“Freitagnacht” Fussball Hat Mir Erfreut

================================================================
================================================================

Gerald Asamoah : Hamburg Stadtderby Hero

========================================================
Two-time Germany World Cup striker and Stadtderby Superhero GERALD ASAMOAH of FC St. Pauli swiftly moves to avoid the sliding tackle of SV Hamburg’s 36-year-old, two-time Brazil World Cup midfield workhorse ZE ROBERTO during the always intense, intra-city clash at the Imtech Arena. (Axel Heimken/DAPD)
========================================================

A second half goal from an aging World Cup striker, a clean sheet from the third-string goalkeeper on his Bundesliga debut and steadfast defending from the rest of the side for ninety minutes powered in-form FC ST. PAULI to a massive 1-0 victory over traditional arch-rival SV HAMBURG in the 131st installment of the Hamburg Stadtderby.

The triumph marked just the second time FC St. Pauli had ever managed to topple their ultimate class enemy in the Bundesliga. Die Rothosen had not lost in the German top flight to their cross-town adversary for more than three decades, since September of 1977, to be exact. As it stands, the Kult Klub have collected just 24 wins since the series first began.

32-year-old veteran striker GERALD ASAMOAH, who has won 43 caps and appeared at two FIFA World Cup final tournaments for Germany in his career, continued his goal-scoring run and inscribed his name into the history books for FC St. Pauli.

Hamburg SV completely controlled the first half and would ultimately compile an overwhelming 24-5 edge in shots-at-goal for the game.

In the opening session, Germany international defender HEIKO WESTERMANN got around the end of the FC St. Pauli defense on a set piece but was denied a goal for die Rothosen by a fine play by Bundesliga debutant BENEDIKT PLIQUETT; later, veteran Holland international striker RUUD VAN NISTELROOY rose well to connect with the cross of Germany international defender DENNIS AOGO but sent his header straight at the FC St. Pauli third-string goalkeeper.

Creative veteran Brazil international midfielder ZE ROBERTO had a glorious opportunity for Hamburg SV just after the halftime break but smashed his left-footed shot into the side-netting.

(Morris MacMatzen/Reuters)
=================================================

Holland World Cup defender JORIS MATHIJSEN also had a legitimate chance soon into the second half for die Rothosen but the 26-year-old Pliquett, whose last game for FC St. Pauli was the DFB Pokal match with Regionalliga Nord side FC Chemnitzer to start the season this past August, stuck out his foot to suppress the threat.

Just before the hour, Asamoah announced his presence as the difference-maker for the all-important Hamburg Stadtderby.

A corner kick from one-time Germany U-21 international midfielder MAX KRUSE was redirected on at the near post and allowed the aging Germany international attacker, who arrived at FC St. Pauli this past summer on a free transfer from Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen, to pounce with a header from close range for a sixth goal in the Bundesliga this season.

========================================================

========================================================

The resurgent Asamoah, who scored just three goals in 35 matches his last two seasons at Schalke 04 combined, counts four goals in five Bundesliga games for FC St. Pauli since the conclusion of the Winterpause.

The strike by Asamoah inspired confidence and the visitors might have added a second but Hamburg SV goalkeeper FRANK ROST somehow managed to keep out the header of FC St. Pauli substitute striker MARIUS EBBERS.

Holland World Cup winger ELJERO ELIA did create one final threat for Hamburg SV but failed to get his effort on target and, so, the 33-year unbeaten streak of die Rothosen against the intra-city, arch-rival has been snapped.

Hamburg Stadtderby – Debutant Pliquett Delivers In Prime Time

======================================================
FC St. Pauli’s surprise starting goalkeeper BENEDIKT PLIQUETT, who had never before competed in a Bundesliga match prior to the meeting with the great cross-town foe, kicks the corner flag following the conclusion of the 131st Hamburg Stadtderby at the Imtech Arena in north Germany. (DAPD/mopo.de)
======================================================

Regardless of what level his club has been at, 26-year-old BENEDIKT PLIQUETT has still been a reserve all of his professional footballing life.

However, the third-string goalkeeper for FC ST. PAULI had been promised by trainer HOLGER STANISLAWSKI “four or five weeks” in advance, according to Pliquett, himself, that the one-time SV Hamburg shot-stopper would be in between the sticks for the all-important 131st Hamburg Stadtderby at the Imtech Arena.

