Epic Derby Of Eternal Enemies

======================================================

The “DAY OF ETERNAL ENEMIES” Derby in Athens did not disappoint to say the least. This particular intra-city clash truly did have it all, then. Excitement, suspense, drama, and, of course, controversy — perhaps more than enough as a matter of fact.

A frenzied finish involved a perfectly-valid goal denied to the visitors and an injury time winner which sent the home supporters into a wild state of delirium as FC OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS defeated long-time, bitter cross-town adversary FC PANATHINAIKOS ATHENS 2-1 in a most critical Greek Super League match.

Defending champions Panathinaikos entered the game seven points adrift in the standings with just eight contests remaining in the championship and needing nothing but absolute victory. The Shamrock, however, proceeded to give away most of the possession for the entire first half and went down 1-0 after only twenty minutes. 34-year-old, three-time Brazil World Cup international GILBERTO SILVA, the club captain and former FC Arsenal midfielder, conceded a fateful free kick which Olympiakos took full advantage of.

On a set piece obviously practiced to perfection at the training ground, Belgium international KEVIN MIRALLAS of Olympiakos positioned himself on the end of the Panathinaikos wall and then peeled off at the last moment on a run into space; Argentina international midfielder ARIEL IBAGAZA slid The Legend’s leading scorer a precise pass and the striker on loan from French side OSC Lille proceeded to shoot his 10th goal in the Greek Super League this season.

========================================================

Not for the last time on the evening, thick clouds of smoke emanating from flares lit by elated Olympiakos supporters celebrating the goal by Mirallas forced the referee to hold up the match.

Despite the utter lack of possession and opportunity in the first half, the defending champions did generate one chance just before the half to bring about the game’s first great controversy. Greece World Cup defender and Olympiakos captain VASILIS TOROSIDIS, in an aerial dual with Panathinaikos winger SOTIRIS NINIS, headed the ball off his own arm in the penalty area. To Trifylli, however, had their appeals for a spot kick turned down as a foul was whistled against Ninis for what was a minimal amount of contact.

It is unknown exactly what Portuguese manager JESUALDO FERREIRA told his troops during the halftime talk. Surely, it was reiterated that the current champion could not expect to retain its Greek Super League title in the wake of a loss to its fierce arch-enemy in the great intra-city derby match. Whatever the case, a completely different Panathinaikos team appeared on the pitch for the second half.

At the vanguard of the offensive revival for The Shamrock was Argentine winger SEBASTIAN LETO, one of the very few players in history who has ever signed for Panathinaikos after first playing for ultimate rival Olympiakos; two minutes before the hour, thanks to the influential 24-year-old, To Trifylli pulled level.

========================================================

========================================================
Greece World Cup defender and FC Olympiakos Piraeus club captain VASILIS TOROSIDIS (35) found himself in the thick of controversy throughout the most recent Derby of Eternal Enemies clash with FC Panathinaikos Athens and was ultimately given his marching orders with a straight red card. ========================================================

Leto flighted an in-swinging free kick from the right into the box looking for Spanish teammate and defender JOSU SARRIEGI, who was unable to make contact. The Olympiakos defense did not either, though, and so the ball was permitted to bounce right past the diving Spanish netminder URKO PARDO for the equalizing goal — game on!

Spain international winger ALBERT RIERA, the big-money buy this past summer from English Premier League outfit FC Liverpool, attempted to restore the Olympiakos advantage and fired a couple of dangerous drives that Greece World Cup goalkeeper ALEXANDROS TZORVAS did well to cope with for Panathinaikos.

Another pair of ex-Liverpool players combined to generate a great chance for The Shamrock at the other end shortly thereafter. France World Cup striker DJIBRIL CISSE, the leading scorer in all the Greek Super League with 18 goals this term, latched onto a cross by Leto and headed a dangerous ball down towards the far post. But the Olympiakos goalkeeper Urko, at full stretch, managed to deal with the threat.

Panathinaikos understood full well that this was a must-win situation and so Ferreira looked for fresh legs, sending France World Cup winger SIDNEY GOVOU on to see about creating or scoring a deciding goal; Olympiakos, for its part, did not appear likely to settle for a draw and trotted out an attack-minded player, themselves, in Serbia World Cup striker MARKO PANTELIC as full time approached.

With less than ten minutes to play, the defending champions looked to have grabbed the goal they so desperately required. The Panathinaikos captain, the highly-experienced Gilberto Silva, corraled a ball at the top of the box from a Leto corner and sent in a shot. Urko blocked the effort, but left an inviting rebound that Greece World Cup midfielder KOSTAS KATSOURANIS quickly netted for The Shamrock.

