Werder Bremen 0 – Bayern Munich 2

========================================================

09/29/12
Bundesliga
Spieltag # 6

0 – WERDER BREMEN
2 – BAYERN MUNICH ————– Luiz Gustavo 81′, Mandzukic 83′

A very tightly-contested but extremely entertaining match was only settled late by a genuine world-class goal and subsequent lighting strike off the counterattack as visiting BAYERN MUNICH defeated WERDER BREMEN in the Bundesliga and maintained its 100% winning ways with a sixth consecutive triumph to open this 2012/13 campaign.

Peru international CLAUDIO PIZARRO, the aging veteran who spent the past four years scoring 62 Bundesliga goals for Werder Bremen before transferring to Bayern Munich for a second tour of duty this past summer, was included in the Startelf for the Bavarians by trainer JUPP HEYNCKES. The 34-year-old striker, who was given a warm pre-match greeting by die Werderaner supporters it shall be noted, also had both the first and last chances of what developed into a great defensive struggle. Pizzaro’s header in the 43rd minute, fortunately for the home side, did not miss by much at all.

LUIZ GUSTAVO had scored a pretty dramatic goal with a 90th minute winner against Vfl Wolfsburg in the second round of the 2011/12 Bundesliga campaign. And the 25-year-old Brazil international midfielder had also found the back of the net a few weeks ago with a fine strike against Vfb Stuttgart. But the sheer world-class quality of this ball from the top of the arc curled up and over the diving Werder Bremen shot-stopper SEBASTIAN MIELITZ and into the left corner of the net by the ambitious Luiz Gustavo was certainly something to behold, though.

Also breathtaking was the pace of the deadly Bayern Munich counterattack following an unsuccessful Werder Bremen corner kick. An off and running France international winger FRANCK RIBERY played a lovely ball down the left wing for streaking Switzerland international midfielder XHERDAN SHAQIRI, the little tank who immediately played a splendid ball across the box for his fellow second half substitute. A sixth strike in the Bundesliga already this term from productive Croatia international striker MARIO MANDZUKIC, who scored 12 goals in 32 games for Vfl Wolfsburg all of last season, sealed the deal for the in-form record German champions.

Bayern Munich equaled the club record to begin a season by winning its ninth consecutive match in all compeitions on the trot.

Pokalfinale, is pursued by Switzerland international defender FRANCOIS AFFOLTTER, the 21-year-old who joined die Werderaner on loan from Young Boys Bern over the Winterpause, during the Bundesliga contest at the Weserstadion in the north German port city.

Bundesliga
Spieltag # 32

1 – WERDER BREMEN —————— Naldo 51′
2 – BAYERN MUNICH —————— own goal 75′, Ribery 90′

An unfortunate own goal with only a quarter hour to play set the stage for yet another last-minute strike as understrength BAYERN MUNICH rallied dramatically to defeat host WERDER BREMEN 2-1 on a day when the Bundesliga title was formally decided somewhere else.

With the a journey to Spain for the second leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal tie with current La Liga leader Real Madrid looming in midweek, the Bayern Munich trainer decided to take absolutely no chances. Only three of the players who had appeared with the Startelf for the dramatic 2-1 first leg victory over Los Blancos were selected for the weekend match with Werder Bremen by JUPP HEYNCKES, who once steered Real Madrid to the UEFA Champions League crown in the spring of the 1997-98 campaign. And so, youthful Japan international midfielder TAKASHI USAMI, the 19-year-old on loan for the season from Gamba Osaka who has netted six goals in 18 matches for the Bayern Munich reserves this term, started a Bundesliga match for the very first time in his career.

NILS PETERSEN, the summer signing from FC Energie Cottbus who led the 2.Bundesliga with 25 goals last season, was another inserted into the line-up. The 23-year-old striker generated the two most-threatening chances in the opening forty-five minutes for Bayern Munich and was unlucky to have Werder Bremen goalkeeper TIM WIESE, number two on the national team these days, deny his header from about seven or eight yards out in the 19th minute. The fortunes of Petersen, who has scored four goals in all competitions for Bayern Munich this term, deteriorated even further when his fierce drive smashed off the crossbar just before the halftime break.