Pliquett, of course, began his professional career with SV Hamburg but never even got a game for the reserve side in the Regionalliga Nord before leaving the club in January of 2004 for a spell with Vfb Luebeck.

========================================================

The German goalkeeper returned to the city of Hamburg and signed with FC St. Pauli to start the 2004-05 campaign. But, the playing situation never really has improved all that much for the Rothosen youth product, who is in his sixth campaign with the Kult Klub now. Entering this term, Pliquett had made just three appearances in the 2.Bundesliga over the past two seasons for FC St. Pauli.

Prior to the Hamburg Stadtderby this term, Pliquett had managed just one start — FC St. Pauli’s 1-0 loss at Regionalliga Nord (fourth division) FC Chemnitzer in the DFB Pokal to open the new season.

Pliquett certainly made the most of his opportunity against SV Hamburg on his very first game in the German top flight, though, and was credited with six saves while collecting a most important clean sheet for FC St. Pauli.

Flashback 1977 FC St. Pauli : Erste Bundesliga Stadtderby Sieg

========================================================

As the scoreboard at the Volksparkstadion in the north Germany clearly indicates, FC ST. PAULI’s first-ever Bundesliga victory over intra-city adversary SV HAMBURG occured on September 3, 1977.

FRANZ GERBER and WOLFGANG KULKA scored the goals for traditional underdog FC St. Pauli that day.

England international star KEVIN KEEGAN had just joined SV Hamburg from reigning UEFA European Cup champion FC Liverpool to start the 1977-78 season. The 26-year-old striker, who finished second in the voting for France Football’s prestigous Balon d’Or award in 1977, was given a contract by the Rothosen which made him the highest-paid player in the country at the time. Keegan scored 12 goals in the Bundesliga his first season but Hamburg SV finished a disappointing 10th in the final table.

Another player in the Startelf for SV Hamburg that noteworthy day was ARNO STEFFENHAGEN, the native of a divided Berlin with one cap in his career for West Germany. The well-traveled midfielder, who had a season with FC Hellenic in South Africa and three with successful Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam before joining the Rothosen, signed with FC St. Pauli — demoted back to the 2.Bundesliga — for the 1978-79 season. Steffenhagen later finished his career in the old North American Soccer League and won a championship in 1981 with the Chicago Sting.

Bundesliga Stadtderby Is Distinct

========================================================
Prior to the start of the 130th Hamburg Stadtderby this past September at the modest Millerntor Stadion, supporters of SV Hamburg set off blue smoke bombs to let the fans of FC St. Pauli know just exactly who is boss of football in the north German city. (Axel Heimken/DAPD)
========================================================

In contrast with the world’s other top-shelf professional leagues — England, Italy or Spain — the Bundesliga in Germany has always been short with the intense intra-city derby game.

The German first division has long hosted great regional rivalries, such as the recent Revierderby contested between Borussia Dortmund and Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen or, perhaps, the Bavarianderby featuring Bayern Munich and 1.FC Nuremberg.

But all-metropolitan matches are quite another story, traditionally speaking, at least in terms of the German top flight.

========================================================

========================================================
(Christian Charisius/Reuters)
========================================================

Teams such as FC St. Paul of Hamburg or TSV 1860 Munich may find themselves promoted to the Bundesliga from time to time, but usually make a quick return to the second division.

Berlin is, of course, Germany’s largest city and have had clubs such as Hertha SC Berlin, Tennis Borussia Berlin and the departed SpVgg Blau-Weiss Berlin in the Bundesliga before. The realities of the Cold War and two separate entities known as East Berlin and West Berlin for decades had its effect, however. A most fierce intra-city rivalry existed on the eastern side of the Iron Curtain during the days of the old Deutsche Demokratische Republik between the FC Dynamo Berlin, sponsored by the Stasi (state secret police), and 1.FC Union Berlin.

=============================================

The Hamburg Stadtderby is always of particular interest, in part due to the David and Goliath nature of the affair. Indeed, SV Hamburg have won 89 matches and lost just 23 games to FC St. Pauli since the rivlary first got underway back in 1919. Die Rothosen are currently in the midst of a 33-year unbeaten run against the notorious Kult Klub.

SV Hamburg, who were originally founded in 1887, are one of Germany’s oldest and most successful clubs. Die Rothosen have won the national championship six times and also claimed the prestigous UEFA European Cup in 1983. HSV players such as UWE SEELER and MANFRED KALTZ are legendary.