Argentine winger SEBASTIAN LETO, who was bought by FC Panathinaikos Athens from Premier League club FC Liverpool for a reported 5.0 million English pounds after a season out on loan in the Greek Super League with FC Olympiakos Piraeus, picked a fine time to score his first goal of the season in the most recent Derby of Eternal Enemies tussle. (tempo.gr)
========================================================

At that moment, tragedy stuck Panathinaikos in the form of the linesman’s raised flag. A perfectly valid-looking goal was cruelly called back for a supposed offsides violation. For the officiating crew, the television replays did everything but confirm the dreadful decision.

As the match moved into time added on, Morocco international JAOUAD ZAIRI floated a cross into the area that would bounced off the shoulder of Brazil international midfielder DUDU, a fellow second half substitute for Olympiakos of the winger. The ball flicked on to Algeria World Cup striker RAFIK DJEBBOUR, the recent signing of Thrylos from AEK Athens who scored his first goal for The Legend just last week. Djebbour chested the ball down and squeezed his shot through the legs of the hapless Tzorvas.

The Panathinaikos defense looked to the match referee and his linesman. The Shamrock felt that Pantelic had either been offsides or interferring with Tzorvas as the winning goal was scored, if not both. To great the defending champions’s great dismay, the appeal fell on deaf ears.

Choas arrived on the heels of the controversial strike. Yet again, thick clouds of smoke from flares descended upon the pitch and the referee, again, had no other choice but to delay the restart for a considerable period of time. Soon the Olympiakos captain Torosidis would be dismissed for a head butt directed at the Panathinaikos winger Leto.

With the final whistle came the pitch invasion…

Pitch Invasion, Panathinaikos Players Attacked By Olympiakos Supporters

============================================
France World Cup striker DJIBRIL CISSE (above), who leads the the Greek Super League again this season with 18 goals, was one of several FC PANATHINAIKOS ATHENS players attacked by supporters of bitter rival FC OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS following the conclusion of the dramatic and controversial DERBY OF ETERNAL ENEMIES clash at the Karaiskakis Stadium in the Athens urban area of Piraeus in Greece. (ekathimerini.com)
============================================

It all happened after the final whistle, too, in the DERBY OF ETERNAL ENEMIES match.

The FC Olympiakos Piraeus supporters, perhaps caught up in the excitement of the moment, stormed the pitch to celebrate but some ended up attacking arch-rival FC Panathinaikos Athens players with kicks and punches.

According to reports, at least Panathinaikos four players were targeted for punishment — DJIBRIL CISSE, CEDRIC KANTE, SOTIRIS NINIS, and JOSU SARRIEGI.

It is also alleged that a group of Panathinaikos players sought out Olympiakos captain VASILIS TOROSIDIS, who was shown the red card for headbutting Argentine winger SEBEASTIAN LETO late in the game, and instead ended up in a confrontation with Olympiakos president VANGELIS MARINAKIS, a shipping tycoon.

Marinakis is also said to have later exchanged angry words with Cisse in the changing room.

A Derby of Eternal Enemies, indeed.

Djebbour Is Derby Of Eternal Enemies Dandy

========================================================

In a DERBY OF ETERNAL ENEMIES game that will long be remembered for its abundance of controversy and drama, it is Algeria World Cup striker RAFIK DJEBBOUR who goes into the record book as scorer of the match-winning goal for FC OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS.

A second goal in as many matches — the dramatic, injury-time tally against fierce foe FC Panathinaikos Athens in the ultimate Greek rivalry — could not be a better way for the 26-year-old attacker to begin his stay with The Legend.

Djebbour recently signed a six-month contract with Thrylos on a free transfer after requesting his release from AEK Athens, for whom he had scored five goals in eleven Greek Super League games this season, in the wake of a confrontation with the capital city club’s Spanish manager MANOLO JIMENEZ.

“Derby Of Eternal Enemies” : Olympiakos v Panathinaikos

=============================================

FC PANATHINAIKOS ATHENS and FC OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS are far and away the two most successful sides in the history of Greek football.

The two sides also happen to be the bitterest of rivals for reasons that originated outside the football stadium and, as a result, the local derby between the two is always guaranteed to feature a highly-charged, electric atmosphere.

The match itself is known as the “DERBY OF ETERNAL ENEMIES”

===============================================

===============================================

Since the 1959-60 football season, FC Olympiakos Piraeus hold the edge in the win column, 37 to 26 (41 draws), opposite cross-town adversary FC Panathinaikos Athens for Greek Super League matches played.

Olympiakos have been more dominant throughout the history of the Greek Cup with 19 wins against just nine losses (ten ties).

Paced by a pair of goals from France World Cup striker DJIBRIL CISSE, Panathinaikos did pull off a come-from-behind victory in the last edition of the Derby of Eternal Enemies.

