0 – VFB STUTTGART
2 – BAYERN MUNICH ————— Mandzukic 50′, Mueller 72′

A gift goal scored five minutes after the break and an insurance tally from the visitors roughly twenty minutes from time made certain that Swabian frustration would continue as record German champion BAYERN MUNICH blanked hosting VFB STUTTGART 2-0 to maintain its double-digit lead in the Bundesliga standings.

The Bavarians have now beaten Vfb Stuttgart in eight consecutive matches, including two D.F.B. Pokal engagements. For the record, the proud Swabians, who have only been out of the German top flight for two seasons since 1963, were last able to defeat Bayern Munich in late March of 2010. With its latest victory in Baden-Wuerttemberg, the team trained by JUPP HEYNCKES maintained an 11-point advantage over nearest rival Bayer Leverkusen with but fifteen matches to play in this historic 50th Bundesliga campaign.

The hosts actually had the best chance in the first half at the sold-out Mercedes Benz Arena but the close-range header of Austria international MARTIN HARNIK, the 25-year-old winger who scored 17 goals in 34 Bundesliga games last term but has found the net just five times for Vfb Stuttgart in the top flight so far this season, struck the post and Bayern Munich’s Germany international goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER was able to secure the tantalizing rebound in the 34th minute.

======================================================================

Despite all the positives to build on after the first half of play, Vfb Stuttgart were undone by a fateful error just five minutes after the restart. A horrible backpass by Italy international CRISTIAN MOLINARO, the 29-year-old left back who has made 80 appearances for the Swabians since signing from traditional Serie A giant FC Juventus of Turin just after the New Year in 2010, was happily intercepted by Bayern Munich’s Croatia international MARIO MANDZUKIC with Swabian netminder SVEN ULREICH left completely hung out to dry. The 26-year-old striker had little trouble negotiating the former Germany U-21 international and stroked the ball into the empty net for his club-leading 12th goal in the Bundesliga this season.

Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS looked to have won a clear penalty after being bundled over by Vfb Stuttgart defender GEORG NIEDERMEIER, the 26-year-old former Bayern Munich reserve team player, but match referee FLORIAN MEYER chose to ignore the obvious and ended up booking the Bavarian midfielder after Kroos had a bit too much to say about that.

Mandzukic sealed the deal for Bayern Munich with an outstanding centering pass into the box after a run down the right flank. Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER was able to nip in ahead of Vfb Stuttgart’s World Cup reserve defender SERDAR TASCI as well as Ulreich to register his 10th goal in the Bundesliga this term at the 72nd minute mark. There was never any way back for the Swabians, particularly after the reckless Harnik was dismissed for his second yellow card infraction with just ten mintues remaining.

Bayern Munich 6 – Vfb Stuttgart 1

========================================================
The fabulous France international winger FRANCK RIBERY (right) of Bayern Munich and Vfb Stuttgart’s on-loan fullback GOTOKU SAKAI, the 21-year-old who is still under contract to J-League club Albirex Niigata and was most recently a member of Japan’s squad at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games hosted by London in Great Britain, battle for the ball during the traditional Bundesliga match-up of southern German rivals at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Bavaria.

Bundesliga
Spieltag # 2

6 – BAYERN MUNICH ——— Mueller 32′, 49′, Kroos 33′, Luiz Gustavo 43′, Mandzukic 47′, Schweinsteiger 51′
1 – VFB STUTTGART ——— Harnik 25′

Having conceded first via a well-taken set piece produced by the visitors only twenty-five minutes into the match, the obviously-agitatged home side promply engaged and exploded a six-goal bomb over the course of the next twenty-six minutes to follow as record German champion BAYERN MUNICH absolutely obliterated unfortunate VFB STUTTGART 6-1 in the historic 50th Bundesliga Season opener at the Allianz Arena in Bavaria.