========================================================

Werder Bremen went to the lead shortly after the restart by taking full advantage of a corner kick in the 51st minute. Austria international midfielder ZLATKO JUNUZOVIC, who was purchased by Werder Bremen from FK Austria Vienna for a reported transfer fee of 800,000 Euros during the Winterpause, floated over a ball that veteran Peru international CLAUDIO PIZARRO essentially nodded on and with great effect, as well. Brazil international defender NIVALDO, the 29-year-old veteran who has been with Werder Bremen since arriving from RS Juventude in the summer of 2005, chested down and thumped the ball home before celebrating his 22nd career Bundesliga goal.

Heynckes, however, was not about to concede all three points without offering some resistance and, in accordance, sent on a trio of replacement players including in-from France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY, the man had scored such an important goal in the UEFA Champions League semifinal first leg match with Real Madrid.

===================================================

===================================================

The arrival of Ribery breathed a new life into the Bavarian attack, which found itself level with a quarter of an hour to go. At the heart of this development had been the dimunitive Frenchman on yet another of his trademark runs down the left flank. Under no pressure whatsoever, the unlucky Nivaldo tragically turned Ribery’s cross into the back of his own Werder Bremen net and completely changed the course of the whole game in the process.

Bayern Munich now pushed for a winner but Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER could not find the target with a header from close range. Ribery fired a low, left-footer that did not miss by much. And Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS, one of the three second half subsitututes sent on by Heynckes, curled a shot past the diving Wiese but just wide of the post.

In the final minute of regulation, Ribery found himself with the ball in the box once again following a sharp diagonal pass from Kroos. After a fake to the right which left youthful Werder Bremen midfielder ALEKSANDAR STEVANOVIC, the 20-year-old on his first career starting assignment in the Bundesliga, frozen for a crucial moment, the Fabulous Frenchman flashed to his left and unleashed a left-footed, pinpointed-laser that tucked inside the far post and afforded the outstretched Wiese no chance. And, thus, Ribery recorded his career-best 12th Bundesliga goal of the season in sensational fashion to bring Bayern Munich a second last-minute victory in as many matches.

Bayern Munich 4 – Werder Bremen 1

Bundesliga
Spieltag # 15

4 – BAYERN MUNICH ———— Ribery 22′, 77′, Robben pen 69′, pen 83′
1 – WERDER BREMEN ———— Rosenberg 52′

Three unanswered goals in the second half featuring a second of the contest from each of the dynamic “Robbery” duo sparked the record German champion as BAYERN MUNICH routed visiting northern rival WERDER BREMEN 4-1 in the end to reclaim the top spot in the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich had not defeated Werder Bremen at home since 2005 but this did not prevent Austria international midfielder DAVID ALABA from winning a 50/50 ball in his own defensive third of the field immediately following a corner. The nicely developing 19-year-old then had a look and distributed a lovely diagonal pass into the path of France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY over on the left. The in-form Frenchman dribbled inside the semi-circle at the top of the box before blasting a right-footed, precision rocket in off the post to put the Bavarians in front after twenty-two minutes.

Werder Bremen entered the contest trailing Bayern Munich by just two points in the standings and were apt to make the most of the opportnity in this latest installment of the so-called Nord-Sued Derby at the once again sold-out Allianz Arena. Austria international striker MARKO ARNAUTOVIC, who has gone more than two months without a goal for die Werderaner, was withdrawn at halftime in favor of Sweden international striker MARKUS ROSENBERG, the 29-year-old veteran who spent all of last season out on loan to Racing Santander in Spain and had not scored in the Bundesliga since late August. Only seven minutes into the second half, Rosenberg rewarded trainer THOMAS SCHAAF’s faith and brought the visitors level after taking a short pass from former Bayern Munich attacker and Peru international CLAUDIO PIZARRO and lashing a left-footer, also from inside the semi-circle, past the outstretched Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER in between the Bavarian sticks.