FC Olympiakos Piraeus : Final Push For Greek Title

========================================================
A pair of key off-season acquisitions in attack for FC OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS, Serbia World Cup striker MARKO PANTELIC (9) and Belgium international forward KEVIN MIRALLAS (14), have combined to score 16 goals in the Greek Super League for Thrylos this season. (www.sportena.com)
========================================================

Having won the last ten league games on the trot, FC OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS are poised to make a final push for the Greek title beginning with a big victory over cross-town, arch-rival FC Panathinaikos Athens in the “DERBY OF ETERNAL ENEMIES”.

FC Olympiakos Piraeus are the all-time king in Greece with 37 domestic crowns to its credit but had their five-year championship streak snapped last year by its traditional, intra-city foe. Thrylos (The Legend) have recovered nicely since the early-season sacking of new German trainer EWALD LIENEN following an early exit at the hands of Israeli club FC Maccabi Tel Aviv in the UEFA Europa League. Under the guidance of Spanish manager ERNESTO VALVERDE, Olympiakos have opened up a seven-point advantage with just eight games remaining in the Greek top flight this term.

The in-form player at the moment is Spanish midfielder DAVID FUSTER, who has scored four goals in his Olympiakos’ last five games and seven in the span of the ten-match winning streak; the 29-year-old off-season addition costing 1.5 million Euros from La Liga side CF Villarreal is joint-top scorer for Thrylos with nine goals.

Belgium international striker KEVIN MIRALLAS, out on loan to the Greek club from French side AS St. Etienne, has had a career year with his nine goals for Olympiakos. Serbia World Cup striker MARKO PANTELIC has contributed seven goals to The Legend in the league. And, Algeria World Cup striker RAFIK DJEBBOUR, who was signed on a free transfer from AEK ATHENS towards the end of January, scored a first goal for Olympiakos, his sixth of the season, in last week’s 2-1 victory over FC Aris Thessaloniki.

A key ingredient to the attack has been Spanish international ALBERT RIERA, who was purchased from English Premier League club FC Liverpool for an initial fee of 3.3 million pounds (4.0 million Euros). The 28-year-old winger has also attained a personal best with six goals in the Greek top flight this term. Liverpool stand to profit another 1.6 million English pounds should Olympiakos, indeed, capture the league championship.

One highly-experienced element at the disposal of Olympiakos is Denmark World Cup winger DENNIS ROMMEDAHL, who has earned 107 caps and scored 18 goals for his country over his career; like Pantelic, the 32-year-old veteran played with Ajax Amsterdam and joined The Legend this summer on a free transfer.

Colautti, who spent the past three years in Germany with Borussia Moenchengladbach, counted his first Europa League goal in four matches this season for FC Maccabi Tel Aviv with a header not long before the halftime whistle.

35-year-old veteran Israel international goalkeeper LIRAN STRAUBER earned his clean sheet for FC Maccabi Tel Aviv with a diving save late in the match.

It all came apart for the visitors shortly after Cameroon international midfielder ALBERT BANING, a fresh face from Racing Club Strasbourg in France, was shown as second yellow card in the 60th minute at the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, a suburb of Athens, Greece.

Bosnia international midfielder HARIS MEDUNJANIN, the recent signing from Spanish club Real Valladolid, had scored his third UEFA Europa League goal in as many matches this summer to give FC MACCABI TEL AVIV the lead from the spot within the opening twenty minutes.

But, Morocco international midfielder JAOUAD ZAIRI, an early second half substitute, and Denmark World Cup winger DENNIS ROMMEDAHL scored goals for FC OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS roughly five minutes apart shortly after the banishment of Baning to give the home side the first leg of the UEFA Europa League third round qualifying tie.

The 32-year-old veteran Rommedahl, a free transfer this summer from Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands who now stands on 99 caps (17 goals) for Denmark, is a match-winner on his debut for Olympiakos then.

Liverpool Cut Losses With Albert Riera / Winger To Olympiakos Of Athens

=====================================================

=====================================================

FC LIVERPOOL have, as expected, off-loaded ALBERT RIERA by selling the Spain international winger to Greek side OLYMPIAKOS PIRAEUS ATHENS in a transaction that could amount to as much as 4.9 million English pounds for the Reds.

Riera, whose last game for Liverpool was in the UEFA Europe League against French club OSC Lille this March 11 past, had his fate sealed after the player’s critical comments of both the Reds organization and then-manager RAFAEL BENITEZ appeared in the Spanish press one week later.

Riera, who made 33 starts for the Reds in all competitions his first year at Anfield as compared to just eleven in his second, was immediately transfer listed and never played for Liverpool ever again.

Olympiakos Piraeus forked over 3.3 million English pounds up front for Riera; if German manager EWALD LIENEN’s side capture the Greek championship this season, Liverpool will be entitled to an additional payment of a further 1.6 million English pounds from the Athens club.

Riera was purchased by Liverpool from Spanish club RCD Espanyol Barcelona at a cost of 8.0 million English pounds in September of 2008.

The Greek media is reporting that the Spanish international winger is to be paid at the rate of 2.5 million Euros for the season.
