

Sweden international striker MARCUS BERG has returned to the Dutch Eredivisie on loan for the season to PSV Eindhoven from German club SV Hamburg; the 24-year-old scored 32 goals in 56 league games for FC Groningen over two seasons before netting just four goals in 31 Bundesliga games last year for Hamburg.

PSV Eindhoven’s top league scorer returns in Hungary international striker BALAZS DZSUDZSAK, who scored a career-high 14 goals in 32 Eredivisie matches a year ago. The 23-year-old, now in his fourth year in Holland, is off that pace with just one goal in his first seven league games so far this season. Dzsudzsak does, however, have four goals in the UEFA Europa League for PSV this term.

Sweden international attacker OLA TOIVONEN, who finished second on PSV last season with 13 goals in 33 league games, also returns; the 24-year-old is midfielder / striker is off to a torrid start this year in the Dutch league with seven goals his first six Eredivise games for the Boeren.

A deserved goal in the final minute earned PSV EINDHOVEN a 1-1 draw and a share of the points with visiting Italian Serie A side SAMPDORIA GENOA in the opening round of Group I play for the UEFA Europa League.

PSV Eindhoven piled up a 16-1 advantage in shots at goal but were stifled by Sampdoria goalkeeper GIANLUCA CURCI, the off-season arrival from AC Siena who made eight saves in the match.

Sampdoria scored with that only attempt at goal, however, when defender FABRIZIO CACCIATORE headed home a cross from Hungary international midfielder VLADIMIR KOMAN in the 25th minute.

Holland World Cup reserve midfielder IBRAHIM AFELLAY rocked the Sampdoria goalpost in the 70th minute, but PSV Eindhoven would have to wait until the last sixty seconds of regulation time for Hungary international forward BALAZS DZSUDZSAK to collect a loose ball on the edge of the box and beat Curci for the equalizer.

PSV EINDHOVEN broke through for the goals it needed in the second half and ultimately swamped visiting Russian side SIBIR NOVOSIBIRSK 5-0 at the Philips Stadion in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League playoff round.

Sweden international striker MARCUS BERG, on loan to the Dutch club for the season from German Bundelsiga side SV Hamburg, leveled the tie for PSV with ten minutes remaining in the first half. Holland international midfielder and club captain ORLANDO ENGELAAR hammered a drive from the top of the arc in off the post a little over ten minutes into the second half to give Eindhoven the lead on aggregate. Another international striker of Sweden, OLA TOIVONEN, opened the floodgates with PSV’s third in the 64th minute.

Hungary international winger BALAZS DZSUDZSAK completed the rout by scoring PSV Eindhoven’s final two goals, the last coming from the penalty spot against beleaguered Sibir Novosibirsk goalkeeper ALEKSEI SOLOSIN.

Playoff round, first leg
8/19/2010

1 – Sibir Novosibirsk (RUS) ——— Degtyarev 90+2′
0 – PSV Eindhoven (HOL)

An injury time goal from substitute midfielder ALEKSANDR DEGTYAREV propelled FC SIBIR NOVOSIBIRSK, currently at the bottom of the table in the Russian Premier League, to a rousing victory over Dutch side PSV EINDHOVEN in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League playoff round.

PSV Eindhoven played more than half the match with ten men after Mexico World Cup defender FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ was shown the straight red card in the 39th minute for overreacting; the visitors were unfortunate when Sweden international striker OLA TOIVONEN hit the crossbar late in the second half.

In the second minute of injury time, PSV Eindhoven failed to clear a long ball played into the box from the right; MAKSIM ASTAFYEV collected the ball on the left and slid a ball into the path of the advancing Degtyarev.