========================================================================

Bayern Munich trainer JUPP HEYNCKES looked down his bench and introduced Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN for Alaba on the hour. It took a mere nine minutes for the Bavarians’ substitute to re-establish Bayern Munich’s lead after Werder Bremen defender ANDREAS WOLF clearly fouled Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER in the box and the Dangerous Dutchman dutifully dispatched the ensuing spot kick. A symbolic strike, then, as for the first time in thirteen matches in all competitions, Robben had tallied once again for the record German champions.

The one-time FC Chelsea and Real Madrid winger continued to exert his influence and issued a wonderful through ball for Germany World Cup striker MARIO GOMEZ in the 77th minute. The Bundesliga’s leading scorer accepted Robben’s pass and easily rounded Werder Bremen reserve goalkeeper SEBASTIAN MIELITZ, standing in for the absent Germany international TIM WEISE. Perhaps with a slightly better angle, Ribery arrived to finish for his second goal of the game and 10th for Bayern Munich in all competitions this term.

Shortly after Germany international midfielder AARON HUNT of Werder Bremen was shown a straight red card for a nasty, two-footed, studs-up challenge of Bayern Munich’s Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS in the 81st minute, Ribery was given a push in the box by die Werderaner’s SOKRATIS PAPASTATHOPOULOS, the Greece World Cup defender on loan in Germany for the season from Italian Serie A side CFC Genoa; Robben sent Mielitz the wrong way to score his fourth Bundesliga goal of this term and wrap up a very important as well as satisfying victory for Bayern Munich.

BUNDESLIGA
Speiltag # 20
1/29/2011

1 – Werder Bremen ————– Mertesacker 47′
3 – Bayern Munich ————— Robben 65′, own goal 76′, Klose 86′

Three unanswered strikes overcame a potentially demoralizing goal conceded at the start of the second half and catapulted defending champion BAYERN MUNICH to an important 3-1 defeat of traditional north German fival WERDER BREMEN in the Bundesliga.

On the heels of a less-than-overwhelming, scoreless opening session, the Bavarians allowed their Hanseatic League adversary to take the lead just two minutes after the restart. 34-year-old Germany international midfielder TORSTEN FRINGS flighted a free kick for Werder Bremen that was flicked on by Austria international defender SEBASTIAN PROEDL. Collecting the ball at the back post was Germany World Cup centerback PER MERTESACKER, who curled the ball around Bayern Munich goalkeeper THOMAS KRAFT to score his first goal of the Bundesliga season.

The return of Holland World Cup winger ARJEN Robben to competition has had an immediate, noticeable effect which manifested itself once more for Bayern Munich five minutes after the hour. Croatia midfielder DANIJEL PRANJIC, who leads the Bavarians with six assists in the Bundesliga this season, made a penetrating run into the box after a throw-in and provided a ball for a leaping Robben to tap in from just a few yards out. Including the DFB Pokal match in midweek, the Dutchman had delivered goals in Bayern Munich’s last three games.

========================================================

Bayern Munich began to tighten the screws after the tying goal but appeared to be struggling with their finishing before the break of the match went its way; Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ, the Bavarians leading scorer with 15 goals in the Bundesliga this term, finished off a run in the box on the right by having his centering pass turned into the net by the Werder Bremen goal-scorer Mertesacker with a little less than a quarter hour remaining.

Bayern Munich, who almost doubled-up their hosts in the shots-at-goal department, killed off the game with a goal less than four minutes from time. Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER won the ball and broke in on Werder Bremen’s Germany international goalkeeper TIM WIESE. With a four-game goal-scoring streak soon to be broken, the 21-year-old South Africa star lured Wiese and squared the ball for veteran Germany World Cup striker MIROSLAV KLOSE. With the net wide open, the 32-year-old veteran walked the ball in to score his very first goal of this 2010-11 Bundesliga season.

The aging Klose, so vital to the cause in South Africa last summer, has scored three goals in the German Cup and another in the UEFA Champions League for Bayern Munich this term, as well.