Even Der Kaiser, FRANZ BECKENBAUER, spent some time with Hamburg SV upon leaving the New York Cosmos of the old NASL and won the Bundesliga title in 1982.

========================================================

========================================================

Meanwhile, FC St. Pauli trainer HOLGER STANISLAWSKI has proclaimed his support for three current club players — FLORIAN BRUNS, RALPH GUNESCH and CARSTEN ROTHENBACH — who were questioned by police recently in connection with an on-going match-fixing and illegal betting scandal.

Former FC St. Pauli striker RENE SCHNITZLER has already admitted to accepting money for the purposes of influencing matches.

FC Che Guevara – Battling For Bundesliga Life

========================================================
(Reuters)
========================================================

========================================================
(Morris MacMatzen/Reuters)
========================================================

FC Che Guevara, er, ah, FC ST. PAULI, enter the 131st Hamburg Stadtderby with their traditional cross-town rival and class war enemy at the Volksparkstadion on Wednesday flying high following two critical wins in the German top flight opposite 1.FC Koeln and, most recently, Borussia Moenchengladbach.

FC St. Paul, in fact, are unbeaten with the two victories as well as two ties since league play resumed following the annual Winterpause.

The world-renowned Kult Klub has managed to move itself away from the dreaded relegation zone and into twelfth place in the table. However, despite the maximum points against two clubs at the bottom end of the Bundesliga spectrum back-to-back, trainer HOLGER STANISLAWSKI’s FC St. Pauli side cannot afford to rest on its laurels. Particularly not with clubs such as intra-city adversary SV Hamburg, hunting a place in Europe next season, remaining on the schedule.

(Morris MacMatzen/Reuters)
========================================================

Aging Germany international GERALD ASAMOAH has engaged in a renaissance for FC St. Pauli since the Bundesliga started up again. The 32-year-old striker, who appeared at both the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cup final tournaments and arrived on a free transfer from Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen to start this season, has scored three goals in FC St. Pauli’s four games following the winter break. Asamoah, who managed just three goals in 35 games his final two campaigns with Schalke, has moved into the lead for the Kult Klub with five goals in the Bundesliga this term.

From the perspective of FC St. Pauli, the Stadtderby against Hamburg SV would be a wonderful occasion for the veteran Asamoah to have another goal…or two.

Hamburg Stadtderby – Desperation For FC Che Guevara

========================================================
Supporters of HAMBURG SV hold up a banner which reads “2001 – Promotion. 2002- Relegation. Oh how that is beautiful!” prior to the start of a Bundesliga match with bitter intra-city adversary FC ST. PAUL several years ago; indeed, FC St. Pauli were promoted to the top flight of German football for the 2001-02 campaign but returned quickly to the 2.Bundesliga. (Marcus Brandt/DDP)
========================================================

The Polizei are certain to be all present and accounted for when host SV HAMBURG collide with fierce, cross-town arch-rival FC ST. PAULI (a.k.a. FC Che Guevara) in the Bundesliga at the Volksparkstadion for the 131st Hamburg Stadtderby on Sunday.

FC Che Guevara are, as is usually the case, desperate to avoid immediate demotion to the 2.Bundesliga; the disco dancer masquerading as a football trainer HOLGER STANISLAWSKI’s club are one of a trio of clubs just three points away from the dreaded relegation zone.

Hamburg SV have always owned infamous FC St. Pauli, who have won just 23 of the 130 prior intra-city contests between the two sides to date. As of late, die Rothosen have not been beaten by FC Che Guevara in 14 consecutive matches. The last victory by the traditional underdog in this tie came when FC St. Pauli shutout Hamburg SV 2-0 in September of 1977 at the Volksparkstadion.

========================================================

Only 1.FC Koeln have scored fewer goals in the Bundesliga than FC Che Guevara, who have managed to find the back of the net exactly 23 times in 20 matches so far this season. On the road, FC St. Pauli have produced a league-low eight goals. Not the best recipe, then, for survival in the German top flight.

SV Hamburg, meanwhile, have a legitmate shot at a place in Europe for next season but must find a way to score more consistently, themselves; all three points against the intra-city adversary is imperative.

Cuban dictator FIDEL CASTRO will be watching on satellite— and cheering for FC Che Guevara.