Austria international MARTIN HARNIK had a wonderful chance in the only the fourth minute only to see the very tips of Germany first choice goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER’s fingers do enough to steer his fierce, left-footed shot harmlessly off the Bayern Munich crossbar. A little over twenty minutes on, however, the 25-year-old former Werder Bremen and Fortuna Duesseldorf winger who led the Swabians with 17 goals in the Bundesliga last term spectacularly shot the visitors ahead after a free kick taken from the left by veteran Ivory Coast international defender ARTHUR BOKA. Although it is still very early into the new campaign, Harnik’s skillful volley at the far right post must surely endure as one of the most fabulous goals struck this entire 2012/13 Bundesliga season.

Vfb Stuttgart’s goal, though, came very much against the run of play and it did not take long for Bayern Munich to launch an overwhelming counterattack. A little past the half-hour mark, Germany international THOMAS MUELLER volleyed a right wing cross from Croatia international striker MARIO MANDZUKIC that visiting goalkeeper SVEN ULREICH halted but not much more. Thus, the alert Mueller was able to outhustle the lackadasical Swabian defense and toe-poke past the one-time Germany U-21 international to level matters in the 32nd minute.

Within sixty seconds, Brazil international midfielder LUIZ GUSTAVO stole the ball on Vfb Stuttgart’s side of the center stripe and quickly fed the streaking Germany international TONI KROOS. A rising rocket from the 22-year-old midfielder who tallied nine goals in the Bundesliga while out on loan to Bayer Leverkusen during the 2009/10 campaign left Ulreich no chance while completing a stunning reversal of fortunes. Roughly ten minutes later, the influential Luiz Gustavo unleashed a long range, left-footed bomb from well outside the penalty box which swerved away from the diving Vfb Stuttgart netminder and banked in off the post while doubling Bayern Munich’s advantage in the 43rd minute.

========================================================

========================================================
Bosnia / Herzegovina international striker VEDAD IBISEVIC (9) of Vfb Stuttgart, the former collegiate All-American at St. Louis University who started his European professional career with Paris St. Germain in France and has since registered 51 Bundesliga goals for both TSG 1899 Hoffenheim as well as the Swabians the past four seasons combined, is dismissed by match referee THORSTEN KINHOEFER in the 74th minute after his frustrations overflowed during the contest with in-form Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.
========================================================

After the break, the Bavarians continued a relentless assault which saw the home side tack on three more goals before six minutes of the second half had been completed. Mueller had a shot turned aside by the beleaguered Ulreich but the rebound fell nicely for Mandzukic, the summer signing from Vfl Wolfsburg who slotted home from close range to record his fifth goal on his fourth competitive appearance in the colors of Bayern Munich. Only two minutes later, this very same duo had the ball in the back of the net again as Mueller nodded home at near quarters after Ulreich had saved from the Croatia international striker as the Bavarians enjoyed a five-on-two rush.

A second goal of the game and third of this fledgling Bundesliga season for the flourishing Mueller, then, who was by no means finished just yet. Another two minutes on, the soon-to-be 23-year-old winger galloped down the right and curled an inch-perfect cross into the box for surging Germany international midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER. A clinical header allowed the veteran who battled an assortment of injuries all of last term to bag his first competitive goal for Bayern Munich in a little over seven months.

Despite the enormous amount of time remaining to be played, the 6-1 scoreline meant that the devastation was thorough and complete. Vfb Stuttgart, who, historically-speaking, never fare very well on their travels to the city of Munich, finished with ten men after Bosnia / Herzegovina striker VEDAD IBISEVIC was shown the straight red card after head-butting Bayern Munich defender JEROME BOATENG in a moment of clear frustration. Meanwhile, the Swabians have now lost seven consecutive matches on the trot to the Bavarians in all competitions.

Bayern Munich trainer JUPP HEYNCKES did use the waning moments of the runaway match to give highly-touted Spain international midfielder JAVI MARTINEZ, who just broke the existing Bundesliga record with a transfer from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao that cost a staggering 40.0 million Euros, his official debut in German football.

