“Liverpool may have given children free tickets for the Europa League tie against Utrecht at Anfield but even they will have felt short-changed by the disappointing goalless draw…”

SPORTSMAIL REPORTER – Mail Online Football

Hey! — What is so bad about error-free goalkeeping, organized defense and a clean sheet?

Besides, the blog would have been thrilled just to be at Anfield on someone’s else’s dime…the blog has every confidence the children somehow managed to enjoy themselves in spite of the dearth of goals scored.

Having already qualified for the knockout round of 32 this spring, FC Liverpool manager ROY HODGSON did the right thing to send out the reserves for the Scousers’ final match at the group stage.

Australia international goalkeeper BRAD JONES, who had previously made just one start for the Reds in the Carling League Cup since signing from Middlesborough this summer, appeared in Europe for the first time since the 2005-06 season.

Holland international striker RICKY VAN WOLFSWINKEL, who leads FC Utrecht with 11 goals in 18 Eredivisie games this season, was taken off at halftime by visiting manager TON DU CHATINIER in favor of 19-year-old attacker LEON DE KOGEL; thus, the promising 21-year-old ends his 2010-11 European campaign with a record of eight goals from 12 UEFA Europa League matches.

For all the goals — to speak nothing of scoring chances — absolutely nothing was settled as visiting Serie A side SSC NAPOLI fought back from two goals down on the road to draw 3-3 with Dutch Eredivisie outfit FC UTRECHT in Group K of the UEFA Europa League.

21-year-old attacker RICKY VAN WOLFSWINKEL, who made his senior international debut for the Netherlands against Ukraine in August, struck for a brace while veteran striker FRANK DEMOUGE added a goal in the 35th minute to sent FC Utrecht up 3-1.

The emerging van Wolfswinkel, who scored seven goals in 31 league games last season after arriving from Vitesse Arnhem, leads FC Utrecht this term with both 11 goals in 17 Eredivisie matches as well as eight goals in 11 UEFA contests.

But Uruguay World Cup striker EDINSON CAVANI, Napoli’s leading scorer in Serie A with nine goals heading into the match in the Netherlands, completed his hat trick to bring the Italian club back for a share of the spoils; on loan from US Palermo, Cavani also tops Napoli with six goals in the UEFA Europa League this season.

Napoli might have snatched a late winner, but were unfortunate to have the point-blank header of 30-year-old veteran Brazilian defender EMILSON SANCHEZ CRIBARI, a purchase of 500,000 Euros from SS Lazio this summer, rebound off the base of the post in injury time.

The result leaves both FC Utrecht and SSC Napoli with four points after five games in Group K of the UEFA Europa League. In the final round of matches at this stage, Napoli will host Steaua Bucharest while FC Utrecht must travel to England and face FC Liverpool at Anfield. The former Romanian army club are currently occupying the critical second place on six points.

Two goals inside of sixty seconds within the opening ten minutes of the second half from Romania international striker BOGDAN STANCU sparked FC STEAUA BUCHAREST to a pivotal 3-1 defeat of visiting Dutch side FC UTRECHT in Group K of the UEFA Europa League.

Shortly before the half hour mark, controversy arrived when FC Utrecht’s Holland World Cup reserve goalkeeper MICHEL VORM carried the header of FC Steaua Bucharest defender FLORIN GARDOS over the goalline after a scramble in front following a corner kick.

The match referee, STANISLAV SUKHINA of Russia, awarded the goal and was proven by television replay to have made the correct call.

A late own goal a quarter hour from full time denied the hosts full points as FC UTRECHT tied visiting Romanian side FC STEAUA BUCHAREST 1-1 in Group K of the UEFA Europa League.

FC Utrecht, who put eight shots on target for the game as compared to just three for the one-time Romanian Army club who captured the 1986 European Cup title, might have taken the lead as early as the 26th minute but the fierce shot of 32-year-old veteran defender TIM CORNELISSE from the right flank crashed off the bar.

On the hour mark, FC Utrecht finally scored their first goal in 240 minutes of play at the group stage of the UEFA Champions League; after a scramble at the top of the penatly arc, the ball found itself on the foot of French winger EDOUARD DUPLAN and the mid-August arrival from Sparta Rotterdam promptly curled a shot in off the right post for his first career goal in Europe.

However, with just fifteen minutes to go in the match, FC Utrecht conceded its first goal in exactly 400 minutes of play in the UEFA Champions League this season when 29-year-old defender ALJE SCHUT inadvertantly headed a Steaua Bucharest free kick into his own net to equalize.

Ironically enough, just two minutes earlier, Schut could have sealed the deal for FC Utrecht but headed a corner kick over the bar at the other end.

In what turned out to be a battle of back-up World Cup goalkeepers, visiting English Premier League club LIVERPOOL and Dutch Eredivisie side FC UTRECHT produced a 0-0 draw in Group K of the UEFA Europa League.

Holland World Cup forward DIRK KUYT of Liverpool, who made 160 league appearances (51 goals) over five seasons for FC Utrecht before transferring to Feyenoord Rotterdam in the summer of 2003, was given a warm welcome by the faithful at the Stadion Galgenwaard before the match.

Meanwhile, Spain’s PEPE REINA made several sharp plays between the sticks for Liverpool while Dutchman MICHEL VORM proved himself unbeatable at the other end for FC Utrecht.

Spain World Cup champion striker FERNANDO TORRES, who scored 18 goals in 22 league games to lead the Reds last term, made his first appearance for Liverpool in Europe this season. However, the 26-year-old attacker, who has found the back of the net just once in six Premier League games to start the new campaign, continued his struggles to score. Torres did have one quality shot on target that was turned aside by the quick reflexes of Vorm in the 57th minute.

FC Utrecht striker RICKY VAN WOLFSWINKEL, who had scored six goals in six UEFA Europa League matches and another seven goals in seven Dutch league games so far this season coming into the contest versus Liverpool, was effectively restrained by the Reds’ defense for the evening.

Zambia international striker JACOB MULENGA, FC Utrecht’s leading goal-scorer in the Eredivisie, had a late opportunity for the game-winner in a one-on-one situation with Reina but sent his shot wide of the post.

23-year-old midfielder NANA ASARE of Ghana opened FC Utrecht’s account after a feed from Belgian winger DRIES MERTENS, scorer of the only goal from the first leg.

Next, 21-year-old winger RICKY VAN WOLFSWINKEL raced in to score his third goal in four Europa League matches this summer with a ball headed on by Zambia international JACOB MULENGA.

Then, veteran Denmark international midfielder MICHAEL SILBERBAUER knifed right through three FC Lucerne players to effectively end the match not yet even thirty minutes old.

FC Utrecht goalkeeper MICHEL VORM, the backup shot-stopper for the World Cup finalists from the Netherlands this summer in South Africa, lost his shutout early in the second half when 19-year-old substitute forward JANKO PACAR scored with a glancing header.