An important and morale-boosting triumph for the Bavarians, then. The charges of Dutch trainer LOUIS VAN GAAL have climbed into third place in the Bundesliga, which is the cut-off for entry into next season’s always-lucrative Champions League competition. A third victory in a row, also, for Bayern Munich, who are beginning to gather momentum having won seven as part of its current eight-match unbeaten run.

Werder Bremen Ship Almeida To Turkey

========================================================

========================================================

WERDER BREMEN, sitting 14th out of eighteen teams in the German Bundesliga, will be moving ahead without its leading goal-scorer when the season resumes in 2011 after the Winterpause.

Portugal World Cup striker HUGO ALMEIDA, who tops die Gruen-Weissen with nine goals in the Bundesliga and has scored 11 goals in all competitions thus far this season, has been sold by Werder Bremen to Turkish Super Lig club JK Besiktas Istanbul for a transfer fee of 2.0 million Euros.

The 26-year-old striker, who was originally purchased by the north German club from Portuguese side FC Porto for 4.0 million Euros after a loan season in the summer of 2007, has not played for Werder Bremen, however, in the Bundesliga since being sent off late in the match with FC St. Pauli of Hamburg in late November; Almeida, who scored just one goal in Europe this term, made his last apperance for the the Green-Whites in the UEFA Champions League match with Italian side Inter Milan on December 7.

JK Besiktas Istanbul are managed by former West Germany international midfielder BERND SCHUSTER and looking to beef up their attack ahead of their February UEFA Europa League round of 32 knockout tie with Ukranian side Dynamo Kiev.

Almeida is the second Portugal World Cup player signed this week by JK Besiktas Istanbul and Schuster after the addition of 31-year-old veteran winger SIMAO (Simao Sabrosa Fonseca Sabrosa), who has earned 85 caps and scored 22 goals for his country, from Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

JK Besiktas Istanbul had already acquired 27-year-old Portugal international winger RICARDO QUARESMA (27 caps, three goals) from Italian Serie A side and reigning European champion Inter Milan to start this 2010-11 season.

UEFA Champions League
Group Stage
12/7/2010

3 – Werder Bremen (GER) ——— Proedl 39′, Arnautovic 49′, Pizarro 88′
0 – Inter Milan (ITA)

A question of character and pride for a team with no hope of continuing in Europe this season is answered as host Bundesliga side WERDER BREMEN blew away visting Italian Serie A side and defending tournament champions INTER MILAN 3-0 in the final round of play for Group A of the UEFA Champions League.

Inter Milan, tied with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur on ten points heading into the last round at the group stage, might have taken the hosts a bit lightly. Spanish manager RAFAEL BENITEZ gave LUCA CASTELLAZZI, the 35-year-old signed this summer from Sampdoria of Genoa who has been starting in place of injured Brazil World Cup goalkeeper JULIO CESAR since the beginning of November, the night off. Instead, veteran third choice PAOLO ORLANDONI was given his UEFA Champions League debut by the Italian side.

Orlandoni has been with Inter Milan since the summer of 2005 but has played exactly four Serie A matches since; the 38-year-old had not started a match since the 2007-08 season.

Werder Bremen, perhaps better able to cope with the cold weather, took the initiative and would outshoot Inter Milan 14-5 for the evening.

==================================================

Pressure from Werder Bremen finally paid off for the home side when Austria international defender SEBASTIAN PROEDL elevated himself to head the corner kick of veteran Germany international midfielder TORSTEN FRINGS into the net in the 39th minute.

Proedl, the only player to appear for injury-hit Werder Bremen in all 15 Bundesliga games this season, celebrated his first goal in any competition for die Gruen-Weissen this term.

Another Austria international, MARKO ARNAUTOVIC, added a second goal for Werder Bremen just after the break. The 21-year-old striker, who made just three Serie A substitute appearances all season for Inter Milan after being sent out on loan by Dutch club FC Twente Enschede last year, took a curling cross from Portugal World Cup striker HUGO ALMEIDA and snapped an impressive side-volley past Orlandoni. Arnautovic, who has scored two goals in a dozen Bundesliga matches this season, counts another pair from European play this term.