Bayern Munich 2 – Vfb Stuttgart 0

========================================================
Brazil international midfielder LUIZ GUSTAVO (right) of Bayern Munich looks to keep his balance as Vfb Stuttgart’s Germany World Cup goal-scoring striker CACAU, the 31-year-old veteran who was born in the land of Pele but has spent his entire professional footballing career in the land of Kaiser Franz, gives chase during the Bundesliga match at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Bavaria.

Spieltag # 33

2 – BAYERN MUNICH ——————— Gomez 32′, Mueller 90+2′
0 – VFB STUTTGART

A well-taken strike just after the half half mark and and a second goal in time added on allowed a mostly reserve side for record German domestic champion BAYERN MUNICH to down traditional Sued Deutschland regional rival VFB STUTTGART 2-0 in the penultimate round of the 2011/12 Bundesliga campaign.

The contest with the visiting Swabians at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Bavaria was the last home match of this Bundesliga season for the newly-confirmed 2012 UEFA Champions League finalist. This fixture with Vfb Stuttgart also happened to coincide with ‘der Abschiedsspiel’ (Farewell Game) for Bayern Munich’s veteran reserve goalkeeper HANS-JOERG BUTT. Fittingly, the 37-year-old who earned four caps for Germany in his career and acquitted himself well in the victory over Uruguay in the 3rd Place Match at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa wore the captain’s armband for the Bavarians on his 387th and final appearance in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

As might be expected given the grueling match with Real Madrid in Spain earlier this week, Bayern Munich trainer JUPP HEYNCKES once again rested several key players and deployed a mostly second-string side in the German top flight for a second consecutive week.

========================================================

========================================================
Highly-experienced and penalty kick-taking goalkeeper HANS-JOERG BUTT, who has netted 26 career goals in the German top flight over the course of his career, started between the sticks to begin 61 of the last 76 Bundesliga contests for BAYERN MUNICH prior to the arrival of Germany World Cup first choice MANUEL NEUER from Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen last summer but then warmed the bench with all the class and grace of an admirable Profispieler for the next 32 matches in the domestic league immediately thereafter.
========================================================

========================================================

Vfb Stuttgart might have spoiled the party early but a header from former Bayern Munich reserve team defender GEORG NIEDERMEIER was turned away by the crossbar. Hungary international TAMAS HAJNAL had a shot from long range for the Swabians, however, the Bavarian goalkeeper Butt was not about to permit that. At the other end, veteran Croatia international midfielder DANIJEL PRANJIC tried his luck for Bayern Munich but failed with Vfb Stuttgart’s former Germany U-21 international goalkeeper SVEN ULREICH.

========================================================

========================================================
Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ (right) of Bayern Munich settles the ball in front of Vfb Stuttgart’s Japan youth international defender GOTOKU SAKAI, the 21-year-old native of New York who joined the Swabians on loan from from J-League side Albirex Niigata just this past February, during the Bundesliga match at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Bavaria.
========================================================

A fatal mistake tipped the scales when Bayern Munich’s Germany international defender HOLGER BADSTUBER floated a long ball down the left flank in the 32nd minute. Mexico World Cup center back FRANCISCO JAVIER RODRIGUEZ, the 30-year-old former PSV Eindhoven defender better known as “Maza”, made a complete mess of his clearance and sent Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER away for Bavarians. The Golden Boot winner in South Africa had a look up and unselfishly squared for national team constituent and one-time Vfb Stuttgart striker MARIO GOMEZ, who easily netted his 26th goal of this Bundesliga season and gave Bayern Munich the lead it would not relinquish.

Gomez, who was bought by Bayern Munich from Vfb Stuttgart for a transfer fee of 30.0 million Euros in the summer of 2009, failed to score in his first match against his old club on the last day of October in that year but has splurged for nine goals on his last six appearances opposite the Swabians since.

Japan World Cup midfielder SHINJI OKAZAKI soon header yet another ball against the crossbar for Vfb Stuttgart before Butt had one last bit of magic guarding the net for Bayern Munich. Bosnia / Herzegovina international striker VEDAD IBISEVIC, the one-time college All-America at St. Louis University who started his professional career in Europe with French club Paris Saint Germain several years ago and had scored eight goals on his first baker’s dozen appearances for the Swabians since arriving from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for a transfer fee of 5.5 million Euros in late January, broke clear for a one-on-one situation with the Bavarian goalkeeper in the 38th minute. Nothing was about to get in the way of one last clean sheet in the Bundesliga for the old professional, though.

Butt needed to deal with a few more Vfb Stuttgart efforts in the second half, as well, before Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN dished off to Mueller in time added on; a fifth goal of this Bundesliga season from the 22-year-old set the final numbers and punctuated Bayern Munich’s 22nd victory in the German top flight this term.

========================================================

========================================================
Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN of Bayern Munich, the former Real Madrid reject who netted such an important penalty against Los Blancos in the return leg of the UEFA Champions League semifinal at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Spain earlier this week, had a couple of excellent chances to score against Vfb Stuttgart but had one shot well-saved by Swabian goalkeeper Sven Ulreich and blasted another well over the crossbar after coming on as a substitute with a little over a quarter of an hour to play at the sold-out Allianz Arena in Bavaria.
========================================================

BAYERN MUNICH : Butt – Rafinha, Tymoshchuk, Badstuber, Contento – Luiz Gustavo, Pranjic (Robben 74′) – Usami (Schweinsteiger 56′), Mueller, Olic – Gomez (Alaba 46′)

VFB STUTTGART : Ulreich – Sakai, Maza, Niedermeier, Molinaro – Gentner, Kvist (Cacau 46′) – Harnik (Traore 79′), Hajnal, Okazaki (Schieber 64′) – Ibisevic

Bayern Sweep Aside Stuttgart, Reach D.F.B. Semifinal

========================================================
France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY, who has scored eight goals in the Bundesliga and added another pair in the UEFA Champions League for Bayern Munich this season, shields the ball from Bosnia / Herzegovina international striker VEDAD IBISEVIC, the mid-term purchase of Vfb Stuttgart who cost 5.5 million Euros from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim just last month, during the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal quarterfinal match at the sold-out Mercedes Benz Arena in the southwestern German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg.
========================================================

A well-worked goal a half an hour in and a lightning-fast second strike immediately after the break enabled visiting BAYERN MUNICH to brush aside the indifferent form displayed as of late and sweep aside Swabian rival VFB STUTTGART 2-0 for a deserved place in the semifinal round of the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal.

The joy generated by the Bavarians’ victory was mitigated somewhat, however, by the news that standout Germany World Cup defensive midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER, who had only just recently returned to action after having broken his collarbone and lost nearly three months earlier this term, suffered a torn ligament in his ankle and will be, once again, sidelined indefinitely.

Germany World Cup midfielder TONI KROOS, in the role of attacking central midfielder, was quite unlucky to have a quality rocket from long range crash off the crossbar in the 20th minute but the good fortune of Vfb Stuttgart’s one-time Germany U-21 international goalkeeper SVEN ULREICH would not last for long; just ten minutes later, Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER and Brazil international defender RAFINHA combined on the right and immeditately thereafter France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY had little trouble thumping Mueller’s inviting, low cross into the back of the net and recording his 11th goal of the season in all competitions.

========================================================

========================================================
Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER (left), who has scored just four goals but has provided 10 assists and also won a significant number of penalties for Bayern Munich in all competitions this season, settles the ball in front of Vfb Stuttugart defender CRISTIAN MOLINARO, the 28-year-old, former FC Juventus Turin rearguard who has earned two caps for Italy in his career, during the D.F.B. Pokal quarterfinal match at the Mercedes Benz Arena.
========================================================

Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ, who leads the Bundesliga once again this term with 17 goals, effectively clinched the result with a second goal for Bayern Munich only 35 seconds after the restart. Super Mario, who set a new domestic record with a 30.0 million Euro transfer from Vfb Stuttgart to the record German champions in the summer of 2009, initiated the move, himself, with a ball down the right flank for the in-form Mueller. Gomez met and volleyed Mueller’s curling cross from the penalty spot and was, at first, denied by a decent save from Ulreich but had a second chance when the rebound came straight back.