Peru international striker CLAUDIO PIZARRO, who has started just six Bundesliga games while struggling with fitness this season, posted the final tally after coming on as a substitute in the final quarter hour.

The 32-year-old striker, who has 35 Bundesliga goals for Werder Bremen since signing from English outfit FC Chelsea in August of 2009, turned sharply after a ball from 30-year-old Germany international defender CLEMENS FRITZ and blasted a shot from just above the penalty arc beyond the reach of the diving Orlandoni.

Pizarro, who ended as Werder Bremen’s leader with three goals in the UEFA Champions League this year, has now posted seven Tore in all competitions for the north German club.

UEFA Champions League
Group Stage
11/24/2010

3 – Tottenham Hotspur (ENG) ——— Kaboul 6′, Modric 45+1′, Crouch 79′
0 – Werder Bremen (GER)

An skillful volley in just the sixth minute of the match sent English Premier League side TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR well on their way to a 3-0 defeat of German Bundesliga club WERDER BREMEN in Group A of the UEFA Champions League.

Exposed badly on two occasions by England World Cup winger AARON LENNON leading directly to goals was visiting left back DOMINIK SCHMIDT, the 23-year-old on his Champions League debut who has yet to play a match domestically in his career higher than the 3.Bundesliga with the Werder Bremen reserves.

19-year-old FELIX KROOS, who has 27 games in the 2.Bundesliga with Hansa Rostock under his belt but has spent all of this season with Werder Bremen reserves thus far since his summer transfer, also made his inaugural appearance in the Champions League for the Gruen-Weissen and gave away a penalty kick in the second half.

20-year-old ONUR AYIK and his two career Bundesliga games worth of experience replaced Kroos for Werder Bremen in the 55th minute.

Meanwhile, 22-year-old SANDRO WAGNER, with exactly a dozen career Bundesliga apperances (and no goals) to his credit, was given the start by Werder Bremen coach THOMAS SCHAAF up front as the solitary striker and had little, if any, effect.

18-year-old LENNART THY, who has played all of the 28 games comprising his young career with the Werder Bremen reserves in the 3.Bundesliga, was sent on for the final ten minutes of the match against Tottenham Hotspur in England.

After dramatic qualification for the UEFA Champions League group stage in Italy against Sampdoria of Genoa, Werder Bremen’s wretched Group A campaign is, mercifully, almost concluded.

UEFA Champions League
Group Stage
11/2/2010

0 – Werder Bremen (GER)
2 – FC Twente Enschede (HOL) ——— Chadli 81′, De Jong 84′

A late red card and two goals in the final ten minutes enabled visiting Dutch side FC TWENTE ENSCHEDE to defeat ten-man WERDER BREMEN 2-0 and claim their first victory in Group A of the UEFA Champions League.

Although each side created several opportunities throughout the match, a scoreless draw looked entirely possible until Werder Bremen’s 33-year-old veteran Germany international midfielder TORSTEN FRINGS was shown the straight red card in the 74th minute; after a foul on FC Twente Enschede’s Costa Rica winger BRYAN RUIZ, the captain directed an outburst at match official ALAIN HAMER of Luxembourg, who would have none of it.

Frings was one of two Werder Bremen midfielders, the Brazilian WESLEY being the other, who were pressed into duty on the back line for head coach THOMAS SCHAAF’s side.

FC Twente Enschede, who assumed the lead in the Dutch Eredivisie after a 1-0 win in a top-of-the-table clash with PSV Eindhoven over the weekend, took immediate advantage of the open space and took the lead with a little less than ten minutes remaining in the match.

In the 81st minute, NACER CHADLI, who scored the only goal of the game against PSV Eindhoven last Saturday, stormed down the left and cut past Werder Bremen’s Austria international defender SEBASTIAN PROEDL to the middle; the 21-year-old Belgian winger then fired a low shot that was deflected by Germany World Cup defender PER MERTESACKER past Werder Bremen’s 21-year-old reserve goalkeeper STEFAN MIELITZ.