A 25th goal of the season for Gomez, then, who failed to score in his first match for Bayern Munich against his old Swabian club on the final day of October in 2009 but has racked up eight goals for the Bavarians on his last five appearances opposite Vfb Stuttgart since; the Swabians, for their part, never really did do much to trouble Germany World Cup goalkeeper MANUEL NEUER, who recorded his 17th shutout in all competitions this season for Bayern Munich.

Bayern Munich must wait until Saturday to learn the identity of whom the record German Cup winner (15 titles) will face in the semifinal round of the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal. The current Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Moenchengladbach and 2.Bundesliga side SpVgg Greuther Fuerth would be the other three sides still left in the competition, which was first staged during the 1934/35 football season. Bayern Munich, to review, last won the D.F.B. Pokal after having defeated Werder Bremen 4-0 on May 15, 2010.

========================================================

========================================================
Germany World Cup midfielder BASTIAN SCHWEINSTEIGER reacts in pain during the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal quarterfinal match with Vfb Stuttgart at the sold-out Mercedes Benz Arena in Baden-Wuerttemberg; Bayern Munich chief medical officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfarth later stated after an MRC scan and examination that Schweinsteiger has been fitted with a plaster cast but did not speculate when the 27-year-old midfielder with 90 caps and 23 goals for Deutschland might return to the Bavarian Startelf.

Bundesliga
Spieltag # 16

1 – VFB STUTTGART —————— Gentner 7′
2 – BAYERN MUNICH —————– Gomez 13′, 57′

The Bundesliga leaders absorbed the psychological blow of an early goal conceded and responded with strikes of its own on either side of the halftime whistle as visiting BAYERN MUNICH overcame a stubborn, ten-man VFB STUTTGART 2-1 and extended their lead in the German top flight to three points with just one round remaining until the annual Winterpause.

Bayern Munich did not have the best of beginnings to say the least. Holland World Cup winger ARJEN ROBBEN waltzed around Vfb Stuttgart’s former Germany U-21 international goalkeeper SVEN ULREICH only to have Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ somehow miss his lovely square ball completely with the net wide open. And, just seven minutes in, Vfb Stuttgart stromed to the lead after Austria international winger MARTIN HARNIK, who leads the Swabians in both goals scored and assists provided this season, smartly headed the ball back and down for on-charging Germany international midfielder CHRISTIAN GENTNER to hammer home.

The Bavarians did not remain behind on the scoreboard for long, however, after Ukraine international midfielder ANATOLI TYMOSHCHUK found overlapping Brazil international fullback RAFINHA on the right wing. The summer signing from Italian Serie A side CFC Genoa flighted an inviting cross which Gomez was glad to volley out of the air and past Ulreich to even the match in the 13th minute.

========================================================================

========================================================================

Bayern Munich’s chances improved greatly when Italy international defender CRISTIAN MOLINARO was shown a second yellow card to reduce Vfb Stuttgart to ten men only a half hour into the game. The Swabians did not give up the ship straight away, though, and were prepared to fight for a share of the points albeit shorthanded. Ulreich produced a fine, one-handed stop of Germany World Cup winger THOMAS MUELLER and, five minutes into the second half, pulled off a flying save to deny Germany international midfielder TONI KROOS and keep the Bavarians at bay, if only temporarily.

Kroos soon threaded a precise ball to Germany World Cup fullback PHILIPP LAHM in the box on the left in the 57th minute. The Bayern Munich captain then drew Ulreich over before brilliantly pulling the ball back for Gomez in the center at the penalty spot. The 26-year-old striker was able to sweep the ball home to give the Bavarians their first lead of the match; the brace against his old club in Stuttgart restored Gomez to the top of the Bundesliga chart with 15 goals in the top flight this term.

Bayern Munich would outshoot Vfb Stuttgart by the three-to-one ratio of 18-6 for the contest but failed to extend their advantage at the Mercedes Benz Arena. Robben, in particular, showed his rust from the long layoff and twice, uncharacteristically, missed the target from good scoring range in the second half. In between those lost opportunities, Germany national striker CACAU had a glorious chance after an eggregious error from Bayern Munich’s Belgium international defender DANIEL VAN BUYTEN but the Vfb Stuttgart second half substitute blasted just over the crossbar from prime real estate close in.

Three goals from ROLAND WOHLFARTH and two more from MICHAEL RUMMENIGGE enabled two-time defending Bundesliga champion BAYERN MUNICH to complete the double with a convincing 5-2 victory over VFB STUTTGART in the 1986 DFB Pokal Finale at the Olympiastadion in West Berlin.

The hat trick from Wohlfarth, who signed with the Bavarians from MSV Duisburg in the summer of 1984, meant the 23-year-old striker finished the 1985-86 campaign as Bayern Munich’s leading scorer with 21 goals in all competitions.

Rummenigge, the younger brother of West Germany’s famed World Cup striker Karl-Heinz then with Inter Milan in Italy, recorded the most eye-pleasing goal of the match with his volley of a HANS PFLUGLER cross following a move on the left flank initiated by Denmark World Cup midfielder SOREN LERBY.

UEFA Europa League
Round of 32

0 – Vfb Stuttgart (GER)
2 – Benfica Lisbon (POR) ————— Salvio 31′, Cardozo 78′

A goal on either side of the halftime whistle effectively wound up the tie as visiting Portuguese club BENFICA LISBON defeated struggling German Bundesliga outfit VFB STUTTGART 2-0 in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League knockout Round of 32 and easily claimed advancement 4-1 on aggregate.

Argentina international winger EDUARDO SALVIO, out on loan for the season from Spanish La Liga side Atletico Madrid, lined up a bouncing ball outside the area and rifled a shot low, far post past diving Vfb Stuttgart netminder MARC ZIEGLER to give Benfica the critical first goal of the match just after the half hour mark.

Paraguay World Cup striker OSCAR CARDOZO, who led both Benfica and the Portuguese top flight last season with 26 goals, added insurance for the visitors in the second stanza with an impressive free kick that banked in off the post to beat substitute goalkeeper SVEN ULREICH.

UEFA Europa League
Round of 32
2/17/2011

2 – Benfica Lisbon (POR) ———— Cardozo 70, Jara 81′
1 – Vfb Stuttgart (GER) ————– Harnik 21′

Two goals inside the final twenty minutes allowed the increased second half pressure to pay off at last as host BENFICA LISBON engineered a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over unlucky visiting German side VFB STUTTGART in the first leg of the UEFA Europa League Round of 32 knockout tie.

Second-from-bottom status in the Bundesliga did not prevent die Schwaben from scoring the opening goal of the game. Hungary international midfielder TAMAS HAJNAL, recently sent out on loan to Vfb Stuttgart by table-topping Borussia Dortmund, played a perfect ball over the top of the Benfica defense in the 23rd minute. Austria international striker MARTIN HARNIK timed his run perfectly then left former Spain U-21 international goalkeeper ROBERTO, for whom Benfica paid La Liga side Real Zaragoza 8.5 million Euros this past summer, looking a bit silly with a most sublime lob.

Harnik has started just six of his 21 Bundesliga games for Vfb Stuttgart but is still second with six goals in the German top flight this season. The 23-year-old Austrian arrived via Werder Bremen for a transfer fee of 300,000 Euros in the summer after scoring 13 goals in 30 games while out on loan in the 2.Bundesliga with Fortuna Dusseldorf a year ago. Harnik’s handsome finish versus Benfica increased his team-leading total in Europe to five goals this term.