Three minutes later, after a run down the left, the Costa Rican Ruiz played a curling cross from the top of the box for FC Twente Enschede’s 20-year-old LUUK DE JONG, deployed as an attacking midfielder for the visiting Dutch side, to crouch down low and dispatch inside the near post on the right.

With the win, FC Twente Enschede haul themselves back into contention for the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League; the former Belgium international goalkeeper MICHEL PREUD’HOMME’s side are in third place in Group A of two points behind defending European champions Inter Milan of Italy and English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, who both stand on seven points now.

With the loss, Werder Bremen are effectively toast with just two points from four Group A games.

DFB Pokal
2nd round
October 26, 2010

2 – Bayern Munich ————- Schweinsteiger 27′, 74′
1 – Werder Bremen ———— Pizarro 2′

A brace from Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER boosted BAYERN MUNICH to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over long-time Bundesliga rivals WERDER BREMEN in the second round of the German Cup.

The occasion marked the 100th meeting of Bayern Munich and Werder Bremen all-time in the spirited North-South regional battle between the two German clubs.

The visiting side silenced the home crowd quickly when Peru international and former Bayern Munich striker CLAUDIO PIZARRO, who scored 71 Bundesliga goals for the Bavarian side before packing his bags for England in 2007, stuck out his leg to steer home with a thigh the cross from Austria international striker MARKO ARNAUTOVIC to give Werder Bremen the 1-0 lead in just the second minute of the match.

Austria international defender SEBASTIAN PROEDL had a glorious opportunity to double Werder Bremen’s advantage but headed over the goal from five meters out in the 25th minute.

The unfortunate Proedl was made to pay for his inability to finish in short order.

In the 27th minute, the cross of Bayern Munich’s Turkey international HAMIT ALTINTOP was flubbed in the box by the on-rushing Germany World Cup reserve midfielder TONI KROOS. However, the ball rolled to straight to Bayern Munich’s Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, who casually stroked home from six yards out. The Werder Bremen players appealed for offsides, which was not given and, thus, the game was tied.

In the second half, the visitors from north Germany had their share of chances with the match still even as the Peruvian striker Pizarro had a header cleared off the Bavarians’ line by the Turkish midfielder Altintop and the Austrian Arnautovic struck the crossbar with a free kick.

But, Bayern Munich, who defeated Werder Bremen 4-0 in the final to lift the 2010 DFP Pokal, grabbed the game-winner in the 74th minute when Schweinsteiger unleashed a dipping drive from about forty yards and beat Werder Bremen’s 21-year-old SEBASTIAN MIELITZ, starting in place of injured Germany international TIM WIESE, for a spectacular goal.

And so for Schweinsteiger, who scored both goals – including an 89th minute winner – against Swiss side FC Basel in a 2-1 UEFA Champions League victory this season, it is a familiar storyline albeit in a different Cup competition.

For the 26-year-old defensive midfielder, the tale is also about rediscovering a goal-scoring touch at club level, too. Schweinsteiger scored just three goals for Bayern Munich in 49 games involving the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal and Champions League last season. This on the heels of a 2008-09 campaign in which the German international bagged nine goals in 43 matches in all competitions.

Off to a fine start this year in the offensive end, Schweinsteiger now counts five goals – including an injury time game-winner against Vfl Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga opener – from 14 games for Bayern Munich overall.

BAYERN MUNICH : Butt – Lahm, Tymoshchuk, Badstuber, Pranjic (Braafheid 90+3′) – Ottl, Schweinsteiger – Altintop, Kroos (van Buyten 79′), Mueller – Gomez (Olic 81′)

WERDER BREMEN : Mielitz – Fritz, Mertesacker, Proedl, Silvestre (Wagner 85′) – Bargfrede (Hunt 78′), Frings – Wesley, Pizarro, Marin (Almeida 76′) – Arnautovic