Benfica came out for the second half with a renewed sense of energy and commitment after conceding a goal against the run of play in the opening session. The 32-time champion of Portugal immediately forced Vfb Stuttgart goalkeeper SVEN ULREICH into a string of saves. Indeed, the Eagles would amass a 22-5 advantage in attempts-at-goal for the game.

In the 70th minute, Paraguay World Cup striker OSCAR CARDOZA pounced on a loose ball in the box and turned to rifle a left-footed laser into the lower right-hand corner of the net to bring Benfica level.

Roughly eleven minutes later, Benfica’s Argentina international striker FRANCO JARA intercepted a careless pass and launched a dipping drive from well beyond the area. A back-pedaling Ulreich could only push the ball off the underside of the crossbar, although Cardoza arrived in a hurry to make things official. Replays clearly showed the ball had bounced down across the line, and so the goal was rightfully given to Jara.

With less than four minutes remaining to play, Vfb Stuttgart almost tied the game up again but 29-year-old veteran Brazilian midfielder ELSON had his free kick turned away by the post.

DFB Pokal
third round
December 22, 2010

3 – Vfb Stuttgart —————— Pogrebnyak 32′, 45+1′, Delpierre 77′
6 – Bayern Munich ————— Ottl 6′, Gomez 8′, Klose 52′, 86′, Mueller 81′, Ribery 90+4′

Three goals in the final ten minutes vaulted current holders BAYERN MUNICH to a thrilling 6-3 victory over host VFB STUTTGART in the Deutscher Fussball Bund Pokal round of sixteen.

Ten-man Vfb Stuttgart, who had seen Holland World Cup reserve defender KHALID BOULAHROUZ shown a second yellow card in the 67th minute, had leveled the match in the 77th minute after French defender MATTHIEU DELPIERRE scored with a header from a corner kick — this after Bayern Munich’s Germany World Cup reserve goalkeeper HANS-JOERG BUTT had saved the penalty kick of the Swabians’ Germany international midfielder CHRISTIAN GENTNER.

But Germany World Cup sensation THOMAS MUELLER, who scored for Bayern Munich against Vfb Stuttgart in the Bundesliga this past Sunday at the Mercedes Benz Arena, snapped a 3-3 tie with the go-ahead goal in the 81st minute after a fine pass in the box from France World Cup winger FRANCK RIBERY; with the match-winner, the 21-year-old winger finished the first half of the season second on the Bavarian team with seven goals in all competitions.

In the 86th minute, Germany World Cup Torjaeger MIROSLAV KLOSE, who had come on as a first half substitute, doubled Bayern Munich’s lead with his second goal of the game and fourth of the season in all competitions.

After the Vfb Stuttgart skipper Delpierre was dismissed in the 87th minute, Ribery tacked on a sixth goal for Bavarians in the fourth minute of time added on; the French winger extended his consecutive scoring streak to four matches in all competitions for Bayern Munich.

A tough result for Vfb Stuttgart, second from bottom in the Bundesliga, who had fought back bravely twice on the evening; Russia international PAVEL POGREBNYAK rallied the home side with a pair of goals before halftime, the equalizer coming in injury time, after the Swabians had dug an early 0-2 hole before even ten minutes had elapsed.

Bayern Munich’s ANDREAS OTTL opened the scoring with a rising rocket just six minutes into the match; the 25-year-old midfielder, who spent the second half of the last campaign out on loan at 1.FC Nuremberg, recorded his first goal this season and, indeed, his first goal for the Bavarian club since the 2007-08 schedule with the German Cup strike in Stuttgart.

Germany international striker MARIO GOMEZ, who registered a hat trick this past Sunday against his former club, grabbed his 20th goal of the season in all competitions eight minutes into the game; Bayern Munich’s leading goal-scorer was later taken off in favor of Klose on the half hour mark.
